    in Italy grabbing balls is an ancient ritual magic/religious gesture whose purpose is to avoid death and bad luck. However who does it is generally considered a zotic

      One could also said that it is also closely correlated with the "corna" (the 'rock out' gesture so to speak). They both arch back to the apotropaic nature of the phallus in ancient roman and greek culture. And Yes, I Think this is the most elegant and delicate way to explain why we touch our balls. 🤘🤘

    In Italy "grabbing your balls" for men is a superstitious gesture against bad luck. Like touching wood in the UK. But you're not supposed to actually grab them, just to pretend you're doing it lol (and it's also pretty vulgar, so not everybody does that)

      JIMN I don’t know which part of Italy you’re from but the balls (balle) touching is not so common at least in the Milano area I’ve never seen anyone doing i, maybe you’re the weird one but don’t involve the rest of the Italians spreading another of those stupid cliches.
      You also did not note that the description of the horns (cornuto) sign with the fingers in Italy is totally different of what was said here because it means “ you have horns on your head because your wife is cheating on you”

    • @JIMN_GG
      @JIMN_GG Před 5 lety +14

      i imagine you're not even italian, because the balls one is "typical" Italian....perhaps not the most common gesture at all, but it is used sometimes when someone wishes you "sfiga" in italy
      The horns one can have multiple meanings, one of them is what you said, but it can also be used (again) when someone wishes you bad luck, and you show the horns saying "tiè"
      If you were italian, you'd know this and you'd also know how different we are...North, Central and South Italy are all diverse and sometimes dont even use the same gestures
      Found this explaining the ball scratching:
      "The gesture involves using the left hand to mimic scratching a left testicle.
      Italian men do this anytime, anywhere -- but it doesn't necessarily mean they're feeling itchy.
      In Italy, scratching down there is believed to keep evil spirits away and is done whenever a vaguely sinister event transpires."

      @Nivola1953 Před 5 lety +3

      JIMN i am sure you are not italian, i was born an lived in Italy from birth in a small town near Milano called Brugherio, and the fact that you assume to know what is “typical Italian” just underline the fact that you have no idea that Italy like any other country is a diverse culture and what you may consider typical is considered gross by many, as i said I cannot recall anyone i know ever doing that, i am not excluding someone will be doing it, just don’t expect to go to Italy and see Italian touching their ball at any corner, they have better thing to do.

    The gesture her husband's sister does is mostly done to toddlers learning to speak, people who don't speak italian or people who are across the room and/or can't hear you well, just to help convey the message idk
    just to clarify you won't see adult italians do this to other people normally
