It's probably been returned by now, but if you still have it I would be really interested in seeing how the preamp sounds without running through the reverb and power amp. Maybe running it into some IR cabs, or even into a lower wattage power amp. I mean this thing sounds SO close to Eric Johnson that it casts shade on the "90% tone is in the fingers," line. I buil and repair amps. I always raise the point at to just how significant that 10% can be.
I've built several Dumble clones, mostly ODSs but a few SSS and modified SSSs. None sounded like that, i would be willing to sell off half my gear just to get access to an accurate schematic for that preamp.

There is a lot going on here that us video viewers cannot fully appreciate without actually playing it or being in the room. But, you do have to be tone deaf not to hear the VERY unique quality the quality of this set up. It wreaks of EJ recorded tone - Especially from the Tones album. Also, if you have ever seen him in the early 90's in a very small venue (ie. The Cubby Bear in Chicago) you may appreciate what you are hearing here more. I get what they are saying about not having to tweak the amp for it to sound incredible. I love all the nay sayer comments here - Something as rare as this is worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for it. And, my guess is that there are some folks willing to pay close to what is being asked, maybe not quite 400k but perhaps $350k. Time will tell. Super nice video. The chorus sound was off though...

Interesting I thought the Odyssey pushed the SSS not the other way around to get it to break up faster.. I Have the Dumble Ultra Phonix/Rockfonic 50 for sale it was built for Jamie Kime Zappa and I got it from Jedd Hughes who is Emmy Lou Harris and Rodney Crowels guitarist in Nashville.. I had it priced at market and then Alex passed and the Market changed Its priced at 80k obo. Has two channels clean and lead I ran reverb and delay post mic with it and same thing you put what ever pedal you want before it and maybe some tube screamer on lead side it sounds great straight in but reverb helps so does delay..
Im fully negotiable on price and the amp is near Dallas Tx id prefer not to ship but im sure something can be arranged ,, Best offer I think the reason this is priced at 399 is the last odyssey head and preamp sold for about that it was at 500 then went for around that same price so that set the market as it sold for that. I think EC paid Alex 100 k for his tweed bandmasters not sure if 100 each but that was the figure id heard. The Ultra features positive sustain on the clean side if you dime it or its up around the clean side will sustain as if it had ep3 preamp before it just rings and rings holds the chord.. The lead side has a lil chaos knob same as on the manzamp small red knob that is Gain or how much hair you want to add.. This amp is not smurfed or gooped epoxied but Alex hid some things below the boards jumpers and other goodies to throw someone off...learned alot from the amp..
Its a hybrid of sorts think creamy plexi lead and sss type cleans.. Has mid knob on back Alex etched the amp on back and of course the parts are signature as well the wiring....Perfect for a studio as it will get loud but same as this you can sit by it and not blow you down the block... I use a brown box with it as its finicky for specific wall current as all Dumbles are...Then lower the % and the cleans sparkle even more Solid as a tank...

For SRV you need the Dyna Comp. That's always been the first thing that jumped out to me in that song: that percussive "click" that ONLY a Dyna Comp produces.
I've built a few SSS clones and owned a 50W myself. I ended up selling the 50W because it was just punishingly loud and at the time there didn't really exist all the options we have now with IR cabs/load boxes, etc. I cannot imagine playing 150W. THIS would be the Dumble i would have if I could own any of them. Or at least any of the ones I've heard.
I've been playing EJ Strats since 2008, i used his strings for a decade and my favorite speaker has been the EJ1250 forever. One might think I'm a fanboy, but the reality is that i got into his playing from his gear, not the other way around like it normally happens. Ive been repairing guitars for 25 years. I think it was the third EJ model Strat that came in, they were all for setups and one pickup change. That was when i came to the conclusion that they were, hands down the best designed and constructed Strats that Fender were producing outside the CS. I knew of "Cliffs of Dover" at that point but i don't even remember if i knew who did it at that point yet. With the strings i wanted to go lighter on the plain but not the wound, but i didn't line heavy top/light bottoms because they always felt uneven across the board. I saw the EJ used heavy Low E/A and G, and light D/B and high E. They were perfect. With the speaker i had alnico Blue and Gold but needed a higher wattage speaker and it was his. Except his pics, which are fine but they're just pics, I've never used any piece of his signature gear that wasn't great. It's the benefit of having a player with an exception ear that actually does more than just select a few custom colors and maybe a custom pickup: you actually end up with something that was purposely designed The way it was for a specific reason. Look at the Strat: a 57 with a super light two-piece body, quartersawn neck, thinner headstock and staggered tuners so you don't need a string tree. The countersunk holes in the tremolo block so the ball ends only drop before the surface and it increases the string to block contact; the thin finish without the poly undercoat (I've seen debate on whether it does or not: it doesn't, I've stripped and done a refin on one myself, there was no poly under it). Once the let you get a rosewood board, it became the perfectly spec'd guitar.

The problem occurs when turning off the TS because the fuzz face starts conflicting with the impedance. I was always wondering by Dunlops gold EJF1 fuzz face sounds horrible by itself but you have to stack it with a TS pedal for it to work correctly. Try making a YT lesson about stacking an TS pedal before a fuzz face and using a EJF1 fuzz face with a TS pedal.

Back when EJ used the SSS as his dirty rhythm amp the TS wouldn’t always be on. He would sometimes engage the amps built in Pre Amp Boost instead or in addition to. He had a now defunct loop pedal he would use to toggle between a few different SSS sounds. These days, the TS is always on. I’ve owned two of his personal fuzz faces - one vintage and one signature. He had marked volume and fuzz levels. The fuzz level was set relatively low, since the buffer pushed the pedal. He’s noted that the TS interacts much better with vintage FF’s. I have a SSS #5 clone and it takes the pedal combo really well. If you try to run a buffered FF through a different amp circuit it can sound rather brittle… EG his Two RocK CLRS doesn’t interact as well as his Dumbles did.

You can see in the video that this was in circulation in the mid 1990's and published in a Guitar Player Magazine. If you study a bit harder you'll see that there were Dumble's in the rig since the 1980's that came and went from Steel String Singers, to Overdrive Specials, and the Manzamp pair with the Odyssey. The market has a way of self regulating. The last Dumble we did a video on a few months ago sold for $240,000 and wasn't used by any famous players or build for anyone notable. It also wasn't as rare as the Manzamp and Odyssey. If this is beyond the tolerance of the market, it'll come down in price, however I don't see it going for less than $300K. Of course, you'd need the amp to begin with, which might make the task a lot harder as access to these amps, especially with the intent to replicate, as most owners aren't anxious to have someone clone their Dumble. I'm sure any blind test would disabuse anyone of the notion of the clone underperforming the real amp if they can be made the same, but again there are a lot of steps to even get to that point. Yes, the amps are all different, but this one is especially unique - I've never seen another Manzamp like this, ever. Furthermore, it being built for Eric Johnson, and that sound, it's stands alone and separated from other Dumble amps. If someone is willing to pay it, that’s the price, and I imagine the laws of economics and supply and demand have worked like this predating the existence of Dumble. I’m sure the modelers of your choosing can get as close to a Dumble as they might any other amp (Marshall, Fender, etc.), but they’re still “modeling,” emulating something that is the real deal. They all have separated themselves from everything else in terms of their mysticism and consequently the prices reflect that.
As far as people being "sick" of Dumble amps, I can't say. I'm not sick of Dumble amps, but maybe the rest of the world is, or maybe you're just projecting your view of the landscape as it relates to Dumble amps which may be divorced from the larger community of guitar players. That's not for me to decide or say - I suppose if that's true, your sentiment will be echoed here in the comments.
We had a small window of opportunity to document a historical piece of gear, and we took it. Whether or not people are sick of Dumble amps or not, it doesn't seem like the perceived climate toward these amps should prevent one from taking advantage of such an opportunity.
