Remo Williams Pilot Golf Scene

  • This is from an old VHS recording of the Remo Williams TV pilot. I thought this scene was pretty cool. It never lived as a series. Probably because the movie was awesome because Fred Ward and Joel Grey did such good jobs. Most of the time, I find yellowface to be rather insulting, like David Carradine in Kung Fu stealing the part from Bruce Lee.

      I adored them, at least the earlier books. But I was always disappointed that they didn't follow up on Remo's daughter. Apparently she was a creation of one of the ghost writers, and Sapier was not a fan.
      There was a short lived young adult series featuring her, but it was very badly written.

    I read once where Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir were feuding in the late 1970s over something unrelated to the Destroyer books, and since they each wrote a portion of the books, one of the two decided to only write literally half of the book, sending the manuscript to the other, with the first half stopping not only in the middle of a sentence, but in the middle of a word! Sapir died in 1987, and Murphy used ghost writers for a while, and then his son, Will Murphy took over about 1989 or so.

    If I remember the book Created, the Destroyer correctly, this is the guy who "tried" to kill Remo while he and Master Chuin were walking down a city street. Chuin was proud that, even in "death", Remo centered his body. Chuin brought him back from "the brink" and chastised him for not seeing (being aware of) what was coming. Also, the would-be assassin wasn't too happy when he next met Chuin. Great read!!!

    @SpaceOdyssey56 Před 12 lety +4

    Roddy McDowell was chosen for the role of Chiun due to his distinctive voice.
    Casting Jeffrey Meek as Remo was a major blunder, however. If Fred Ward was either unavailable or unwilling to commit to a TV series, they should have gotten Joe Penny or Ed Marinaro, as both were familiar faces on television at the time, and were physically appropriate for the role. Meek sunk this pilot like a torpedo.

      This clip is all I've seen of the TV pilot, don't recall hearing of it before.
      My only major complaint about Roddy McDowell's performance is that he seems to be going too fast. Joel Grey's version was slower, more methodical, as if timing of words and motions was everything (appropriate for the character). I know Roddy could do that; in this case it may have been the constraints of the pilot duration required a certain pace.

    I was mocked on Philly WIP sports radio when I mentioned "Remo Williams..." as a fun and terrific 80's movie choice to go back and watch! It's a normal side chatter for the show to ask an aside poll question and entertain suggestions from side areas to sports.They hated me for saying how indispensable Carson Wentz was to the Eagles in winning their only SB in '17,'18 so they lept at any avenue to pan and mock me. It was totally ignorant of them to dismiss "Remo Williams" as a memorable movie from that time period.

    I believe Roddy McDowel became ill shortly afterwards and passed away (Not sure), and they did wait just a bit too long to make a sleeper hit like Remo Williams into a TV series. I saw this pilot when it first aired, and I'm also sure that cultural appropriation as well as Mr. McDowell's health problems had a lot to do with it never going forward.
