  • Upgrading my main machine from 2.5GbE to 10GbE with a 10Gtek X520-10G-1S-X8 to take advantage of the 10GbE aggregate switch I have connected to my TrueNAS server.
    This NIC uses the Intel 82599EN controller, which doesn't have support for Windows 11. I had to download version 25.0 of the driver to get it to work in Windows 11: www.intel.com/....
    10Gtek NIC: amzn.to/3oiiyQJ
    10Gtek DAC cable: amzn.to/3mBzlOu

    Oh boy, all the stuff with Windows 11 and drivers/hardware issues are just... so reminiscent of Vista.

      But tbh W11 swallows older drivers just fine (well, almost fine). I even got some mid-2000 era drivers for LSI SCSI adapter working in W11, although it was a bit tricky.

    You saved my bacon on a different 10Gtek 10gig adapter. Intel X540-10G-2T-X8. Just downloaded the version linked, installed, and instantly worked. Broke my onboard NIC on ASUS B650E-E but I don't care because my dual 10G nic works.
    Thanks man. Highly appreciate it

      Ugh Realtek onboard did it again. I also looking at Intel X550-T2 because I aim at the least CPU usage possible only applications and games use the CPU. I already have Sound Blaster AE-7 to go with it.

    Check your motherboard block diagram to see if the PCIE slot you used goes directly to the CPU, or goes around via the chipset (which might be slower).

    If you are using Windows, utilizing a dual 10Gbe nic card can get you 20Gbps bandwidth with SMB multichannel as long as the NAS endpoint also has dual 10Gbe ports connected. I'm seeing speeds upto 2.10 GBps (16.8 Gbps) upload/download throughput.

      Definitely, just haven't dove in yet. it's probably the better option even over cat6 and would probably even be cheaper than buying these SFP+ to ethernet adapters. have you messed around with it yet?

    You should take a look at iperf (3) and see if you can get close (95%+ to wire speed...)

    • @clabretro
      @clabretro  Před rokem +2

      I ran some iperf3 tests after I filmed this video and I actually only get 4-5Gbits/sec, even between the two Dell servers which are connected directly through the aggregate switch. Flow Control and Jumbo Frames don't make a difference, so I have more investigation to do.

      I think the last server version they officially support is 2019. If I had to do it again I wouldn't get the X520 DA2, I didn't realize it didn't have newer driver support, probably better to get a newer card.
