    This was very helpful. Thank you. We are using essentials in writing right now. I shelved it and am doing something else for grammar as we weren’t huge fans (I heard this from others as well), but going to pull it back out for the second half of the year to try the writing. If not, I think we just need to make the IEW plunge.

    I have a High School-er and we use 'Fix-it- Grammar'. I can not recommend it enough!! If it's helpful for reference; She is ADHD and learns best by DOING, not memorizing. If that's your child as well, you may really love this curriculum as much as we do. 😁 The lessons can be as short as you want them (1 sentence correction/day - that is how I sold her on the curriculum) or you can do more. I often find her working ahead because the program makes so much more sense to her than traditional methods. The reference cards are a great tool along side our daily work. Love it, love it!

    • @JanelleKnutson
      @JanelleKnutson  Před 3 lety

      Great question. I have used a lot of different grammar curriculums over my 17 years of homeschooling. I choose what I think will help a particular child the best in any given school year. Fix it Grammar jumps significantly in difficulty from Nose Tree to the next level (can't remember the name of the next level) so if I am using Fix It Grammar: Nose Tree with a younger student I might take 2 years to do it or finish it in one year and then do another grammar curriculum the following year (such as Winston Grammar or BJU Press English) and then move back to Fix It Grammar if my chid did well with it. Hope that makes sense.

    Thank you for sharing the info. That helps me a lot to pick the curriculum. I'm going to buy IEW level A. I found there is Teaching Writing(Structure and Style® [Forever Streaming, Seminar Workbook, Premium Membership]) in the premier package, but there isn't in basic plus package. I'm wondering what's Teaching Writing for? Do I need to buy it? Thanks.

    • @JanelleKnutson
      @JanelleKnutson  Před 3 lety +4

      That’s the teachers training seminar to help you understand the method better and to be able to teach the method without using the video instruction. It is not needed if you are using the structure and style for students videos although it is still helpful to have if you have the extra money for it.

    I'm looking into this and have been a little confused about the literature component from what I can see onlins. In level c do you have reading/literature books that need to be purchased or read or is that optional? I am a veteran homeschooler but about to have a 9th grader and honestly highschool is terrifying! Thanks for any help you can offer

    • @JanelleKnutson

      IEW Structure and Style for Students is a writing curriculum although the Teacher's Manual does have literature suggestions. You would need to incorporate the Teaching the Classics curriculum from IEW to get a full literature course. Here is more information about Teaching the Classics: bit.ly/31T2wyj

    Can you tell me how many days or how much time this would generally take to use as a supplement with our other language arts curriculum? I am wondering if it would be too much. • @JanelleKnutson
      @JanelleKnutson  Před 3 lety

      Parent videos are not necessary. It might help for you to listen in on some of the earlier lessons that your kids do so that you understand the method and are able to assist them if they get stuck.
      I had to help my younger ones with the first few lessons, as they got use to the format and method, but now they can do it all on their own. I just edit the papers.

    I am planning to use IEW for my 7 and 5th grader next year. He need help to learn how to write, he struggles with writing paper he hate it! I think he will like the video option NOW I was playing on keep using abeka for grammar and skip the writing portion with abeka, because I believe language with abeka has the grammar and writing together CORRECTLY ME IF I AM WRONG. Or do you have any suggestions on other grammar curriculum that can go with IEW writing? Thank you.

    • @JanelleKnutson
      @JanelleKnutson  Před 3 lety

      Abeka is an excellent Language Arts program so you would be fine sticking with it and eliminating the writing section in Abeka and substituting with IEW. Or, you can use Fix It Grammar from IEW that works very well alongside their writing program.

    I’m new to homeschooling. My son is starting Year 9 and I’ve ordered
    BJU English Curriculum.
    How does BJU compare to EIW and IEW? My son is a reluctant writer (and reader), doesn’t enjoy either.
    I look forward to your reply.
    Many thanks.

    • @JanelleKnutson
      @JanelleKnutson  Před 3 lety +6

      BJU English is excellent for literature. It is heavy on grammar (almost too much grammar so I cut a lot out). The writing portion is really just writing prompts but does not teach a student how to write. They assume by high school the student can write well (which is not the case for many kids.) EIW and IEW both TEACH HOW to write. EIW and IEW do not include grammar or literature (although you can purchase them separately). I hope that helps.

    • @JanelleKnutson

      Writing Strands did not end up working for the student I purchased it for. We switched over to Essentials in Writing mid- year for that student and now she is doing IEW's Structure and Style for Students. My top two favorites for writing are IEW and EIW. Writing Strands is a great option as well but just didn't work for us. Hope that helps.

I am very torn between IEW SSS and EIW for my older three. This will be my first time teaching kindergarten and I need something that will allow me to spend more time with him. Would you say that doing one level for the older 3 of IEW would be easier than two or three different levels of EIW?

    • @JanelleKnutson

      I think it would be easier to use one level of IEW SSS for 3 kids. That being said, EIW does offer a grading service which can be helpful for a homeschool mom juggling multiple kids (although they have limited spots available for the grading service).

I have also used AAR as an extra help alongside SWR and LOE for struggling readers. So, still using it but also using other curriculum as well. Hope that makes sense. :)
