    My grandpa is a veteran. He was part of a ceremony on Saturday, honoring them. He isn't a loser. He fought for our country. My dad was an Air Force pilot. He still works for the USAF, even though he's not a pilot anymore. They understood, and understand, something that the former president never could. You can risk your life, or even die, for a cause. For your family. For your country. For your comrades.
    I am the oldest child in my immediate family, but I wasn't from my mom's first pregnancy. She lost that first pregnancy. And I am incredibly grateful she was able to get the medical care she needed. But had this happened post-Roe, she might not have had access to that care. That's terrible to think about.
    I'm going to think about them when I vote next year. All of my family, and all of my friends. We can't give up yet. Our greatest power is our votes. Together, we're stronger than the people that want to hurt and control us. And they are afraid of us. We just have to stick together, vote and encourage our family and friends to vote too. We. Can. Do. This.

      On the plus side, Trump has enough jealousy of the respect given to military personnel in the US that he typically has trouble refraining from insulting veterans and veteran issues, and most in the military are not are not Trump fans. So it helps that Trump was too stupid or too out of control to get the military on his side as part of his coup plans.

    • @KingBobXVI
      @KingBobXVI Před 7 měsíci

      "Everyone SAID they'd vote for Hilary, but then thought the polls were so favorable she couldn't lose, so they didn't vote"
      Hillary's vote count was very close to the polling close to the election, and remember, she did win the popular vote by about 3 million ballots. The problem is that _pundits_ who don't know statistics interpreted "51% chance in X rust belt state" as "99% chance to win" and reported on it as "Hillary has a 99% chance to win the election".
      Now, the voter apathy thing _did_ happen, I saw it very pronounced in my state of Washington (even in our primary process, regional delegates didn't bother showing up because I guess they assumed Hillary would win, and they were her delegates!), but the polling shouldn't be ignored, just better understood in the context of the electoral college. One thing worth noting though, is that polling this early does tend to have little bearing on the actual election (Obama also was polling horribly at this stage), but it shouldn't be brushed aside next October/November.

      She ran the worst campaign in history. Trump had exactly one route to victory and focused his limited resources on that, especially activating apolitical voters who hadn’t voted before. Rather than going on the offensive in her “safe” blue wall, and meeting trump where he was campaigning, they dilly dallied and somehow got caught unawares with the stupid wiener emails. It’s beyond me how the gop became so weak that it could have been taken over by this fascist wannabe. So yes. Vote vote vote blue until the another party emerges that is pro democracy.

    • @Itried20takennames
      @Itried20takennames Před 7 měsíci

      True, pretty much anyone one is a lesser evil than Trump, but what the Dems should have seen was that Hilary wasn’t a strong candidate, and I say that as a lifelong Dem and a woman. I don’t like father-son, husband-wife political family inbreeding in the Presidency, and Hilary was too much of a Weather Vane, pointing wherever the winds blew that day, including voting for the Iraq war.
      And I think Biden is doing well…but God help us if he has a health scare right before the election. The Trump fiasco is 95% on Republicans, but 5% on Dems for having weak candidates that made Trump feasible.

What I hadn't thought about is how PETTY and VENGEFUL he is and the fact that he'd be seeking revenge. Good Lord. That's scarier than him getting elected the first time.

      As a Brit, I don't understand Americans' claims of 'ultimate patriotism' plus the way Veterans' Day (Armistice Day in most of the world) is 'celebrated'.
      And he takes it to a whole different level.
      Just for comparison, at 11am on 11/11, we have a 2minute silence - everywhere. Radios, TVs observe it; shops make announcements; church bells ring &people everywhere stop & stand still for 2 minutes.
      This year, I was at a gymnastics display (mainly kids & teens) & it was observed there.
      Nobody says "Happy Veterans' Day" - it's sombre, not happy; any shop that attempted to have a sale would likely be boycotted/ avoided that day at least.
      Any politician who spoke like that would be crucified in the media. Our politicians (as much as I dislike them) lay poppy wreaths, alongside military & civilian groups (on the nearest Sunday). People line the streets to pay respects.
      If you search yt for "remembrance Sunday 2023" you can see it. (Add Edinburgh or Glasgow to that search & you get some pipe bands in the marches too.)
      Even before that idiot, there is no national observance. When I was living in the US, I made a clay poppy pin to wear in November because it felt wrong to ignore it.

    This is not the first time the Ohio legislature has ignored a ballot initiative. Just before the last census, we voted overwhelmingly (70%) to establish an independent body to redraw districts to undo our terribly gerrymandered state. They literally just ignored it and drew their own maps. The courts threw out the bad maps, but then the legislature kept submitting bad ones, delaying last year's primary until late last summer, when the courts let them use their bad maps. Then those judges got voted out in the election done with illegally drawn districts.
    This year was even worse. They passed a law outlawing special ballot initiatives in August because of poor communication/turnnout, and then, when it became clear there would be a pro-abortion motion on the ballot, they broke their own law by declaring a special election that would have drastically reduced the ability to vote on statewide initiatives. When that didn't work, they changed the submitted wording on the ballot for the abortion amendment, making the language as offensive as possible, and then launched campaigns lying about the contents of the motion. It's absolutely disgusting.
    It's made it really difficult to believe in voting at all. What's the point of voting for something if the people in power can just ignore it without any consequences? Democracy only works when we all agree to the rules and follow them. That is not what has been happening in the Ohio legislature.

      If you vote in South Dakota be prepared that if the Republicans don't like what the people voted in, they just make it go away. In 2017 voters voted for anti-corruption law. Republicans repealed it, more or less saying voters didn't know what they were doing. The governor at that time, used an emergency clause to make an immediate reversal. That clause prevented a new referendum campaign in response. In 2020 e legal recreational cannabis was voted in by the people. Noem stepped in and said the voters of South Dakota didn't know what was good for them. So she stopped the bill from going into effect. The next time it was voted on in 2022 legal cannabis was not voted in. Probably due to the *Refer Madness* campaign by those Republicans making sure it would never be legal because Noem wants it that way.

Even during the civil war, they didn't want "states' rights" to own slaves, they were actively seceding because they were unable to force northern states to recognize escaped slaves as property and return them to the south.
      They hate local governance if it disagrees with their rhetoric, and they love federal overreach when it agrees with them.

    A friend of mine from an Asian country said that people in her country at some point were considering to apply electoral college system similar like the one in the US. Currently the person who got the most votes wins. As the consequences, development in less populated regions often take a back seat, because the country leaders tend to focus on most populated regions to secure the votes. However, after watching what happened in the US they're like, "Nope, we are good." 😂🤣😂🤣

      yes, that is the problem with most votes wins, and why electoral college exist. the disadvantage of electoral college however is that now less populated states have deciding power over the most populated states. it only makes sense in the US because the states are very independent, but for the majority of countries it makes sense that the more populated states have more power to decide, since they have more people.
