I genuinely believe that children should be learning about racism and how to combat it, as long as they don’t do what the proud family did
Forreal ‼ The reboot dropped the ball big time
Lolol yes! Nobody told me L&P was rebooted as urban horror
Not to be ashamed of their race but to learn the mistakes their ancestors did to other races and what they should not do as a race in the future. That their race shouldn’t be discriminatory towards people different from them or that they deserve more because they believe they’re superior.
And it also teach everyone that one single race, gender, religion etc. is not superior to everyone else.
Proud family was fine
@Not the reboot imo
it's so wild to me when people ask "why did you put (topic) into a kid's cartoon?!" because we need to teach children to not be racist...tf you mean why?🤔
Exactly ‼ They want all cartoons to be full of ABC tutorials or goofy episodes
@@TonyTurner and thats exactly how you end up with a generation full of entitled, hateful children who grow up to be uneducated, narcissistic adults 🙃 smdh
They’re the same fools who say white kids are gonna “feel bad for being white”
No, they’re gonna feel bad that people abused other humans for something as small as their skin color.
I’m very pale from genetic issues, you wouldn’t be able to tell I have Native American blood, but I choose to claim I’m white because I won’t have the experiences that visually native/more native people have every day of their lives. That being said, I’ve never had some resentment/hatred towards myself for looking like a colonizer because I wasn’t the one who did all that. I despise the people of the past for what they did, and what still happens to minorities to this day. I want to be apart of helping everyone achieve real equality while still holding my ancestors accountable for what they did/continue to do.
No we don’t need to teach kids not to be racist. Children already aren’t racist. Kids don’t become racist until someone in their life or the media puts those ideas in their heads.
kids present colorism as early as the toddler stage. that's exactly why we have to teach kids against it, because the media constantly bombards them with bigotry, and if they are not taught to spot racism they will not be able to avoid it.@@user-tz5vt9pc2j
I would also say, the 2003 teen titans did a very good job tackling racism and prejudice towards others especially with the moments between starfire and cyborg. I remember the episode being highly praised growing up as a kid in the 00's and it's well deserved still until this day.
Starfire: Do you know what it's like to discriminated against because you are different.
Cyborg: of course I do I'm half robot
I love how they handle the situation and gave out a real lesson of understanding and finding those who can accept you when even if you doubt yourself
This is why I miss Principal Haney. He would’ve never let this happen.
What happened to him? VA pass away or somethin?
@christiankallio8586 Yes
Uhhh he let it happened for years ever since 1996 it’s finally now being addressed I feel this situation in this episode was retconned
Brain is black since he mention he was African american and celebrated Kwanzaa.
As for Ms. McGrady not getting extra help. My friend is a teacher. She always told that many times janitors, lunch ladies, and bus drivers do get mistreated or ignored by other staff members who are higher up and students. Since they dont see their job as important or difficult. U see it that episode the principal didnt saw the problem of Ms. McGrady bc she was just the lunchlady and probably already saw it as an easy job since she only has to service lunch once to the student while compare to her, she has to run the school or other teacher who are always on the clock.
I can attest to that.
I work custodial and some of the teachers are so nice and caring and some of them are stuck up and think they are above everyone because of their education. I'm going to be making a career change in the future, though.
its like they say an army marches on its stomach...
Arthur was actually one of my favourite shows growing.
Mine too‼
@@TonyTurner I find it overrated but that's just me
@@christiankallio8586 The first 4 seasons and some of 5 are genuinely fantastic. After that the show kind of became meh
8:06 My mum did this for 3 kids who came from a rough background during her time as a teacher. Before class started in the morning, she’d give them each a bowl of cereal 🥣 (with FULL cream milk 🥛) cos she knew these kids never ate before they came to school (& honestly their figures showed it). She paid for the milk & cereal out of her own pocket & it’s one of the things I respect her for most as someone who taught in schools for over 40 years & as my mum.
This was incredibly cool to hear about. I always really appreciated it when kids shows actually addressed stuff like this, instead of trying to hide it. Because, like you said, they have to deal with it too. It's not going to wait until they're "old enough ." Whenever that is.
The real weird thing about Arthur tackling racism is the fact that Arthur’s characters are animals, so we got things like Arthur wearing a mask of another animal and it’s like “is this racist?” XD
Of course there’s also the issue people have pointed out that, like if a character is wearing headphones, the speakers aren’t where their ears on, they’re on the sides of their heads where human ears are.
It doesn’t ruin anything of course, but it makes you wonder afterwards.
The fact that they're animals literally has no bearing on the message whatever. That's a Mr. Enter argument and it's dumb.
@@georgemiser I don't think that is what the original comment was trying to say. The message still works just fine and I think kids will take away the correct things from it. But for the adults watching with their kids, exploring racism with cartoon animals does bring up the question of what racism even looks like in cartoon animal world. It's just an interesting question, not a criticism of the worldbuilding of a show that neither has any nor needs it to properly entertain and teach kids.
Fritz the Cat also tackled racism. The crows were black and everyone else was labeled as white. Although, Fritz the Cat isn't a kid's movie, it's more of an adult movie.@@maxixe3143

I recently rewatched the entire series (really 😂) Francine is Jewish, like someone else said Brain is suppose to be black from the context clues. Marc Brown did say that the characters don’t have a race per-say but I love how diverse Arthur was even from the first season. Talking about cancer, adoption, food allergies, etc. but making it so that a child can understand. I watched Arthur up until middle school. Great show I even enjoyed watching it again as an adult in her 20s
@mysourpiano Francine *Frenski* is very much established to be an ashkenazi jew...
Yeah they left the part out where if the Chinese girl didn’t get adopted they would’ve tossed her in a river
I think it's very important children learn about subjects like racism and being anti racist in age appropriate contexts. The people getting pissed at stuff like what they did in Arthur don't seem to be too bothered by children actually experiencing racism and discrimination; yet, learning about systematic racism and how not to be racist isn't "appropriate".
Right ‼ I believe that every cartoon doesn't have to be only wild and goofy episodes. Some substance is needed
Have you ever watched Static Shock? I know that there is a fair amount of coverage on this episode, but the episode Sons of Fathers deals with racism and breaking generational racism
Definitely doing that one at some point ‼
I think Tony turner did a video on one of the static shock episode
@@ianhardy9375 He did! He did it a month or two after this video I believe
i was hesitant from the first clip you played bc some people online tend to weaponize racism nowadays. but the context of the episode whipped me around real quick. this was a great Arthur episode and it was handled very well. (tho im biased against the newer animation lol)
I love Arthur. I remember the episode when muffy had to spend time with Francine and she didn’t understand class, and she well off and Francine is poor
That one was such a good episode! The way Francine was so done with Muffy but they still stayed friends at the end 😅
Loved this show growing up. I remember laying the games on the PBS kids website as well as reading the books
I used to love the Arthur PBS games. I even had the game for Playstation 1 ‼🔥
they have the extra budget for food because sadly the same supplier for school lunches also supplies school food. this food is not only unhealthy but is much cheaper than actually hiring help.
I remember that John Lewis episode 😂😂 I watched it maybe back in 2020
Crazy fact: Steven Crowder was one of the early voice actors for the Brain on this show. Which makes his racism towards black agricultural workers even worse.
Crowder isn’t racist. Not everyone who’s not as liberal as Bernie Sanders is racist.
Who cares
Citation please?
1:26 That’s what made it weird seeing Arthur & Francine have a pet dog 🐶 & cat 🐱 respectively when there are anthropomorphic dog characters like Binky & Prunella & cat characters like Sue Ellen & Jenna 🤨
It's like Mickey Mouse having a pet dog.
@@isobelmiller7464whilst also being friends with Goofy.
@@princesspikachu3915 Exactly
humans have pet monkeys and apes, our closest "cousin" is the chimp, i think thats the idea here with anthros having pets.
Something I think is kinda ironic is that The Brain (Allan Powers) is one of the few characters who is confirmed to be African American, he says it in the Christmas episode, but he's a Bear. Bears are not common in Africa.
See that's the thing. I think probably because the common bear is brown, it made more sense for him to be a "black" character so to speak.
@@TonyTurner en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlas_bear There were bears in Africa, I just found out about this species of bear. It became extinct because of overhunting, zoos and the invention of the firearm.
Normally kids should not be exposed to it without understanding or exhibit those things themselves or seeing somebody getting treated, the key point is how to deal with the situation and learn to combat it but not by themselves but by telling a parent or a responsible adult who has experience
9:00 oh now the decide to finally address the fact that Mrs Macgrady was the only lunch lady in the whole school after all of these years seriously?
Forreal ‼
I prefer the anti racism lessons as an allegory like the Sneeches. It seems more effective if the audience isn't just spoonfed but I'm a 20s adult in shock they still make new Arthur. Static Shock did this extremely well but the bluntness worked because it was humans rather than animals.
Arthur ended. It was canceled and aired its final episode back in 2022.
That last episode with the flash forward scene was kinda bad.
I really enjoy your intro jingle. Is that from a song or is it custom made? Very curious!
i think it’s from solange’s song t.o.n.y.
@@agluv7360 yep, I love that song
T.O.N.Y by Solange 🔥
I grew up in the 1990s (born in 1989) and I remember shows (both animated and live action) would have an episode that tackled a serious issue. I never felt I was too young to be exposed to this topic. I remember That's So Raven dealing with an episode on racism, Sister Sister tackled sexism and had an episode where Tamara had a dream where she met famous black historical figures.
15:17 you actually met John Lewis? What did he say to you?
Yes ‼ He shook all of our hands and then talked to us about his times with Martin Luther King Jr.
You should do the teen titans episode where they talk about racism
Gonna look into that one 👀
That’s a good one
If you're talking about the episode Troq, then yes where Starfire is deem unworthy to a full of himself space cadet who insults Starfire in terms of her people and the titan members were not putting up this by dismissing him after the mission, not wanting to working with those who put down others based on their kind
How did they manage to keep this show running for decades, but none of the others?
I'm thinking because it always got the proper funding it needed. They could've honestly still kept the show going today but most of the producers got tired of making full episodes
Because of contributions to PBS Kids "from viewers like you".... 😂😂😂
Thank you
Haven’t started the video yet and I already like it!
Thank You ‼🔥
You can do some reaserch about the character Franklin in Peanuts. I know It's not a cartoon but I know that people wrote to Schultz many complains bc Franklin was black. Also there's a movie coming out on apple tv about Franklin so...
Everyone else probably doesn't see it this way but I feel as soon as John Lewis left at the end of the day Miss Tingly Went back on her word. Her tone Just felt so fake to me. I know it's just a cartoon But I wish they had seen of The new worker being hired
Agree. I actually wanted to see Mrs.McGrady get the help
Did Steven Crowder play Brain in this episode?
Love Arthur growing up hey tony can u talk about what u think of the casting of the new mj biopic..
Pretty soon ‼
Kids shows used to treat kids like they were intelligent and capable of certain levels of complex thought and would deal with serious topics. Today, kids yend to treat them like they're idiots and incapable of thinking beyond the surface.
How do we know which ones were black?
Hey tony
Hey ‼🙋🏾♂️
