Despite renewables we still rely on our Onan / Cummins generator when the sun doesn't shine. However, after forgetting to close the sea water shutoff valve I completed melted the raw water cooling system on our generator.
In this maintenance blog I strip down and completely rebuild the cooling system replacing the waterlock / muffler, impeller, exhaust and cooling water hoses.
If you're a professional, expert or even an old salty sea dog with some good advice on how to repair a Onan / Cummins marine generator.. or even how to fix a Onan / Cummins marine diesel powered engine, then please leave any constructive criticism, insight and advice in the comments below the videos.

hello mate from the other part of the world :) some suggestions from me :) 1 make another sea cock to have the genset separated and easily used for the main engine in case of emergency ;) 2 see if you can manage to rig that stop solenoid to the alarm system as this could have been easily avoided , that onan is equipped with 3 shut down alarms, low oil pressure , high coolant temp and high exhaust temperature, these only work if the system is connected to a functional shut off solenoid :) if that is not possible to fix or too expensive (ask me how I know ) you can always order a temperature gauge with alarm and install one on the exhaust and another on the engine coolant , whilst you are at it an oil pressure alarm and its all set , sure you can find on ebay or aliexpress etc , keep it up and if you need you know where to reach out :) fair winds and say hi to all :)

So much extra work due to a simple seacock mistake. I hope it works out in the long run

Thank you, great video, but I find the language difficult. I hope that if you have time in the future, you will bring these elements above the long one, how they are connected to each other and their role in cooling. I am weak in English.

Easy error to make. I've done something similar and now always hang a key or a tag on the start switch when I do anything to the engine so I know to check everything before just mindlessly starting it. It doesn't always work with new people who might not realize what the tag/key means but at least you will get a bit of a reminder. It's saved me from having to McGyver in remote locations (which you are exceedingly good at). Glad you got it sorted out and that you didn't have to dive in Salty infested waters to find that adapter!

Here in Switzerland you can have two cars and one registration plate. Of course it's easy to drive off without having changed the registration plate - potential big fine. So I have a sign saying 'Don't be stupid!' on the steering wheel of the car without the registration plate to remind me not to dive it without changing it. Since then there's been a 100% reduction in stupidity. Well, number plate stupidity.
