WriteShop vs Structure and Style (IEW) - (2020 Curriculum Review)

- Finding a good writing curriculum for your middle school kid can be tricky.
Today, I’m going to compare two curriculums that I find very compelling -- WriteShop I & II and IEW’s new Structure and Style (available May 2020).
(CHECK OUT my companion blog post that compares these two curriculums side by side.)

A good middle school writing curriculum needs to cover basics like constructing a paragraph and then teach how to write an essay, as well as other non-fiction styles.
Hopefully it will push a student to expand their vocabulary, vary their sentence structure, and learn to express their own thoughts.
And of course, you still want your kid to work on punctuation, grammar and other writing mechanics.
Finally, a writing curriculum will also push them creatively and help them LOVE writing.
So where do you find something that does all of this??
I’ve been looking at writing curriculum since my 4 kids were little. And since 2013, I’ve taught writing and English at our local co-op to the kids who are 12 to 17. So I’ve seen and used A LOT of different curriculum -- some okay and some great.

Wow! I am impressed with your obvious knowledge of the subject area. You were detailed in your breakdown of the pros and cons of each curriculum. Great job! This is so helpful! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for this. Searching hard for a middle school writing program.
Thank you for your thorough review.
This video is so thorough and superb.
Excellent video! We will be giving Write Shop Jr. level E a try this year. With your background, I was wondering if you have any experience with any other writing curriculums, particularly Writing and Rhetoric and/or Lost Tools of Writing? I'm intrigued by both of these.
This was super helpful! Thank you!
Write-shop actually has curriculum for kindergarten all the way up! Great video I have been debating between the two. Thanks!
IEW also has curriculum from kindergarten up.
My child did three years of IEW. Granted, we were already journaling in primary journals PRIOR to those three years....but now he just automatically adds dress ups in his writing, and it is "SO GOOD." (I know, "banned word," right?!). Anyway, I love how it's structured and systematic. I love the rubrics and how they gradually get more difficult. If anyone is interested in seeing what I'm talking about, they can message me . :)
Do you have any experience with writing & rhetoric fable? If so, what are your thoughts on it for a 9 year old boy who fights anything that has to do with writing?
My 10 year old did excellent with IEW and actually finished a year course over the summer, but toward the end of the year where she is writing on her own instead of using the source text, I noticed a big of difficulty. I like training the brainstorming aspect in WriteShop and I feel like this would definitely help. Thank you for the review.
I was wondering if SS year 1A could be done over the summer. Thanks for your comment.
@@xiixiixo She is a natural writer and my daughter enjoyed it. she definitely spent a lot of her summer break hours on it but it was doable at the time.
Hi, have you reviewed EIW?
Mom of many here. Just wondering how independently children can work in these writing curriculums. How much teacher time needed. Thanks
Seems like it has a lot covered. But I almost wish material was sectioned out by lesson instead of flipping through the book so much just for one lesson. Has anyone torn the book apart and reorganized it themselves?
Great video! Thank you.
You are welcome!
Thank you!
Thank you for this comparison! I was looking to do IEW's Theme Based Writing Lessons Level A for my 5th graders but everywhere I look it says you need to complete IEW's TWSS Program first. Do we in your opinion? If so I'm going to go with another curriculum because I don't want to spend that much, and watching DVDs never works out well in our homeschool. :)
I think if you have some confidence in teaching writing, you would not need to complete TWSS to get the majority of the value from the IEW curriculum. Sure there will be a thing or two that you might miss, but the bulk of it will make sense and still work.
ToriAnn Perkey thank you! I did some research on Junior Write Shop Level D and now I can’t decide!!
Hi do we need the writeshop teacher manual or can my child use just the student work book
You will need the teacher manual. It would be difficult to teach with just the student book. Not impossible, but quite difficult.
Also, the student manual is meant to be consumable, so you'll need one for each child who uses it. But the teacher manual is a one-time purchase.
Between these two options you've reviewed, which would be a more independent study? We've been using Essentials in Writing, but I wanted to consider other curricula. I need something that my 6th grader can do primarily on his own because I have other children to teach. Thank you!
This is not from experience, but I hate that your question wasn’t answered. I read in another blog that WriteShop is a better choice for independent study. I’ll post the link for you. www.weirdunsocializedhomeschoolers.com/writeshop-or-iew/
I believe this is the blog where it’s discussed.
I know, super late to the game in an answer but maybe it will help someone along the way. We use IEW Structure and Style and it’s AMAZING for independent. Each lesson is 4-5 days worth of work. We do 3 days each week. And the first 2 days of each lesson there are amazing video lessons. My daughter LOVES them!
I'd love to hear your thoughts on Essentials in Writing and Brave Writer also!
Noted!
I second this I've been circling the edges of Brave Writer and IEW for a while, unsure of which one's going to best suit my homeschool style.
I was under the impressions that writeshop 1 was for 6-8 and 2 was for high school level. Very detailed video thank you for the comparison.
So glad you found it helpful!
Thank you so much for this video. My child has dyslexia and dysgraphia. This is my third year homeschooling. She is almost 13 (grade 7) I withdrew her from the PS because they were failing to educate her.
I’ve used writeshop E and we are now using writeshop F.
We like it but I wouldn’t call it the unicorn curricula. I’ve never used anything else to compare it to.
I’m binge watching CZcams trying to see what’s out there and what might be a good fit for her. What have you used for those struggling children?
She can learn but it’s important how the material is presented to her if that makes sense.
She hasn’t struggled with writeshop but like I said I’ve never tried anything else.
Any suggestion would help
Hi! My son is also dyslexic and dysgraphic. Did you decide on a different curriculum? I’ve been looking at writeshop for my son but it looks like a lot of writing for him. We’re using IEW SSS 1A now. It’s going ok.
@@Ibyte8256hello, we actually went with IEW structure and style.
Thank you for this comparison video and your blog! I've recently downloaded the new IEW free 3-week sample to try with my current 6th and 4th grade girls starting next week. My oldest hates writing; therefore, both of these programs look intimidating. Do you know anything about Brave Writer? And if so, could you provide any guidance? This is our 3rd year homeschooling and still have not found our writing and grammar home. Thanks in advance.
Did you find the free three week sample on their website? I couldn't find something like that.
I think it's tricky when kids don't take to writing. Honestly, sometimes it's an age thing. I wouldn't push too much until they are a little older if they are really fighting you.
I haven't spent a ton of time looking at BraveWriter, but I have heard good things about it.
I would look for something that focuses on creative expression and less on "rules" until they are older if you find things aren't clicking.
I believe each level has a few sample pages you can try. You could try contacting the company if you have something specific you want to evaluate.
@DustyErin3 when you go to the IEW site, there is a banner that scrolls across the top that offers 3 weeks of free lessons. I was just there today because I needed the video links. We started today and sample for the next 3 weeks. So far, they at least like the teacher, lol!
@@DustyErin3 if you go to the IEW and want the 3 weeks free sample, make sure you watch the little video they offer. Otherwise the process makes no sense.
What is the clapping for at 10:53? Was that for editing or something? Other than that, great video!
Probably. I'm sure I meant to edit it out! You get a prize for catching it. :)
Right?! That was odd, thought I was being hypnotized like in the movie Get Out😁 Funny! Great video ToriAnn!
Angelica Coria my exact thoughts too😅
Haha! Thanks for the response. We did end up going with iew this year for two of our girls. It has been great so far!!
So glad I wasn't the only one who noticed! I had to rewatch it to try to figure out what was going on. My brain just could not compute why that was happening!
Are you willing to review other writing programs? We have a new one coming out and would like to have folks review it.
It depends. You can email me privately at toriann@homeschooltohomeschool.com to discuss your options.
Thanks!
I think your website is broken... but thanks for the video!
ToriAnn, thank you for this video, and your others as well! I have really enjoyed watching them and getting great ideas 💡 as well comfort knowing I am not doing it all completely wrong 😄
I am a new homeschool mom. I have three boys 12, 11, 7. They do not enjoy writing at all!!! I myself to do know how to write well, and am really struggling to know what program and or where to start. I thought IEW would be great for me to be able to have the TWSS, so that I could learn and then have a better understanding of what I am teaching them/helping them with. I would love any advice and or suggestions!
Also my 7 year old is not reading (one of the reasons for us starting homeschooling) any thoughts or suggestions on this?
Limit device/TV time during the week. Go to library once a week. Explore the shelves. Designate a "Family Reading Hour" after school DAILY. Read to the child every night, even if the stories are short. Use All About Reading or Christian Light Educations reading program. Hope that helps!
For your older boys, I would start with something fun and easy just to get them into the routine of writing, while boosting their confidence and enjoyment around writing. Skip "girly" stories and give them lots of praise. Then next year move to a more structured, formal program and go at a slower pace so it does not overwhelm them.
🤷 I really do like this and wish it was organized by lesson. I think trying to simplify it for myself just to have only one lesson and all its corresponding material and that alone would be a key component for it working for me.
