    -- Erdogan as important to Turkey as Ataturk, and trying to shape it in his own image as significantly as Ataturk did decades ago.
    -- They’re at the opposite ends of the spectrum in their beliefs: Ataturk was a militant secularist, Erdogan a committed Islamist
    -- Erdogan’s rise shows arc of Turkish history, from democracy to an ever more theocratic authoritarian state
    -- This all matters because a more religious version of Vladimir Putin is now at the helm of the biggest, richest and most militarily powerful US ally in the region.

      Turkey's a tough partner of the USA (nato, weapons supplied to turkey , recep wants same things, etc. etc.) , he might be a bit strongarmy 'too much ' on the surface but you don't want a wuss, either, as a nato outpost in a 'hot' part of the world,.

      @@gabrieleporru4443 oh really? So how’s the continues transfer of power doing in the Middle East? Human rights? It became more obvious that the US uses these sort of things as a pressure card, and that they would be friendly to you as long as you’re obedient (regardless of human rights violations and dictatorship) and that’s a worrisome thing actually. Biden recently refused to condemn China for their inhumane concentration camps, saying “it’s just China’s different way of doing things” lol I don’t wanna assume he ignored this horrible issue because of his money in China!! Or perhaps to favour financial gains (for American corporations) over criticising a modern day holocaust.

      @@darkness595 another thing to add the UN and "human rights " are all based on subjective morality and they can not prove their stand at all.
      therefore all their intervenes weather it's " humane" or not can't be proven morally and they can't prove that's terrorism is good or bad.
      what am trying to say is this system is belt on hypocrisy and when Objective moral people start to realize than they will take action and subjectisim will have no answer when the objective moral people start action and they can't say it's " good or bad ".
      even if objective moral people did wrong the subjective people can't prove it's wrong since it's all subjective.
      even so atheist can't prove what's good or bad in all topics other than morality. for example, an atheist says to someone you are Bac-kward and that someone says is being Back- ward good or bad ? here if you know chess , then the atheist have been C7ed completely. they can't prove being whatever is good or bad. and so on and so on.

    The things said in 5:41 are wrong or incomplete. The soldiers who want to carry out this coup are the soldiers of a community that is not loyal to Atatürk, worked with Erdoğan before and had a conflict of interest. After this conflict, they wanted to stage a coup first in the political party and then in the country. But Erdogan did not allow this by calling his followers to the streets. In fact, those who took to the streets did nothing. Most of the soldiers there are insignificant privates. They didn't even know what was going on there. When they were told the truth, many surrendered to the police. Unfortunately, many are still on trial. They are even forcibly detained without trial. There are even only military students among them. If there was a coup supported by the people. It would definitely be successful. However, there are almost no followers of Atatürk in the military who are strong enough to make a coup. Many soldiers are now members of extremist religious sects.

      Venezuela. Executions and no freedom of speech in China and human right violations in Saudi Arabia, Turkey is a dangerous country and has broken multiple rules during the past 50 years, including one from the geneva conection, I'm not saying that we should start a war but we should keep a close eye and be stricter then are.

    Mistakes:
    -AKP didn't intend to "help the religious, oppressed by secularism" always. They became anti-secular in late 2000s. Before that
    Erdogan looked pretty liberal, he even said he was pro LGBT rights.
    -The coup was not a secular coup, it was staged by another religious group. The Kemalist leaders of the army were purged in an investigation called Ergenekon, years before the coup. The army haven't been Kemalists since then. The Kemalists were replaced by FETO members, a very large islamist group which (allegedly) staged the coup.
    -The referendum was rigged. The electoral council started counting unofficial ballots mid-count, and a Turkish news agency started releasing official Yes/No percentages way before the electoral council did, no one really knows how they got the numbers before electoral council released them. The count was live too, so electoral council knew about this agency releasing its numbers, and they let them. There are a lot of speculations about this.
    -While it wasn't really a mistake, it's important to note that Ataturk was also a democratically selected "dictator". So it's not like the Turkish people were all islamists and Ataturk tried forcing his ideas upon them. And also most of his laws were democratically created, in fact he only used his "dictator" powers in the war of independence.
    -Ban on headscarves wasn't done by Ataturk (was done in the 90s), and also it wasn't a total ban. Only from government institutions.

But this was all for a Turkey which would've contained people who won't be "brainwashed" as we see today unfortunately.

    • @kbertan
      @kbertan Před 7 lety +73

      Erdoğan and AKP were ALWAYS anti-secular, the whole "I've changed" act was very fishy from the start, but western world failed to see that (maybe chose not to). And the ones saying "it's an act" were blamed of being paranoid Kemalists. The simple fact is, after becoming jailed Erdoğan realized that he has to be clever about his Islamist agenda and the current power balance in Turkey would not let him go in "guns blazing" and change everything. So he started to act "secular and liberal" to gain the sympathy of west.
      It worked because the military presence over Turkish Democracy has always been a problem. And reducing that military control would mean a healthier democracy. However, they removed the military by a rigged court and fabricated evidence, and instead of creating a healthier democracy, they just took that power to themselves.
      The LGBT question was asked in an university, before he was elected as the prime minister, and of course he said he's respectful to their rights. Has he said anything else on this issue after he was elected? He didn't even go to TV debates after he was elected. Something that hasn't been mentioned in the video is the Kurds. Erdoğan was much more tolerant to the Kurds because it was in his interest. a) It worked very well for EU relations and the stability in general, b) It pissed off the Kemalists. But after he gained total control, after he didn't need the western popularity, he just treated them the same way Kemalist regime has been treating them in the 90's.
      I'm sorry that it was a long answer, I agree on most of what you said. But the "AKP were great at the beginning, but then they changed" storyline is such a BS one, and it's been told so many times. At the beginning AKP just did the things Kemalists should've done, but never could. Like reducing the military presence over democracy, and working on the Kurdish problem. After they gained a firm grip on the country, they just returned to their old selves.

      Well most people outside Turkey do not know this but actually majority of the Turkish population have always been against headscarf ban including secular people. The ones who were against it was a small but powerful minority. Erdogan could have abolished the ban as soon as he came to power and I am sure people would support it because they did supported it when the ban was abolished later. But he didn't abolished the law immediately because he and his party were secretly okey with women wearing headscarfs not being able to go to the universities and getting a job. They were and still are against women actively participating in social life, they wanted these women (which makes more than 50% of adult women in Turkey) to stay at home marry and have children. So headscarf wasn't just a good tool they use to make woman stay at home but also a reason for blaming secular people for the ban and demonize them. Turkey's opposition party (which is a secular one) had gone under huge change with the new opposition party leader during Erdogan's power and the headscarf ban actually abolished after the opposition party leader said "we see headscarf ban as an unfair discrimination against women." After this (10 years later he first came to power) Erdoğan panicked and abolished the law immediately. Because he was always lying about how he wanted to abolish the law but "anti-religion evil secular"s in the government are not letting him.

    Reading Turkish people's writing from all different sides of the spectrum in English on this thread was 100x more educational than the video -- and it was actually a pretty solid video. Thank you all Turkish, Kurdish, Ataturk supporters and Erdogan supporters for voicing your opinion and your arguments in English.
    It was very interesting to read, as our media and educational system is so hyperfocused on itself instead of the rest of the world, we rarely get to hear regular peoples' candid and unedited opinions about the state of their nation directly from them.

      +Ĥ є ჯ є Ņ The Western mainstream media and educational system's failure to focus more on something other than itself or its points of view, is not really something they can be blamed for. Reasons are possibly somewhat complex to fit in here (or I'm just incredibly lazy), but you can be certain that in most (all?) other countries mainstream media networks and educational systems do the same. A similar narrow view, only from their side, modified to suit their needs.
      That's why it pays to follow content from as many media networks as you can afford to, and not just mainstream. If you know the language or find publications in English, try foreign as well. All of which are sometimes or oftentimes broadcasting conflicting or completely bypassing stories. Understandably, this method can be time-consuming. However, when you feed your logical apparatus enough, with the help of rationality, it will start sorting things out, allowing you to draw your own conclusions. Which may or may not be correct - but as long as you're aware of this, you should do fine. Better than most, actually.

    @astragalusson Před 7 lety +1070

    Main things that need to be corrected in the video according to me are:
    1. Ataturk had somewhat dictatorial-ish powers as the founder, plus he had almost full support of the citizens as the war hero. But he didn't want to be a dictator as he tried to bring multi-party system a few times, unfortunately couldn't manage to do it before his death because in every attempt small but somewhat effective Islamist groups who hated secular change tried to abuse it, caused him to postpone the plans before it becomes a major crisis. Also, the only thing he dictated was secularism related stuff which he thought was the only way to protect the country from repeating the later Ottoman mistakes.
    2. Headscarfs were only banned for public servants only during their jobs in their work place and for students. Its purpose was (whether you agree or not if it's the right decision) to prevent discrimination between women wearing head-scarfs and who are not in the process of getting government jobs, promoted or getting grades as students, and/or to prevent creating any concern of discrimination in the minds of people who receive the service. Because significant percentage of Islamist people naturally (without even thinking) see head-scarfed women as better muslims, and has a bias that better muslims have higher morality so they could/should be privileged. Because of that notion and because you couldn't and shouldn't ban head-scarfs from the public all together, they thought this ban could at least minimize government based discrimination and any concern of discrimination of that kind. Now the ban is over, and after the referendum, new laws and rules concerning public-servants are on the way which are going to weaken (if not remove) the job-security of public servants, bring less-transparent and corruptable recruitment methods and promotion standards. As a result, naturally female public-servants who are not wearing head scarfs are one of the groups that feel under threat which is also an example of those discrimination concerns I tried to explain.
    3. The 2016 coup was not executed by secular Kemalists. There's an Islamist movement which began in 60s or 70s following a cult leader called Fethullah Gulen, which slowly grew socially and ecconomicly by connecting with mainly religious, conservative, less educated and low-income people of Turkey in the name of so called public service and Islam. Provided scholarships for poor people's kids, helped their education, tried to attract clever students to their schools and other educational structures. Tried (succeded in some degree) to brainwash suitable religios oriented kids (detected throughout their education) with Gulen's teachings making them believe they serve for a higher holly purpose. Later, canalized them into studying especially management, law and other fields which are main branches recruited in the government. Then tried to place/infiltrate its followers (who act as they're not from the movement) first in the critical duties which are related to recruitment, promotion, justice department, intelligence and police; then in time, all around the government, except military in some degree as military was more selective and also had strict disciplinary methods against possible cultist or Islamists. The Gulen movement's secrets and goals begin to be exposed by journalists, secular politicians and those claims had decent media coverage in the late 90s and early 2000s. Investigations began which caused Gulen to flee to USA, but after AKP (Erdogan's party) came to power in 2002, the allegations were quickly dropped and media coverage began to diminish except secular opposition's constant warning about the threat which AKP dismissed until 2014 or so. In AKP ruling, the Gulen movement became stronger and stronger in the government, law and police force (and in every field of governmental public service) as AKP didn't have enough qualified people and built a partnership with them. Also they passed laws that especially built a highway for Gulenists to rise in justice department. They also managed to take control the government central exam system that recruits public servants and even military students. Plus, AKP constantly tried to weaken the military firewall I mentioned. After Gulen had enough power in the police and justice department; various anti-military allegations, investigations, lawsuits began which ended up many military generals and high-ranked officers arrested using manifactured false evidence. Although those evidence proven to be totally false, and despite continous opposition warnings, AKP supported those lawsuits for a long long time. The imprisonement, dismissal and/or resignment of many generals and high-ranked officers opened a window for lower-ranked secretly gulenist officers to rise in the military which they took, and Gulen had a decent power in the military as a result. After AKP and Gulen movement had some disagreements in 2014, their fight for power began. First Gulenist tried to bring down Erdogan with corruption lawsuits about ministers and their sons, including Erdogan's son using the concrete evidence they easily collected during their partnership and government power. But Erdoğan managed to tear the lawsuits down quickly using his political power fiercely and creating a vast media propaganda campaign using the media who he slowly took control over the years. After this attempt he tried to weaken Gulen by confiscating media owned by Gulen (which fanatically supported Erdogan until their break-up by the way) and Gulen controlled companies and a bank of Gulen's, which are thought to be the main financial sources of Gulen organization. Then comes the Gulenist officers' coup attempt who weren't enough to control the whole military which is why the coup attempt failed, not that Erdogan invited people to streets. If the whole military joined the coup with full power and didn't hesitate to use fire power againts resistance (not only in a few places but everywhere) nobody could stop it. There are many uncovered secrets and serious doubts about the coup too, but I won't be going there in this post because it would be speculation.
    4. Now Erdoğan declared Gulen organisation as a terrorist one (which is actually justified) and he is using the coup attempt and state of emergency laws to get rid of any opposition because it made a perfect excuse for him to fire and/or jail people at will, as there really were many Gulenists in the government (and in every part of the community) but public doesn't know who are. He and his supporters can blame anyone being a secret Gulenist and that is now a major oppression method going on. He already accused the opposition being a partner with Gulenists (the same opposition who constantly warned him about the Gulen threat and always fought against Gulen's false lawsuits) during the referendum. Unfortunately, if he's elected the president with the new powers (which he probably will be because he already controls the election system in the justice department which declared about 2,5 million illegal votes legal during the referendum), the power will single-handedly be his and the state of emergency laws will be the norm in the country.
    Added: Hours after I wrote this, the very popular biggest secular opposition newspaper (which always has been against Gulen organisation and fight against their false lawsuits) and its owner and editors are under heavy investigation for supposedly helping Gulen organisation and trying to overthrow the government. Their buildings are being searched by the police at the moment. Probably I am next for writing this comment, seriously.
