I haven't heard a modern soprano (post 1970) besides Margaret Price that sings this with as much musicality and warmth of tone and stylistically on the money as Kiri in this performance.

My god, she does it better than anyone! Other great sopranos sound "choppy" compared to Kiri when performing this aria. The fluidity she achieves is astounding. It feels utterly seamless. As if the entire aria was sung all in one breath. Of course it wasn't, as any student of voice knows. But it feels that way. And if one looks at the meaning of the lyrics, one is even more blown away. Her fluid style perfectly expresses the meaning of the words.
No need to be so nasty! This is a fine performance! She may not be the most expressive singer but she has had a very successful career because she has one of the most beautiful voices. This must be close to 30 years ago, but she is still singing well!

Easy on the ears, not so easy on the eyes. That dress must have been visible from the Moon! However, despite her dubious sartorial choices, she is the epitome of vocal chic.
But even the great Tebaldi doesn't come across as seamless as Te Kanawa. And Tebaldi does it in under 3 minutes. So I don't think it's really the overall length. After all, everyone, professional and amateur, takes breaths every couple of measures. Nobody really sings an aria from beginning to end in one continuous breath. I was merely talking about subjective feel.
With a voice and artistry like that, she can wear anything she wants.

I heard Kiri do this in her mid-sixties in Scarborough (a town in the north of England) and although not like this, it was absolutely brilliant!
