  • Last years Cottage Garden was a STRUGGLE. Year 2 at this house, we are changing things up, also going back to the things that has worked for us in the past that we didn't do last year because we were under a time crunch. I'm back to using coconut coir, pearlite and vermiculite as my seed starter mix- I used this in my '21 and '22 garden and it worked great!
Trying to grow onion again this year despite the voles devastation of last years garden. Hopefully the hardware cloth works.
We are also changing up my whimsy garden style and merging it with our past market garden style, this video with be up on Friday, so stay tuned if you'd like to see more of our big changes this year!

Kelly these vids. are wonderful because we get to see how much love and dedication you put into your home. Hubby and I just moved out of NY to Colorado Springs. We are praying to purchase a home within a year or so. (whatever He wills). Your video with Scott blessed us on the home economy and how living in a big city isn't going to be counter productive to live the kind of lifestyle we want. We prayed hard and the Lord blessed us by bringing us to move here. I would love it if you could make a video on how you stated growing your own produce. I've been trying to look up on where to start for when we get our home and I'm super overwhelmed. Any of your homemaking wisdom would be helpful and greatly appreciated as I'm a newbie and don't know where to start. Bless you sister for all your videos xo 💕

Good luck with the onions! Here on the West Coast voles=gophers. So frustrating! Your garden is going to be beautiful. ❤❤❤

Such a good video! Thank you! I love growing onions from seed. Here in Siberia we start onion seeds in February, plant them in mid-May, and they always turn out good. I agree that it can be a bit tedious, but definitely less expensive.

so interesting that you are writing from Siberia. I am wondering/curious if your onions do so well from seed because of the extended hours of daylight you experience. I have so much trouble in upper New York State trying to grow many things. We live in one of the 'grayest' areas of the our country. We don't receive a ton of sunshine - lots & lots of cloudy days, even when it is warm. I really have trouble with things like tomatoes, eggplants, peppers because I don't have a greenhouse, we don't have tons of sun & we have super late & very early frosts. I keep trying to encourage my hubby to invest in a greenhouse or hoop house. I can not plant ANYTHING (except lettuce & peas) before June 1st or I risk losing it to hard frosts. Isn't that crazy? And then I only have until end of Sept sometimes.

You’re off to a great start with the garden! I am one and probably others, that recommended Dixondale Farms to you. I agree, the $16 is expensive when the harvest isn’t what you hopped for. What I found helpful is how they drop the price with how many bundles you purchase. So now I let my sister know when it’s time to order and between us we easily get the price down. Plus it allows me to share with my mom and a friend. Your onion starts looked great so hopefully with the effort to prevent vole problems and with healthy starts, you’ll have a lovely onion 🧅 harvest. May the Lord bless the work of your hands. God Bless you.

Yes, thank you Cheryl! It was you!! I’m hoping this year goes good, and we’ve resolved our vole problem and I can get back to ordering with them next year!

We are getting our stuff all planted too. I've been wanting one of the seed blockers but haven't done it yet. Do you fertilize your starts with anything?
