Great advice. I worked as a SysAdmin for years and eventually got back into recording and because of my SysAdmin background I was the IT guy for the Media department. Basically never update a production computer unless the update has a fix your sys has to have. Then if possible build a test computer like your production system and test the update on it before ever installing it on a production system. As John Paul said.... If it ain't broke don't fix it. It's a good policy for home computers too. Enjoy your working computer having to rebuilt production computers are a major pain, not only the rebuild process, but all the people yelling at you "when are you going to be done???" every five minutes.

This is great advice! Always make sure your mission-critical software is compatible before updating the OS. I always wait until at least the ".1" OS release if I can, for both the OS vendor and the software makers to work out the kinks. Thanks for making this video!

It's really simple, really GOOD ADVICE that a lot of people will ignore. I've gone through many situations where upgrading 'because newer should be better!' is just simply not true if it doesn't work as intended!
Came here after getting a new M1 Mac Mini and loaded Sonoma on it thinking may as well start clean with the latest OS. It's been having a lot of issues especially when connecting external drives. So much so that it suddenly cut power while a spinning hard drive powered by the USB port was connected, causing it to de-power, the repower up within 1 second (that can't be good for a classic spinning HDD). If the HDD is dead it would sting a lot due to the data loss because of course, I haven't backed up like the silly person that I am...
The thing is I should of known this, but my old Mac is just humming along for years and years on Mojave (at least 4+ years old) and I'd forgotten that new releases of MacOS have been quite buggy in the past (I had a terrible experience with an old build of Leopard 10.5.0 for example that was largely fixed by 10.5.2 or so).
Don't update unless you need it for whatever reason or you don't depend on your computer to be stable and predictable. Now this is never a guarantee, but less likely to have issues on older and more mature software.

Great video and thanks for your time creating this. Today, I bought a Mac Mini (M1) strictly for DJ use with Serato. I have 16 GB of memory and 2 TB of SSD storage. I just checked the Serato release notes that say it's compatible with Sonoma OS. I'm not sure what OS the Mac will ship with being that I bought it Apple Refurb. Hopefully jumping straight to Sonoma is the right chess move! Thanks again for your insight!!!

I purchased beginning of 2023 my first Mac , OS Ventura. Running Ableton Live and lots of plugins, I just upgraded to Sonoma and I am happy I did, Ableton runs faster as it was in Ventura. During my time on windows, I had a lot of headaches. I learned with windows, never run an old computer, hacking the system to make it work.

I have a 2011 macmini been going well in Bitwig bit its stuck at Catalina. Ive been thinking of getting a new mini M series for last year or so then I saw a company was selling a Macstudio M1 Max and was over $500 cheaper than the M2 which really isnt much faster Id never notice but the point is I saved a ton of money and it came with Ventura NOT Sonoma which to me was a big plus as I knew the audio drivers worked for my Fantom 0 and other gear with no issues so save money if you can buy one step back and get one step back in the OS at the same time. win win. cheers bro

If you are on a project and you update major OS version e.g. 12 - 14, you are creating additional project of optimising whatever was working fine before. It is okay to stick with the same OS version for even 3-4 years enough time to trade in new laptop. Just upgrade minor versions e.g. 12.5 - 12.7

More reason why you should become a hybrid music producer or just stay mostly analog with the use of audio digital convertor. Also I have told people that the new concept of these digital suppliers is that they will start discontinuing support for their older hardware devices, software and force you to buy their latest hardware device with the latest software. So, if you had the audio analog hardware devices you would not have had to replace it for years. In the long run you will have spent a lot of money on upgrades. And guess what, your software that is not supported is something that you can't hold in your hand and neither is it something to sell become it's just digital 1s and 0s. My advice it to stay analog as much as possible and don't get caught in the digital software trap.

I Screwed the Pooch. Is there a way I can Reformat my Intel Mac mini to an Older operating system? Sonoma is Glitching out all my Apps. I just wanted the new Sampler in Logic, But now Im getting TAL sampler. Apple ruined my Music Career in the 90's When I was using Cubase on a Power PC Clone Mac. Updated to os 8 and the computer self destruct. Apple Strikes again.
