Gentleman Quiz: gentl.mn/quiz-gentleman-type1
00:00 Neopolitan Style Introduction
In menswear today, Neapolitan style is famed for its effortless sprezzatura and handwork, lightweight, airy fabrics, and casualness. At places like Pitti Uomo, it’s closely associated with dandies and flamboyant gentlemen. Typically, it features bold statements and colors; and it’s just the reminiscence of fun and Southern Italy.
02:13 Why Does Neoolitan Style Matter?
It has gotten quite famous. It is cited many times in brochures, online, when people talk about things, and so, as someone interested in classic menswear, it’s really important to understand.
03:55 The History of Neopolitan Style
In 1861, Naples joined the Kingdom of Italy, which, of course, today is a republic. While the area around Naples used to be well-known for its agricultural impact, it also developed to be a hub for clothing.
The late-19th and early-20th centuries, Naples was known to produce high-quality garments. The clothes produced followed styles of other nations; had influences from Vienna, from England, and from France.
07:30 General Hallmarks of Neopolitan Style
Typically, Neapolitan style means bolder colors. The fabrics are certainly open weave. So, while a British blazer is maybe made of a surge fabric, the traditional Neapolitan will be made of a hopsack.
Neapolitan tailoring is not about accuracy - it’s more about comfort, it’s about the visible handwork, and something that is stylistically and aesthetically pleasing.
12:38 Neopolitan Clothing: Jackets
16:54 Outerwear
17:30 Trousers
19:05 Shirts
20:11 Shoes
21:24 Accessories
So, in conclusion, I hope we have shown that we’re not o’ guappo ‘e cartone - meaning “a braggart made of cardboard” - when it comes to Neapolitan style.

I have to say, I really appreciate all the B-roll, illustrations, and photos you guys edit to the videos. It really helps me understand and contextualize all the vocabulary of classical menswear. And, of course, it's visually pleasing and inspiring to see all these well-dressed men and how they express themselves through style.
Thanks for your kind words! Glad to know we're hitting the mark for you 🙂
The diffrent of Milanese,Florentine and Neapolitan style would be an interesting topic.
Can you talk about other mainland European style from countries like Germany and Netherlands and other countries in that region
That would be interesting
I live in the netherlands i wonder what style? Whoever is would probably be inspired by the british or italian style!
German style is so... boring... jkjk
Lived in both countries..if anything we can make a episode about the lack of style in these countries.
There's a pretty distinct style of shoe local to Austria and Hungary, especially Vienna and Budapest. Very round and prominent toe. Vass make a very Austro-Hungarian shoe they call the Budapester. Ludwig Reiter would be the Viennese shoemaker I know of, they make the same styles
My best man was native to Naples, he was always a man of style and great hospitality.
Thanks for your videos and research/history of Neapolitan style. A style that I’ve come to appreciate & love wearing.
I’m also open to other styles as well, so any European style videos are welcomed. 😃🤙🏾
Great video. I’m a Scot who used to live in Naples. I still go back regularly and get all my clothes there. Bespoke suits are so accessible and reasonable. It’s very difficult to find a bad tailor.
Any recs for some good places that don’t break the bank?
There are a few places just outside Naples in a place called Grumo Nevano. I’d recommend Scarano Giovanni in particular.
Thanks!
What shops would you recommend pls ❤️👍🏴thanks Charlie
Sorry I’ve just seen your messages,I’ll look them up thanks ❤️👍🏴

I have a visit with Rubinacci in their Milan store and am excited to experience my first true Italian suit. This video could not have been more timely for me. I'm hoping for a suit that can be worn in warmer/milder weather here in Northern California as well as Italy.
You could not have gone to a better place for that function! I'm excited for you! Congrats on that opportunity!
I live in the American South and Italian suits are a godsend!
So? Any feedback for us? Has it been a nice experience?
@@tommasovasta8323 my. Is it will be in late June with my first fitting in July so it will be a while before I can make any judgment
Outstanding video. Very detailed explanations and visual examples. Thank you.
It sucks that my father doesn't appreciate my linen shirts but man they're a lifesaver 💯
Great video. I seem to remember that you come from a colder climate, but you seem to appreciate the soft, comfortable lines of Neapolitan attire. And nobody better to explain this wonderful style that Raphael!
My local tailor is from Italy and I have to argue/negotiate with him to not cut my jacket lengths crazy short, i.e. close to the wrist 😂. He hates pleats too.
I have the exact same problem with the no-show socks. I can't wait to see what you guys come up with.
Great video!
YOU GUYS ACTUALLY DID IT LETS GOOOOOO!
That distinguish gentleman visible in the photos at 0:54 and 1:10 is actually a Pole, his name is Jan Adamski and he is one of the best authorities in the field of classic menswear in Poland. In the 1:16 on the left side there is another Pole - Albert Borowiecki. It's funny to see them being identified as Naples men. :D
Great stuff
Thanks for all the help with character design
Great video gents, thank you - particularly in love with the bow tie at 17:17.
Also great to hear you're looking at no-show socks - I wear them all the time, but if I don't put my toe through them after three wears, they sag very quickly.
Just in time for my Naples trip
Great video! And I’ll be waiting on those no show socks, I could really use them
Looks like a good suit for Australia due to the climate.
properly informative! thank you.
I'm fairly new to Gentleman's Gazette...Raphael, your vids are very informative AND entertaining sir, that's rare on CZcams 👍
Glad to have you with us! Thank you for your support 🥂
Neapolitan men like to be Noticed and tend to be a bit of the showman ... The clothes reflect it. And they are mostly geared to warmer weather .. they also borrow some american elements, as there are a lot of immigrants here in US ..
For even more sprezzatura, you can misalign shirt buttons, loose a cufflink, and wear two different shoes.
Gentlemans Gazette, Love your channel for the well-dressed man! Sadly, I hardly see men, where I live in New Jersey, wear Double breasted suits anymore. Unless I go to next door to New York City in Manhattan. Where I am not alone wearing my nice double-breasted suits. Thanks for the upload! ☺

What fun! Now, my buttons will be sewn on with the chicken foot stitch, and my handworked top stitching will be puckered.
As a Brit, here is my take on youth British style (London mainly, 16-mid 20s): sports wear, usually black or grey, scruffy, slobbish, stolen or knocked off North Face/Moncler/Canada Goose jackets, or a Nike jacket, Nike trainers (not that there is anything wrong with having comfortable footwear such as Nike). Older guys are better: jeans with a shirt and jumper, or chinos with shirts and a jumper. I think it is British youth who are letting our nation down (and in sooooo many ways!). However, on the whole there is still a level of British elegance (think Royal men), although we are some way from Italian men.
Upper middle class men and above are better dressed.
fellow brit here and I 100% agree
I noticed and I agree.
Having worked in Bicester Village for a while I can say you're right.
Almost everyone in England is dressed shabby these days.
When you actually see someone who has made an effort they stand out.
I am making more of an effort lately, you get all sorts of comments like have you been to court or a wedding or a job interview or are you now a lawyer? But these comments come from people who have had the same shabby style for well over 20 years, they do not have the nutts to try something different or they just think wearing wornout dirty nikes busted jeans & a hoody 24/7 is fine?
Greetings from Napoli!
Sven, you look always handsome and stylish!
I enjoy watching men dressed in Neapolitan style, very Jonny Deep. 🤭 I would like to mention a couple of brands from the Napoli area, ties by E.Marinella, and shoes by A. Scafora. Long ago near Caserta, they used to produce silk.
Very excellent. I'm travelling to Campania in the summer and hope to pick an item up around Naples :-)
Have a look at Rubinacci's boutique in Palazzo Cellamare or at Eddy Monetti at via Filangieri.
P.S.: Personal advise: a lot of things to see in Naples and sourrandings but avoid putting jewellery or luxury watches on because it's dangerous.
@@tommasovasta8323 Thanks a lot! I'll check those places out. I don't have flash jewellery/Rolex watches etc - just some decent tweed and my wits about me....hopefully I'll avoid the danger.
Appreciate :-)

By the way, nothing to be worried. Just common sense. Naples is a particular kind of city. Someone likes it, someone else no. You have just to follow the same rules you follow visiting Rio, New York, Paris or other crowded cities where the gap between rich and poor is quite significant.
Say that, the city is a "tailoring gem" for men. Plenty of ateliers hidden in old palaces...
@@tommasovasta8323 ...thanks for this; maybe I'll ditch my tweed for something fresco and Neapolitan...

An excellent presentation. The is my first view of a full length video of yours. Well done. This will supplement my views of the Gentleman’s Gazette channel. As an aside I own a bespoke suit. Being obese I thought of it as a necessity back then. The facility was in downtown Chicago. It’s a marino wool and llama blended shell. A year round weight of course. It is the most common outfit I have. 45 places to measure me on order to got the proper look. They guaranteed no

I must say since I focused on this type of style within my waredrobe, I find women notice me more. They can't quite figure it out. But it works! Expensive but works

why does neapolitan mens style matter?
The Neapolitan men's style matters for several reasons. Firstly, it represents a rich cultural heritage that has been passed down from generation to generation. The style is deeply rooted in the history and traditions of Naples, and it reflects the city's unique blend of sophistication and understated elegance.
Secondly, Neapolitan men's style is highly respected and admired in the fashion industry for its quality and craftsmanship. The tailors and artisans of Naples are renowned for their attention to detail and their ability to create bespoke garments that fit perfectly and last a lifetime.
Finally, Neapolitan men's style matters because it embodies a sense of individuality and self-expression. The style is not about following trends or conforming to a certain look, but rather about expressing one's own personal style in a way that is elegant, refined, and authentic.
Overall, Neapolitan men's style matters because it represents a unique blend of tradition, quality, and individuality that is highly valued in the world of fashion and beyond.
I would buy a dozen of those no show socks if they work. I hate trying to match different brands of no show socks with different shoes. I wear a 9.5. US and need to buy women no show socks, just so they stay on half the time.
Con ganas de verlo una y otra vez. Spanish please.
Enjoyable
Imagine the scene, in Glasgow, an Asian sub-continent owner of an Italian suit shop who obviously favoured the Roma style and in I walk wearing a Neapolitan sprezzatura (it was hot, even in Glasgow - the icicles was melting), the discussion went downhill fairly quickly. Insults were swiftly exchanged with reference to me being dressed like a clown (Punchinello) and him being dressed as a gangster (Don Corleone). Needless to say I did not buy anything .... but it was an amusing half hour.
😂
Sounds like 2 non-italians trying to keep it 'Bella Italia' real 😂😂😂
Sort of like when a Brit , a German , a Frog and a Spaniard try to outdo each other in imitating / arguing their favorite Brazilian football player 😂😂😂

Sprezzatura...look at me for I have my button undone, hu hu. I took several minutes to intentionally look as If I don't care.
The only time I'm Sprezzatura is when I forgott to zip my trousers after using the toilette😂.
Just joking nice Video. Machst das immer sehr gut Rafael👍
There is a very big difference between Neapolitan style and Northern Italian style and that not just in Garments
11:41, I felt Preston looked stylish. Usually I feel like his clothes fit a bit off on him.
For some reason it really throws me off seeing a suit with peak lapels and the shirt being half unbuttoned 😅

Neapolitan is not just Pizza 🍕 and Ice Cream 🍧🍨, by the way in Italy 🇮🇹 not everyone dresses like this.
Miami Vice fashion. Was this considered Neapolitan style or not? If not, what is the difference?
Does Sicily have its own style
👏👍👔
An extra long tie passed the belt line is actually a signature of Neapolitan style. Like, longer than Trump’s.
👍👔
I’ve heard some of Neapolitan taylors there say they had the advantage of having a royal court in their city to help their industry get going. You can’t go see a king looking like a bum. Maybe the same in London. King Charles isn’t a sweatpants kind of guy.
I have to admit that I'm not a fan of the (modern version) Neopolitan style...
I DO like the "Devil may care" aspect of style, ala Gary Cooper... But this particular Italian style falls just short of sloppy to me.
The lines of the clothing are too "soft" for my taste and I'd never be caught dead without wearing socks, so to me, wearing those "footie things" is only inches away from going sockless.
Of course, to each their own.
Cheers, Gents

What's the difference between French, German and Eastern European suits?
@@gregory2611
The "short course" is:
French- incredibly finely tailored, on the trim side, but nowhere near "tight".
German - Incredible attention to detail, like pinstripes that match up PERFECTLY at seams, etc... A bit drapier than the English style.
Eastern European - well made and sturdy, heavier cloth. Boxier than the English and German style.
But that's just the short course, of course 😁
I so wish you could do something on women’s clothing…even only once. Maybe comparing quality or something. My grandparents come from Naples. Style is so important.
John Gotti dressed as a Neapolitan as well back in New York.
The pronunciation of the Italian names were good, but the sentences in Neapolitan dialect were comically bad 😂😂
To be fair , even his English is quite funny when pay close attention to his 'Germanness' 😂
Now why didn’t he mention Georgio Armani?
I wish he had.
I have been to Naples. The average man on the street is not particularly well dressed....just T shirts and jeans. You show examples of men from Milan.
Unfortunately nowadays not many people wear suits daily. It's true, in Milan there's a higher chance to see people in suits, just because it's the capital of finance.
That’s true! I think the term refers more to the fact that most high level tailors are traditionally either from Naples or from Abruzzo. But Rome and Milan are definitely the city with most suited up men. Rome has the majority of lawyers and all the politicians. Milan has the most businessman and high end jobs.
That climate change comment was a little "gratuit".
“Climate change” 🤪

With all due respect for Italians, but most Italian trends are too flashy and only good for Italy (not even for Greece.) With very few exceptions, those trends look a bit tacky out of there and only good for reinforcing stereotypes.
