We tracked Exile In Oblivion with Matt Hyde. Drums were done at Sound City and guitar/bass/vocals at Hollywoodland Studios.
Matt had tremendous input helping us mature as songwriters.
Right on!! Thanks for watching dude!
Hi Chris.
This is the album that got me into the band and is my favorite by a mile.
I think that I went to just about every show during this tour in California. This was a great album also. I still have a box full of tshirts from this Vans warped tour 2005 that I collected. Thanks for the memories Chris. Look forward to seeing you guys again. Rick Cruz
I'll admit that Exile is not exactly my favorite album, but considering the musical trends of the time, you couldn't have chosen a better time to release it so hats off.
Thanks for the kind works sir! Glad we could bring some Thrash to the Fat, definitely my fav style growing up!🤘🏼
Sir, I just want you to know that when I bought the 'Live Fat, Die Young' compilation in 2001, I was a high school senior down here in Bama. Me and my girlfriend popped it in and listened, hung out, talked. Then "Novacain" came on -- then I replayed it -- then I replayed it -- then my girlfriend gave me that look, so I got back to flirting and whatnot. You guys are awesome. Just wanted you to know.
You guys are easily my favorite band of any genre, been a fan ever since hearing Somnombulance on the TB5 snowboard movie intro, and you shaped a lot of my musical interests and my own guitar playing style. Cant thank you enough for providing us so much great music for 3 decades now. Also glad I saw this cause I hadnt listened to TAD in a while, I d forgotten what a sick album it is.
@@ST19859 Thanks so much Steve that really means alot!
@@jakekiley4264 Anytime Mr Kiley, you guys are amazing musicians who deserve the recognition. You just made my day responding to this post too !
Heck yeah Jake
Underrated band they should be up there with Bad Religion and NOFX
they are
@@Pogdub he means they should be as popular, which they’re not
@@toddpacker4683 they kind of made it that way. I think they liked their cult club following. Thats why their shows were so fun
@@CZcamsluvsGroomers I first heard this band via live recordings, and they were brutal. But I remember how disappointed I was when I first heard their studio album. I felt it had none of the energy of the live performance.
Matchbook is the best melodic thrash song ever written
Just skimmed over Transmission Alpha Delta?! That album is a fuckin underated killer!
To me its our best work, best sounding for sure! Thanks dude!
@@jakekiley4264 The sound of that album is amazing! I personally like Songs of Armor and Devotion better but I wish it had the same sound as TAD
@@VideogameStageRemaker Thank you that’s great to hear!
@@jakekiley4264 I also think Transmission.Alpha.Delta is the best Strung Out album. The sound engineering is incredible, maybe the best sounding album I have ever heard.
I have to plus one these comments about the production. Kyle Black is my number 1 producer/mixer since I heard this album. Absolutely amazing playing on it by all you guys too. You can't hav one without the other.
I listen to Teenage Wasteland all the time . Amazing band. Jim Cherry’s songs are just so good. I like their newer stuff as well, but those 90’s albums are top tier skate punk for sure
Some of the tightest and most well played music in punk. One of my all time favorites personally. Doesnt get much better than it!
Thank so much guys!
I think Strung Out, Propagandhi, Lagwagon and No Use For A Name were the most technical bands in the skate punk/pop punk/melodic hardcore scene of the 90s,and I love them.
Great video, Strung Out are such an underrated band, thanks for this
I will never understand why people dont hear there songs the way i do. The written of their music is so intelligent and every melody are unique. For me, i have a top 3, it is Strung out, Lagwagon and No use for a name. Those bands sounds totally unique. Strung out age like fine wine, they never stop to amaze me how they can be super technical and still be melodic.
@@friedrichglasblaser7185totally agree and in that order too.
Jason and Tony Sly are such exceptional writers AND their voice and nuances and attitude have them in the upper echelon of all punk vocalists.
Joey cape is up there too
Musicianship.....Strung Out for sure. Song writing......NUFAN.
Jim Cherry was someone who comes along once on a life time and was beyond incredible.
I've seen them play over 100 times from "92" up until there last tour throughout California. I never got tired of seeing them. They are bunch of great guys and would put me on the guest list to a lot of there shows. They are definitely underated compared to other bands. I think that there first three albums are the best but I still have favorite songs from all of there albums. I am in my 50's and I am still looking forward to seeing these guys again in the future.
dude holy shit you came up seeing all their local band 3 dollar shoes n shit?
bro, as a 40 yr old punk grandfather from the Midwest , I am so jealous of the life you've lived.
I can't imagine to be able to say like 2x per MONTH, "Hey you going to the strung out show? yeah that new local band, 5 bucks they're playing w that pennywise group and This new band GUTTERMOUTH. Yeah at the dive bar 5 mins away!"
dude I wish..... omfg I'd give a digit for that.
if u don't know what losing a digit means, lol Google it.
Yakuza give digits for making mistakes. it's crazy looking when ppl lose multiples
Strung Out has been my favorite band since I was 6. Was blessed enough to do a soundcheck with them at their last show with the Casualties in LA, will never forget playing Jake's guitar that was a dream come true. Cheers!
That’s awesome!! Right on!
Let’s do it again Christian!🎸🔥
@@jakekiley4264 That would be awesome! I’d love to!
Strung Out without a doubt the best band of the last 3 decades. I’ve seen them over thirty times in Australia, they have a huge and loyal fan base here. Their music has shaped and influenced so many peoples lives including mine. For sure you have your top tier bands as far as popularity goes eg nofx, bad religion, pennywise and Millencolin and I think just in below there sits Lagwagon, strung out and propagandhi! I absolutely hope we get a few more tours down under before they call time, they have given a lifetime of nostalgic memories to celebrate!
I could listen to Blew-Mephisto a billion times over and not get tired of it. Those 5 songs to end element are still just as amazing to listen to as the first time I heard them.
Transmission.Alpha.Delta is just the MOST Unreal AWESOME album! The Speed of The Animal and the Machine takes you on this fun out of control rollercoaster. It's hard to pick an album highlight ... Modern Drugs, Spanish Days and Rebellion come to the top. And the album even wraps up in the killer Westcoasttrendkill.
My recommends for a Per Album Playlist to Kickstart your Strung Out indulgence:
Another Day in Paradise : Ashes
Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues : Somnombulance (pains me to not slip Bring Out Your Dead to the Top :)
Twisted by Design : Deville (I can only pick ONE?)
The Element of Sonic Defiance : Mephisto (I know it's an EP, but you CAN'T miss it!)
An American Paradox : Dig
Exile in Oblivion : Blueprint of the Fall
Blackhawks Over Los Angeles : Party in the Hills (Downtown is oh so close)
Agents of the Underground : Carcrashradio
Transmission.Alpha.Delta : The Animal and the Machine
Songs of Armor and Devotion : White Girls
I own all of these (plus the P & P and Contenders comps and Crossroads EP) and Strung Out is truly the music that can bring me out of a glum day or make a great day awesome! Hard to believe I've been following them for over 2 decades (where'd the time go?).
T.M.A has the best opener and closer of any album i've ever heard
I've loved Strung Out since the first time I saw them live at Warped Tour. They fucking thrash so hard and their technical guitar playing and drumming its hard not to love them. My favorite Strung Out song is Analog. Absolutely love that song. Gives me chills everytime I hear it
I think we've been to every concert they've put on in our area, even while pregnant 3 times. However my favorite was at this little club called Fat Mike's in Jacksonville there was maybe 50 people attending and the band was hanging out in the parking lot, my oldest son was able to come with us. It was an unforgettable experience!
Thank you Laura, the smaller shows have often been my favorites, more free to have fun!🙃
I saw Strung Out at least once back at the beginning of this century in Australia (they were one of a bunch of bands that would tour out there every so often because the skate punk scene still ticked over even after it seemingly died down elsewhere). And I saw them again in London *cough mumble* years ago. Still an amazing live act.
You are absolutely right about their talent with melodies and their technical abilities with guitars.
Watching this I really should go for a deep dive into their stuff again.
They are so good in the punk scene. I think I first saw them in a dive bar in Buffalo playing Teenage Suburban Wasteland and Twisted by Design back to back, but it was so hot the whole band was pouring sweat, like it was a cartoon. One of my favorite shows of all time
Element is my favorite Strung Out release. Love this band. Great video!
🤘🏼🍻
been my favourite band for 25 years, they never let you down. every release distinctly sounds like them yet always feels totally fresh
This is my favorite band. VERY UNDERRATED.
Element of Sonic Defiance is a masterpiece and often overlooked. Peak songwriting and craft. Teenage Wasteland though is right there...that album was a game-changer for me in '96.
Strung Out is one of my favorite bands of all time. Jordan is the best drummer man and all of the guys are super cool and nice. Exile In Oblivion is top 5 albums of all time in my opinion.
I partied with this guy’s back in the day !!! YOOOO SIMI VALLEY ✌️😎✌️
You explaining how the title of Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues came together was the piece of trivia I never knew I needed. Thanks for that. Also f*cking love that album.
I still consider the intro to Virginia Madison to be the best I've heard. And I've been listening to all kinds of punk/metal sub genres for 25 years now. It's just...perfect.
Great history lesson! Makes me nostalgic for their many great shows of the late 90s and early 00s. One of the best things about growing up in So Cal was getting to see these guys dozens of times over the years. Still great of course, and Alpha.Delta is probably my favorite album of all time. Looking forward to seeing them at the Pink Motel in a couple months.
Awesome band! First time I saw them was at a house party in Redlands. Must of been 96. Seen them several other times with Face to Face. I’d say Blackhawks over LA was easily one of the best albums of the 2000’s. Good review
I find myself more and more into the lesser spun stuff as time goes on: Exile, Blackhawks, Agents.
I really really dig Songs Of Armor And Devotion though. There's not a single skip track on that record and I'm not getting tired of any of it no matter how much I listen to it.
really stoked to hear you dig the new one dude!
Great video. I've listened to these guys since the early 90s. Twisted by Design was my anthem as a teenager--album still gives me chills when I listen to it today. I have a vivid memory of seeing them live at the old Trocadaro Theater in Philly in 98 and hearing the opening riff to 'Paper walls'--place went crazy. We met them afterwards and were super cool and humble. Thanks for for making this video and sharing their story. Keep up the good work.
One of my all time favs! I've been following/listening/going to shows since the mid nineties. Can't get enough!
Strung Out are point blank the best punk band to come from the 90's. Everything they have released is amazing. Exile is probably my favorite.
Another Day in Paradise, Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues, Crossroads and Illusions, and Twisted by Design were the albums that kept me going in those difficult teenage years. I may still be able to sing every word.
Same here. I can sing every word on those albums. A band that had a big influence on my life growing up in the 90's.
You did an amazing job on this! Strung Out has been my favorite band of all time for a long time now and I think part of the draw for me actually is that they are still so little known.
Haha! Your comment about them not being your favorite, band but most listened to on Spotify, struck home. I couldn't tell you who my favorite band is, but I can tell you that Spotify thinks Transmission Alpha Delta is the only album I listen to. F*cking love that album.
Nice work on the history of this band. I've been a die hard SO fan for over 25 years. Seen em live about 15 times and met them a bunch. By far my favorite band of all time. I even have a full Strung Out sleeve on my arm 🤘
My opinion, Transmission Alpha Delta is their best album. It's a fucking powerhouse! But truth be told I like anything Strung Out puts out. I'm even a big fan of the acoustic stuff. This band just speaks to me. Always has, always will!
Great video dude! 🤘
First big show my band got was with Strung Out and Diesel Boy in 1996. Met up with them the next year when they were on tour with the Offspring and AFI and hung out with Jordan and Rob for a couple shows. Awesome dudes.
Velvet Alley and Lost Motel have both been more all time favourite songs basically since the first time I heard them. A friend gave me a Fat Wreck compilation back in the day and Ultimate Devotion was on it, Strung Out very quickly became my favourite band after that...
That’s amazing to hear Brendan!
Lost Motel is truly mind blowingly, skin tinglingly amazing.
@@Pogdub Cheers Johnny!🍻
I still love this band and have seen them a dozen+ times, grew up in Las Vegas so they always came thru. The shows were always great. Teenage wasteland, twisted by design and american paradox are my favorites.
Jim in zero down was good too and after moving around the world (military) the last 18 years I've lost the signed CD and it's super hard to find or even download that album.
Hell yeah man Strung Out rules. This dude I worked with at a pizza shop in the 90's introduced me via Twisted By Design and I was hooked.
I think half our original line up worked at pizza shops haha! Cheers Andrew!🍻
Hell yeah dude, SO origin stories are dope. I was getting a tattoo from a dude who had Blackhawks on in the background, and I go 'wtf is that, this is amazing' I was hooked forever after, I'd never heard anything like it at the time. They even gave my love of Pennywise a run for it's money
your fave band is Suicidal Tendencies. mine too, my fave album from Strung out is Exile in Oblivian
Suicide was and is a massive influence!👍🏼
Just gotta say fucken love your videos. Not this one but others have helped me remember bands. Plus just my love of punk and never really having punk friends seeing the love others have for it is great.
Great work, bro!
I was at the show at El Corazon in late 2019 traveling from Australia. Good times.
My all favorite band!
Transmission. Alpha. Delta. Is becoming my favorite album over the years now!
There aren’t enough love hearts on the internet for me to express my appreciation for this video. I love Strung Out so much and this was a beautiful tribute. Thankyou.
Spotify playlist of favs: Literally ever S.O song lol
Cheers man !
Love Strung Out, thanks for doing this video!
Thanks for making these videos. Keep it much. Much appreciated.
I love Strung Out awesome video ! This is the first YT video I have ever seen that mentions Blount. I wore their Trauma record out way back when.
After watching the video, I spotted at least 3 different shows filmed in Montreal! I saw them 17 times in Montreal and 3 other times elsewhere in Quebec since 1996 and I filmed 11 shows of them! They are the best in concert!
Right on dude!!
i love "it aint over yet" by zero down.
my fav strung out record: american paradox
A Wilhelm Scream and Strung Out fave bands ever!
Big fan of Strung out, been fortunate enough to see them live twice, put on an awesome show.
thanks for the video.
Any plans on doing a video horror punk? I've been a part of that scene for at least a decade now and while I do love that it maintains the old underground D.I.Y. aspect of punk rock, there are bands that definitely deserve more attention like Blitzkid, Calabrese, Mister Monster (RIP J-Sin) and Cancerslug.
Definitely!! Coming this October!
I’m a huge Blitzkid fan. I guess you could say I like them even more than the Misfits
@@thepunkhistorian6397 I might agree with you. I mean, Danzig Misfits will always reign supreme for me especially now that Graves outed himself as a raging proud boy (and yes, I'm very sure Glenn's something of a right winger too but at least he's smart enough to keep his mouth shut) but Blitzkid definitely has the better musicianship. They basically take the old Misfits formula and throw in some Bad Religion, Green Day, Pennywise and various other 90s punk bands.
Awesome fucking video! Strung Out is and will always be my favorite punk band of all time, being from Pittsburgh and always going to their shows when they came thru always seemed like we made up half the crowd 😂 those are some of the greatest memories of my childhood, I still get chills every time I hear Matchbook, fuckin miss those days.
How much I would have died for all of this footage and story in ‘96 and ‘97 when ADIP and STWB was my fav albums. I used to just look at the CD liner notes and guess who these guys were. Their song writing was and is amazing. Twisted By Design is a master piece….amazing video, thanks man
This is great! I’m from Simi and Jason was one of my best friends in high school.
Fan since the early 90s and as far as I spot on! This was really good ....Super crazy but that's my big fat head right in front of you w the glasses on at El Corzon show. That was a fun night and also my last show before Covid. Also my son's 1st show at the time. Awesome job w the video. Cheers 🍻
Strung Out is and always has been one of my favorite bands of all times, all of their albums and eras hit with me. Twisted by design changed my life, but so did exile in oblivion. Matchbook is such an amazing AMAZING song.
It’s awesome having someone on CZcams talking about these underrated bands in the genre. 10 years ago when I first started getting into pink, there wasn’t really anyone making videos, it was essentially a wasteland! Thanks for discussing one of my favorite bands! As someone who love prog and punk, it’s certainly refreshing to hear both style being done so well!!! 👍
YES YES YES!!! One of my all time fav bands! Can't wait to watch this.
Twisted is still my favourite album and they've not managed to top it since but I still absolutely love quite a few of their albums. Implants are fucking BANGING too.
They’ve been my favorite band since I heard Support Your Troops on the Punk Sucks comp. I’ve seen them more than any other band
Another superb video
1994 was an incredible year for skate punk and punk in general… Punk in Drublic, Stranger than Fiction, Let’s Go, Smash, Another Day in Paradise…
My favorite band since 1998 \m/ . Thanks for the vid man!
Enjoyed this video thanks for making it! Strung out has been one of my favorite bands since the Exile era as that is one of my favorites by any band. I also frequently enjoy the older and newer albums as well. I'm not a huge skate punk fan as I prefer early to mid 2000s metalcore/melodic death metal (Unearth, Darkest hour, Lamb of God, etc) but I've always enjoyed Strung Out's guitar leads, songwriting and catchy choruses. Anyways I wanted to stop by just to let you know I appreciate the video as strung out is criminally underrated imo!
Gnarly job bro! Could you do videos about pennywise,MXPX, Face to Face, Frenzal Rhomb, Lagwagon, Rufio, The Vandals, and No Use For a Name? 🙇🏾♂️🙏🏿
I’ve seen SO more than 20 times. Used to have a huge Astrolux on my car. Now I just have an astrolux on my suitcase that I bring to work as an airline pilot. I still remember writing string out in high school and getting a response from Jordan and a bunch of stickers. I realize bands grow and change but I miss Jordan on the drums. Exile and tad were my favorites followed closely by twisted and suburban
For 23 years I've had the strung out atom tattooed on my neck, I've Never regretted it to this day!
Another great vid and glad you've added the source tags on screen! Keep killing it.
Even said that before I saw you used our Implants footage!! Cheers.
Hahaha I started doing that after y’all left a comment on my skate punk video! Thanks!
@@thepunkhistorian6397 rad and congrats on the Strung Out share on FB
This band is extremely cool. I remember getting into them in the earlier 2000s and picking up Twisted by Design and loving it. Exile in Oblivion has to be my favorite. It just sounded so fresh and interesting with the punk/metal hybrid there. I still get so psyched when I play that album. I sometimes bump their newer stuff on youtube it definitely sounds good and has some great songs, I guess I wish I spent more time getting into all their music as I really only know the Strung out from 1996-2004 really well. I love that story about how they got onto Fat Wreck. I wish this video was longer as I would have liked to have heard more about them but this was still a good mini documentary.
Strung Out and Casutalties in Seattle was my last show before covid too man! I am more of a Strung Out fan, but I was especially blown away by the Casualties that night. Been missing the mosh pit since the pandemic though, but at least the last show I got was dope!
Year before Strung Out played the Showbox and was one of my favorite all time live performances by any band. (they also played "twisted by design" straight through which was super fun as I was obsessed with that cd in highschool)
Maybe my favorite band.... Top 3 at least.
I remember seeing Strung Out with Straight Faced and Assorted Jellybeans in the late 90's. One of the few vivid memory I have of that show was that Jim Cherry had a big sticker of a cow on his bass. I still have and wear the hoodie I bought at that show.
Suburban teenage is one of my all time favorite records ...
Man her name in blood still gives me goosebumps. I remember hearing it in highschool for the first time in the 2000s!
Love Strung Out. Wish they’d play more shows in Canada
These guys really are talented, they're definitely one of my favorite bands. I have seen them since the mid 90s more times than I can remember, and never once was I disappointed, they never half ass anything. My first tattoo was the astrolux. As a drummer I hated to see Jordan go, but he new dude can hold it down. I can't wait to see them again.
American Paradox was a game changer for me.
Listened to all their stuff coming up thru 90's, but that one sealed the deal as my fav band
They continue to be amazing.
Fav song? too many, I really like Never Speak Again though
Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues is my #1 album of all time. Crazy enough, TAD is #2...so many years apart and yet they still keep killing it.
Well done ..... twisted by design will always stand above the rest but they have jams on all their albums
Omg Strung Out and The Casualties is a dream line up for me
Dude it was fuckin awesome!!
Was such a great tour! You catch any shows?

I used to listen to live in a dive on repeat while delivering pizzas one summer. Best version of bark at the moon out there.
Hell yeah dude. I have many memories of listening to strung out while working at a pizza place as well
Hey man, your Band is fucking awesome!
YOOOOO Thanks!!!
Any record or just bridge city Sessions? I cant found it
@@nanianflagia nothing recorded yet, we’re working on it though! I’ll definitely be talking about it on here soon 😂😂
I'd heard a few of their songs and thought they were ok. But I was never all that into em. Then I saw em at a show that I was at to see another band and was blown away at how great they were live, hooked ever since.
One of the best bands ever
I dare to say American Paradox is their most experimental album made yet. You got a few songs like Unkoil or Cemetery that really sticks out from all the rest of their songs. I won't defend it's their best but it definitely has its charm.
For those of you who want to know, I'm a big fan of Twisted by Design.
Always glad to see Strung Out fans who agree that STWB is their best album. Great vid dude!
Cheers!
I saw them with Bad Religion in 98', that show made me a strung out fan
Twisted By Design is one of my favourite albums ever (apart from Ice Burn...definitely a skip for me) and it's aged very very well. Their newer stuff has kinda passed me by though, i definitely preferred the skate punk sound to the more metal-ly sounding stuff, despite being a massive metal fan myself (fucking Gojira \m/)
Interesting
these guys are the soundtrack of my life. best band ever!!!
When I was younger I wasn't really into bands on Fat Wreck, so I didn't listen to Strung Out. Thanks for this video I will go listen to some of their music.
After listening to a few songs from each album I think I like Another Day in Paradise. I like how short and fast they were. Sounds like they did keep faster stuff in their later albums but I am not into poppier or longer stuff. The singers vocals aren't bad but I am not super into how he sings. I might buy a copy of Another Day though.
always loved this band! ROTTEN APPLE is prob my fav
I love Strung Out's music, they remind me of S.T. My favourite album is An American Paradox
Man I think I had exile in oblivion in CD player for like a year straight. Good shit, I always thought that story about carpeting fat mike's apartment was funny af.
When I heard cult of the subterranean when I was like 13 I was hooked on
Strung out
When i created my band (ANONIMATO pr) one of the biggest influence was Strung out, they are nowhere near my favorite band list but their style (skate Punk with metal elements) its a great canvas to get inspired. Great video, see you next week.
Cheers! That’s awesome man! Yeah totally agree! Doesn’t get much better than Metal + melodic skate punk
Great to hear Robert!
FAVS & my early drumming influence.
I listen recently to strong Out to teenager wasteland, and the twisted and the first album 🙂 strong Out is my new favorite bands 😊
Hell yeah !
Seriously love strungout and love pulley.
