TR&CI 133: Rare Times You CAN'T Choose The Order For Replacement Effects - Part 1

- In this episode of Tough Rules & Cool Interactions, I will be talking about Replacement Effects, but specifically how to handle multiple Replacement Effects... BUT more specifically one of those rare times that you are not allowed to pick the order in which the REs apply because the game actually forces you to apply a certain RE before another. This will be part 1 and I guess we will just see how many additional parts happen down the line.

Never noticed how detailed Act on Impulse artwork is, really pretty :O
Oh yeah, love the art on that one. The smile, just so perfect.
"Bonus episodes" HAHAHA! I love that you kept that in and even pointed it out. Had I not seen the visual in the middle, I would never have noticed that you didn't say bonus question. As for the bonus question, I want to say it's a forced scenario like the primary scenario in the episode, and I think the forced first one to apply is the doubling season. The emissary seems like it is contained within the creation event, so the game will force two different tokens to be made, and then as they're made you pick an individual (or same) card type for each one.
Nicely done!
I always like these followup episodes that are just a long running mini series. Each one dives just a bit deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole of the same topic.
Not all too sure how many of these I'll dive down more into, but at least one that I know for sure. It's actually a subscriber requested one a long, long time ago.
My instinct is that the controller would get to choose different types. I'm not familiar enough with the CR to know if that is a forced decision, but I imagine that if there was not a choice, the number of permanents being made would happen before how they enter.
After consulting the CR, I will say that it is a forced decision to make more tokens before choosing a card type for Serra's Emissary. There's even a nice example with Doubling Season and Voice of All, which states "because entering the battlefield is an even contained within the even of creating a token, the effect of Doubling Season must be applied first".
Props to you! You got it right on the money.
I’m unsure if the doubling season’s effect contains the Serra Emissary effect, but it shouldn’t matter. Since each Serra Emissary is independent from each other, and has its own ability, each choice is separate. If the doubling season contains the Emissary effect, then it applies first anyway, by which point the new emissary effects will be seen and applied separately.
Bonus bonus! The voice made on the original Emissary is not a Copiable value, so what you chose for it doesn't restrict what the new tokens would have. And also yes, the DS's RE will apply first, then the RE on the Emissary will apply later.
Good video as always
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
"The move to graveyard event is part of the destroy event" Makes sense but is there a rule saying so
Would this be similar to using regenerate instead of umbra armor?
maybe
Yeah, regenerate is another replacement effect, so it would work in much the same way. But instead of losing an aura, you'd just have a tapped creature.
Yup, Ziggy gotcha
That Ghired was on screen for just a bit. I hadn't seen him yet, but that card is crazy. Am i reading it right?
I know, right? It goes infinite with a ton of super cheap cards, which is a lame way to win. But even if you are not going infinite that card is busted. I don't ever look forward to playing against it. At least it isn't as bad as Nadu.
Yes, that Ghired is crazy, and yes, that Nadu is much more crazy. Cards are just crazy these days, and for such low MV.
