    I shoot landscapes and when I first got into photography about two years ago, I always thought that I had to use my wide angles to get a good scene that shows scale. I found more often than not, the shots were hard to compose, as it can be difficult to balance an interesting foreground to an epic background.
    I borrowed a friends super telephoto and found that the compositions were a lot easier to get tighter compositions that were more mysterious and intruiging. You can capture the finer details of a scene and it adds to the story of a place.
    I bought the 100-400mm G and it never leaves my backpack... even on 15 kilometre hikes through the Alberta backcountry. It's such a versitile lens!

    Hi Chris, your enthusiasm is clear to see for this lens. I'm now seriously thinking of buying one too, after reflecting on where my priorities ought to be. I have a 200-600 G which only ever comes out for specific events (mostly sports) when I know it will be worth the effort carrying. Whilst by no means compact I'm now thinking this 100-400 GM could make a great travel lens, bypassing the 70-200 option. Main downside is speed vs typical f2.8 default tele-zoom choice.
    I'm lucky in that I already own a lot of lovely glass, in zooms already having a 16-35 GM f2.8 and a 24-105 f4 G. I used to own a 70-200 Sony f4, but traded that for a Tamron 70-180 f2.8.
    Yet mostly I prefer primes when I can use them, but they are hard and slow to travel with. Taking about 5-6 primes is difficult, can be slow, inconvenient and lead to missed shots in trying to use when you don't know what you will be encountering. Like with my 200-600 they tend to be for specific events or day trips. The GM 135 f1.8 is lovely but limited in application. 90mm macro the same, also both hefty. The 35mm GM 1.4 is great for making subjects pop from a background. I'm also loving my 20mm f1.8. For astro and love of wide composition with a strong foreground. I had initially thought that a 14mm f1.8 (by all accounts excellent) would be my next lens. But I can shoot astro/landscape with my 20mm f1.8 or 24mm f1.4 so maybe a 14mm is overkill given my 16-35?
    Reflecting on never packing my 200-600 G for travel or 'just in case' use. I can see how a 3-lens travel kit comprising 16-35 GM, 55mm f1.8 prime and 100-400 GM may make sense. For me that would be considered minimalist and better than my typical approach of taking far to much.

    I'm guessing this lens gets overlooked due to the fact that you can pair a 70-200mm with a 200-600mm to cover even more focal range without needing the 100-400mm. I currently have the 24-105mm so pairing it with the 100-400mm makes sense if 400mm is the most you need.

    • @scb2scb2
      @scb2scb2 Před 3 lety +6

      Point is less handy for travel, 200-600 is nice no doubt but the 100400GM+tc1.4 can be in my bag 100% of the time and i can shoot near macro (90cm focus) to 840mm with TC1.4 and in crop mode on the R4 (still 26megapixels no aa filter). For daytime i also use the same combo 1635GM+24-105g+100400GM+tc1.4 perfect for a small bag.

    • @TheReelRaymond
      @TheReelRaymond Před 3 lety

      @@scb2scb2 That's true that it sort of depends on the bag you carry. The 70-200mm + 200-600mm kit has two large lenses and still probably requires another two for most traveling photographers and videographers, likely something like a 24-70mm + favorite wide aperture prime.

    I wholeheartedly agree with you! Since I got my 100-400 GM, it has transformed my photography. I use it for at least 60-70 percent of my photography.

    As a transitioning focus on Landscape Photography, I've recently (a year ago) sold all my gear to move to the RF mount, which allowed me to evaluate my lenses. I've never had a 100-400 (had 6 lenses in total) but the more I thought about what I wanted in my bag all the time the more it made sense, with all the other gear I lug around my 2 lens choice was the 15-35 and 100-500. I have a few other wants for some specific things but I'll try this out for a while but I'm thinking it'll be forever.

    I use to shoot all the time on the 100-400, wasn't mine it was on lone, I can say it was easily one of the, if not, the most versatile lenses in my kit and I miss it so much! I look forward to the day we can be reunited once again.

    I was tempted with one yesterday. Way out of my budget range but maybe some day I was able to by another 75 300 canon . I wore out the used one iwas given 12 years ago. That was a stretch forme but I'm happy to have another one. Thanks for your video it game me some good landscape tips. I've been doing photography over 50 years and still learning and using my skills with what I have.

    Both the 100-400 and the 150-600 are popular lenses amongst nature/sport photographers especialy crop sensor users.
    Amazing compression and reach. You should give the Tamron G2 or the Sigma S 150-600 a try...

    I use the Sigma 100-400 on my a6400 with the MC-11 converter (Canon EF- Sony E) and that is my second favorite lens in my kit. It's so light and compact it fits nicely in my bag and I take it everywhere my camera goes. It's also about 3x cheaper then the Sony native.
