as a non-american black/arab woman i always thought it was weird that aaliyah and jet li’s characters never kissed. mind you, i was her age. from an outside perspective, i never realized that the relations between black and asian people were that complex at the time, despite following the la riots and the news of the horrific killing of latasha. it’s interesting how racism and hate crimes increase after historical events, like i experienced a lot more anti-arab xenophobia at the height of and post-9/11. prior to that, the hate was a lot more directed at me being black. interesting discussion, i enjoyed your incorporation of history and pop culture, great vid!

As a Southeast Asian (Filipino to be specific,) I find it sad that we have racism against each other, and for it to have gone on as long as it has. Although, I’m also Canadian. So, I’ll have to look into if these groups have had tension in that aspect.

I'm a black American man and my wife of many years is Asian Filipina. I have never (or she has never - as far as I know) faced any racism from any black people though she sometimes gets odd looks. And I have had one leg in the Filipino community a long time now with no problem, even in the Philippines - with her family, friends - everyone I meet/met. Our Blasian daughters are also well accepted in that community. I know every has their own experiences but if you treat everyone the way you would like to be treated outcomes can be favorable. peace.

I teach a group of students that are all Korean, and we recently read a biography in class about a black female women's rights and african-american rights activist who escaped from slavery in the 1800s
These kids are from 3rd-5th grade because it's an outside of school learning program, but I was surprised at how horridly they were talking ab the black woman in the story. Saying things like how ugly she was on the cover of the book (she just looked like a typical black woman) and making jokes about her eating fried chicken.
Was genuinely shocked. I was thinking it might be the parents that instill that kind of thinking, or maybe the internet, either way that kind of thinking starts really young and it's horrible.

I grew up in NYC my whole life and every time I walked my black ass into one of their shops, they'd follow me and rush me out the store. So one time, I left one of their gift shops and walked across the street to the Latino gift shop and bought the same shit I was looking for over there. They were big mad watching me walk out with bags of products. I refuse to go where I'm not wanted or uncomfortable. I'm really tired of people trying to tell us to be inclusive and think about everyone else. I'm done with that mess. I'll spend my money at other places.

OK if they rush you out of the store, then yeah I can see how that’s being racist. It’s kind of strange since the Chinese do have a culture quirk where they do follow you around the stores. It stems from back in the middle ages were the rich people want the merchant to cater to their every need. But, at the same time, not be talked to by a lower born person. I say just feel their energy. If they don’t like you, they will make you feel it, unlike white oeople.

I remember being in China with my aunt (for her work but the company always gives an extra ticket in case the person is married or has a young child she wants to bring) like 20 years ago. The reaction of the people in the villages deep in the country when they saw her assistant (a black woman) and me (a white child with naturally curly blond hair): lots of people wanted to take photos and touch my hair and that of the assistant. At the time, I don't understand the discomfort of my aunt and her assistant, I just liked the attention (again, I was a kid) but in retrospect: whoa o.O.
The only thing I can say is that I don't think they were malicious, they'd just never seen a black person or a child with curly blond hair except on TV. V (the assistant) didn't have people comparing her to a monkey, but a lot of people were comparing her to Janet Jackson (V didn't look even remotely like Janet Jackson). I guess she's the only popular black woman they know by name?
Ps: Again, it's been 20 years, so it's probably changed since then.

I have to wonder how much population size may affect racial tension. Growing up as Korean-American in a small US town, all of us minorities kind of congregated together regardless of actual ethnicity. Black, Hispanic or Asian, didn't really seem to matter, as far as i was aware we all figured it was better to stick together as "minorities" rather than divide even further.
Now, this isn't to say I haven't experienced light stereotyping from people over the years, but I've always considered it more of a result of general culture than of racial tension between minorities. Like, I wouldn't expect to hear something weird from a black person more than a white person or anyone else. It was just general population thing, at least here.

They even joked me to not date an asian 😅

They outsourced their jobs (google it) and closed down their factories in the northwest. General Motors was a big employer and source of income for Michigan. After they closed down, lots of people loss their jobs. With this, Toyota began to pop up dealerships but no factories in out area. People began to blame asian car companies for “making general motors shutdown” due to competition in the market. While we didn’t have a high asian population at the time, we had Chinese and Korean immigrants arriving. So they began to harass asians and people who owned asian brand cars.

    (💙Commenting for the algorithm💙)
As a mixed race person (black & white), who grew up in a small town in the deep south. As a kid (4-11 years old before moving) at least I was always surrounded with positivity for the most part. Only ever delt with name calling (I was called weird by one person) due to the fact that I have social anxiety. From what I saw at least. No one really judged each other based off of skin color. Pleasantly & surprisingly enough. People would only be judged by show of character, nothing else. Heck. Even the white kids would side-eye *anyone* who they remotely thought were being rude to other people based on the color of their skin.
But when I moved to a city, and went to public school. I was really taken aback by how much aggression, discrimination, and other forms of hatred were just out on full display. Like. I vividly remember thinking "Is this what the real world is like?" Because it was _that_ jarring to me. -Really made me feel like the definition of: 'Oh sweet summer child,' lol.-
And now as an adult realizing that this is actually a huge issue. It just makes me really sad and stressed. I figured that since Black people and Asian people were both enslaved (Asian immigrants/ Asian-American citizens, being sent to concentration camps during ww2), and faced tons of other terrible issues due to the color of their skin, that there would be a lot more inter-community solidarity.
I really wish that there was a lot more kindness from both sides. Being racist to people, especially people of a different race who are genuinely nice people, isn't going to magically solve racially discriminatory issues. It just creates more. Ya know. If someone's being crappy, *kindly* try to reason with/ re-educate them. And if they refuse to listen, then in that instance, you don't owe them your time.

I think most of this exists in areas where Black People and Asian Americans are in close proximity. Otherwise, the rest of us are not hanging on to things that happened 30 and 40 years ago and not living in the online world - we get along fine. Now my view is bipartisan because my wife of many years is Native Southeast Asian/Filipina and we have 2 Blasian daughters. She has been well accepted in my Black friends/Family circle and We have mingled well in the Filipino community here. Where we live there is an AsiaTown near the larger Metro City. Its largely Chinese but is made up of many East Asian and Southeast Asian Ethics with various Asian businesses and lots of Asian restaurants. We frequent the area and never see any problems when we see other black people there as well. Every Spring there is an Asian Festival in that area. Its a large happening where all ethnics and races of the city come together and watch shows and eat the various Asian foods. Its in its 11th year I think and there has never been any conflicts. There are people that need drama and conflict in their lives. The rest of us live and let live and get along with everyone and live in the present, not the past. Life is too short. No matter your race - not everyone is going to accept and/or like you. Move on to people that do because no matter the race, there are good, decent people among their number that are just trying to get along just like you (if you are like that, too). Peace.

I’ve always wondered why were there so much tension between the Asian and Black Americans, this sure shed some lights. I always thought that both races will be able to get along well considering the historical similarities between the Chinese Americans and Black Americans. I’m of Chinese descent and live in the smallest country located in Southeast Asia. I always thought it was because of cultural differences hence people of African descent are more comfortable speaking about the slavery, whereas in Chinese culture, we refrained from talking about it. But somehow it felt odd, it feels like in America, no one knows that the large Chinese dispersions during the early 1900s was due to Chinese being coerced/abducted from China and forced to sell themselves as indentured slaves (also known as coolies) to western countries and their colonies, in order to replace black slaves because of the abolition of slavery, hence the beginnings of the earliest Chinese immigrants. In fact, many overseas Chinese diaspora are descendants of the coolies, which we do not talk about. Hence many overseas Chinese supports BLM even though we might not have much interactions. I genuinely hopes that people are able to see past skin colours, interacts more and resolve misunderstandings amicably.

In my youth, this hurtful dichotomy was almost hushed up. I was told a lot that any harmful stereotypes were basically only coming from white people. I get not unloading everything on a kid and all, but when the spark notes don't cover key aspects, there's a problem. Over-simplifying such things to that degree did not do me any good, it didn't do anyone any good, it just left me ignorant and everyone else mad about that ignorance when it inevitably meant I put my foot in my mouth. Of course I did, there was no other place to put my feet, there was no foundation to stand on. I couldn't know every part of it, but the fear of letting me in on this "secret" robbed me of having actual fruitful conversations, it didn't save me from running into situations where I had to engage with it one way or another.

Our teachers were Chinese. My roommate had long braids and they would always come up and try to touch her hair and try to take pics. I wore mine natural and got a few looks too. I think because I could speak Chinese that they didn’t say nothing rude to my face but was definitely an awkward feeling. I did hear someone make foreigner comments in Chinese when our class walked by and just looked at him like wtf…

From my own experience (as an African American woman), I get along with Asian people (as well as other people regardless of their race) and while I knew not everyone is like that, I also thought Black and Asian people would stay in their own lanes and not have this type of tension. Anyway, thanks for the informative video!

This attacking Asians for being influenced by black people makes me think of the drama where Elvis and all the British bands are getting cancelled for "stealing" or "copying" black artists, and people still genuinely believe "Elvis is a racist" "The Beatles are racist" "The Stones are racist" "The Clash are racist" when... Elvis has been very clear that he was influenced partially by black artists. Name any British band from the 60s or 70s, they've also been very clear about it, they didn't hide anything or try to pass black people's songs off as their own creations. Just because actual copying happened back in the 60s, doesnt mean anyne who's white automatically is a racist or a thief or a copycat.

Okay, i wanted to share my personal experiences here. I grew up with my grandma who was mixed black and white-- my mom was a prostitute and I don't know much about my father. I'm Black but I dont think my father was black because I had straight hair growing up and my nose is kind of narrow. Other than that I look black.
When I was in middle school I was put into the gifted program in my school district. There were about 200 students but I was one of the only black people. Because of that, a large proportion of my friends were Asian. Fast forward to high school-- I go to one of the five most ethnically diverse high schools in the world and so my friend group is diverse.
I've always had great relationships with Asians but ever since the pandemic, they've strained and I lowkey don't talk to any of them at all, but again, you drift apart in life no matter the circumstances. One of my closer friends did call me the n word one time but it was in a joking manner although after the pandemic it did bother me. Now that affirmative action has ended, I think tensions are higher than ever. I want to help ease the tensions but I've been debating how to do so over the past few years. I feel like I care more about this topic because of my upbringing, and I just hope my heart is in the right place.
But there's also the part of me who longs for my father. At least growing up, I did (I'm only 21, so I only recently grew out of orphanhood). And I need to take a DNA test because I don't know what ethnicity my father is, meaning I don't know half of my culture. It's alienating and leaves me wondering who I am. I'm pretty sure my father was Asian because of my appearance but I don't know which ethnicity although I'm pretty sure it's not East Asian, but then again, what if my dad was mixed, too? There's just too many variables and a DNA test is the only option. But as I was saying, the fact that my father is likely Asian, makes me want to ease the conflict as well. This is definitely part of my hero's journey.

As a black woman I applaud you Tony! The most common Asiaphobia I see from black people is the black edits of anime characters. Black people will attack Japanese people, call them racist, say they already have representation, and Blasians exist when they always give them BLACK features not BLASIAN features. Not coincidentally this is the onlytime black people talk about POC having enough rep.
I also think this was a missed opportunity to talk about Johnny Somali in Japan. Why? Because he makes racist jokes. He says "Korean war, you know what we do to you" and shouts about tragedies that happened to Japan: Fukushima and the atomic bombs which were literally Truman and WW2 propaganda excuses to annihalate civilians for being "the enemy" that there's still way too much apologism for. A Korean guy called out all of this by saying that Johnny not only didn't know about the Korean War at all, but unlike a lot of Asians who kiss America's ass or use their own Japanophobia from their own countries, he defends the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki instead of blaming them, even though he was Korean and had family likely affected by the war. He also had a Japanese wife. So Tony, I love this vid but you missed Johnny Somali and the (hey if any toxic black person is here to complain about blackwashing being fake go away) blackwashing of Japan, being the most blatant examples of the Asiaphobia.
The other thingwith black Asiaphobia is black people seem to particularly out to get Korean and Japanese people. Not as much Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Singaporean, etc, almost always accusing Koreans of cultural appropriation for simply singing r and b or wearing braids, or Japanese people for simply existing.
For all the black people hating white and Asian people and acting as if every white or Asian who "appropriates" (I mean simply wears garments, sings music, etc), criticizes racebending or their own biases (black people will insist Irish, Scottish, Welsh, and Slavic people weren't oppressed when history says otherwise), their Afrocentricsm of trying to claim famous Europeans were black ("The Irish were originally black", "Cleopatra was black", "King Richard was black", yadayada) is out to get them when it's the politicians and actual fringe groups, not your average white or Asian person, they sure keep proving themselves to be THE MOST RACIST AND TOXIC GROUP especially online.
