She's almost 80 years old here. The 20th century saw 2 world wars and the greatest technological advancement in all of human history. I admire her longevity.
Her analysis on the relationship with Europe was dead on despite her own reservation on European integration, and even forseen the takeover of big European banks on the European monetary system (See: Euro Crisis 2012); She is truely a remarkable politician.
A brilliant articulate, reasoned, knowledgeable speech delivered with passion and belief devoid of bluster, delusion and ignorance. What happened to our politics and politicians that it is unlikely that we will hear anything remotely like it in the near future.
Baroness Castle was eighty when she made this speech. Whether or not one agrees with everything she says, she has mastered her brief and barely consults her notes (as others have commented). Compare her to today's Tory government and you see why those of us of a certain age who remember her at her very best regard the present government and one or two members of the opposition with disdain.
I consider myself a pro-european 'small c' conservative but Barbara was bang right on the Euro here. The Euro came 30 years too early. The Euro should have been introduced only with the very strongest economies first (France, Germany and maybe even the UK) and only have the other countries join when meeting strict criteria. Political theatre got in the way of sound economics.
A great politician and a great Orator, easily a Leader of the labour Party if given the chance.

What an excellent speech. And how right she was.

She spoke with astonishing lucidity for a person of her age
The Labor equivalent of Maggie?
Rather , Maggie was the Tory equivalent to Barbara
She predicts Black Wednesday here two years before it happened..
Great lady.

Why can't I hear anything? Maybe it's only on one side so-to-speak.
Shall we ever see and hear from her like again?
Doubt it. Class act though. Castle should have been Labour Leader.
@@garethbrown9191 yes she should and PM instead of “She Who Must be Obeyed”
She should have been the first female Prime Minister.
Hardly ever looked at her notes.....shows she has complete understanding of her subject, whether you agree with it or not.
Does anyone know who grey suit man is...?
Good question! I’d like to know too.
He looks a lot like the late duke of Westminster, though I wouldn't have thought he'd be sitting on the labour benches, so perhaps not.
the one at the end? it's former Lab PM Lord Callaghan of Cardiff
@@gurongpolitikal4013 Barbara’s greatest political enemy
😊
The only one in the room who looks to be under the age of 70?
Why were they saying NO and ‘sit down’ when she got up.
They were stopping another peer (the one behind her standing) from standing and speaking.
I can't hear a thing, & I have my volume up full blast.
Church enegmatic perhaps
We had quality then
Enoch Powell Tony Benn Hugh Gaitskell Mrs T etc
Simon Hughes also not bad
Last of the old Liberal Party
My socialist heroine!
If we were a one world government we wouldn't have weak economies.
