    I watched an interview with slash a few months back where they asked if he thinks about all the sixths and thirds stuff when he plays and his answer I found interesting and encouraging too was that he just plays what sounds good to him he doesn’t worry so much about being technical as he’s more worried about what sounds good! Just found that interesting as Robert goes all guitar theory on his licks lol

    • @pmcate2
      @pmcate2 Před 3 lety +23

      Be careful. People who say this are still actually doing theory in their head. (Meaning they more or less are able to hear a musical idea in their head and are able to realize it on their instrument). What they really mean to say is that they never cared to learn how the theory in their head matches up with the agreed upon standard of names and terms given to those musical concepts. The people who criticize learning theory don't get that the names and terms are just for communication convenience. They aren't the essence of theory. The essence is being able to know to play 'that' note over 'that' chord change, etc., which slash is probably able to do to a certain degree.

      I think what he meant was that he breaks the rules (as he knows them-and we all operate on bits and pieces of whatever our current understanding is) when it sounds right. But don’t get too excited about being able to randomly pick notes, all good players have a strong set of rules they follow to sound that good. When you know the rules so well that you can break them and still sound good...you’re probably moving past intermediate level.

  • @TristanJCumpole
    @TristanJCumpole Před 2 lety +2

    The way I look at it is that you can make a major or minor scale sound as light or dark as you want depending on how you place your accents, imply a resolving tonal centre and bias it with non-chord tones as passing notes. A major scale can be twisted out of all recognition pretty easily, even if you're only playing the chord tones in the right places by the accent. Add in that Slash plays a LOT of hammer-on/pull-off triplets and the placement of the notes becomes even more complex. An exercise that I used for a while was a straight half or quarter time beat with a major/Ionian or natural minor/Aeolian over the top. Hit the "right" notes on the beat and add in a mixture off the beat. It's amazing how much you can get away with here even if you only add in one non-chord tone. That's just me anyway. Great lesson man!

    Im a guitar teacher and been teaching since i was 27 and im now 31 and i wrote my own lesson book in like a work book/ text book style that has lesson plans and it goes along qith the studwnts lessons and has evergthjng tabbed out sp they hace it to practice at home. And a few of the simple but spicy sounding penetonjc scale licks i use to teach the scales i call it the slash notes or the slash penetonic scale cause alot of my students love slash as thier influence likehe was mine when i was a kid and it teaches them how to solo and imlrovise alot faster.

    This might be one of your best ones yet, on how to sprinkle a little fairy dust into those pentatonics and bringing them to life.

    The sharp 3rd is just a chromatic passing tone, so no big deal. But what interests me more is that he is landing on a flat 7th. I don’t know how to explain why that works using my understanding of music theory. If we were in a major scale then I would explain the flat 7th as a “mixolydian flavor”, but we’re in Minor, so...huh. And it’s not pulled from the harmonic minor scale, because that has a raised 7th, not a lowered 7th.

    another hack I heard from Michael Angelo, if I start on this note and end on this note, it doesn't matter what I play in between because that's my key. Can't use it everywhere but it comes in handy if you just want to let it fly. Also there's a black spot at the end of the video where everything cuts out.

    Slash single handedly made the less Paul desirable again. Probably made more memorable solos than any other guitarist

    I like your slash inspired lick, but i think it sounds more good if you try to descend the lick, like high to low cause mostly slash play fast only in descending
