- Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2020 | In times of crisis and challenge, we ask ourselves: What is the true value of travel? Is it just hedonism...or something more powerful? After a lifetime of exploring Europe - and inspiring Americans to see Europe as the springboard for world exploration - Rick Steves shares his reasons why. This special episode is a sonnet to travel - an introspective love story, set in Europe, that vividly celebrates the rewards of exploring our world and the joy that awaits those who travel. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #whywetravel

"the opposite of fear is understanding" - Rick Steves
This.
Steves awoke my travel lust. He gave a small class on how to travel cheaply in Europe, in Seattle, 1981. He showed us his self published 1st guidebook, all of 100 or so pages long.
My planned 3 week trip to Europe stretched to 5 months. I was hooked. Then shortly after this, an 18 month trip around the world, 38000 km of land travel with a backpack, a budget of less than $5 a day and a strong pair of shoes.
Via the trans- Siberian railway, I ended up in Switzerland, happy and penniless. Spent the next 17 years in this wonderful country, became a Swiss citizen in the process.
I did manage a few trips back to the USA, but Europe was in my heart.
Now 40 years after the Steves class, I am retired in Switzerland, having had a full and very adventurous life, thanks to travel.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful and inspiring story.
Thank you for sharing such a beautiful experience. I love reading such comments.
Wow
The world needs more people like Rick Steves ❤️
For sure! Mr Steaves for Brazil’s presidency
And, like Burt Wolf.

Why does his narrative sound more like a poem? Because he has traveled. It's the one experience no one can take from you: your life itself. Make the best of it.
This was a cool way to celebrate 4 decades of travel.
Yess
@@whateverbabe that's probably why the season was so short, he was looking back through his travels.
It not just a video, it is an emotion.
It's not just a video, it's an adventure!!!
I have seen many Rick's video shows, but this time I was almost ready to cry......
I think I did
Same!!
I second that for ourselves...
Me too
SAME!
Great tribute to travel when you can't travel easily.
I really needed this. sometimes when you travel too much it can start to lose its meaning you have to remind yourself for the reason why we suffer through plane rides and train rides and walking through stressful airports and rude ticket agents and hurt arms from heavy bags and spending time tired in transit. When you feel the joys of meeting amazing people and making new connections and seeing things in real life youve only seen in your dreams and on tv you realize its all worth it. It really makes life worthwhile.
I hear you, but please try to turn all of those negatives, into real positives. You see, even lifting, carrying, waiting, flying, feeling upset, hurt, or whatever, it's all worth it and it's all for good reason. Maybe not @ the time, but almost always in hindsight. I always enjoy every single aspect of my interstate &/or global travel experiences. Why? Because i just do and i don't get to do it too often, so i make the most out of every single trip abroad. I don't look @ anything as a negative & i try not to moan and groan, bec every seemingly negative experience, in the end, will only help us to grow into bigger, better and stronger people. Also, when we complain too much, it ruins an otherwise wonderful travel experience. If we wear the blinkers, we miss out on great things and great opportunities around us. It blinds us to the otherwise beauty of the "moment". Have fun, no matter what you do, no matter what the experience. Smile too, for a smile and choosing to carry peace and joy within our hearts, costs absolutely nothing. Peace :-)
Thanks for your service Rick, both as a travel documentary maker, and a humanitarian.
Been there in Dingle y,thanks to you,,,always in touch with you
Omg is he dead
@@0deszuh111No, the show unfortunately ended in 2020.
I was having a rough day after a rough year and then I went to your CZcams channel and found this gem. You’re wonderful, Rick! I’ve traveled with your guidebooks exclusively for over two decades and you have been a shining beacon for me. Thank you so much for a reminder of what is important in life!
1,000%!!!!!!!
My 85 years old grandma watches your videos nonstop in loop. Thank you.
...so does my 85 year old mother. LOL. Rick's the best!
I am glad to see a comment from an Indian in this channel...
So do I
I feel the need to travel deep down in my soul. Like its what im supposed to be doing. Meeting people, experiencing beautiful cultures and festivals. Keeps me sane thinking about it.
rick steves europe and globe trekker were my favorite shows growing up
Hello Rick, You made a plea for the defendant. His name is freedom. If I were the judge, I would acquit him now. Well done my friend. 👍🏼
Thanks for all your travel videos. They were both comforting during the pandemic in letting me "revisit" places I've been before, and helping me build a list of unexpected places I'd love to visit in the future.
Hi Rick, I've only known you and your travel videos for 6 years now and absolutely love them/you and have watched them over and over and always get loads of fun, excitement, education, culture, nature and a good general understanding of some of theses fantastic places around the Northern Hemisphere. I myself live in the U.K. in a small Yorkshire coastal town of Bridlington and it's my little piece of Europe Heaven. I unfortunately, my health and mobility is in great decline and can not go to some of these places and I am in great pain all the time but somehow when I watch your programmes I feel as if you are travelling for me and/or bringing theses places to me in my living room and it makes me feel better and helps me to relax as your so easy to watch when I feel ill - they're/you're a great pick-me-up. So thank you Rick for that and bringing years of travel-fun and awareness of some absolutely amazing places in Europe to the masses out there, that either love travel or like me are in a situation where they can't go but love to watch. You're programmes make me happy, make me smile and really help with my pain, so keep on making them and keep on travellin'! Love you Rick.
This video made me emotional because I just started to write a blog post about how much I am missing travel. This was beautiful
This is soooo poetic 🥺 I loved it so much and I'm glad I discovered your channel recently. Stay safe, I hope this pandemic ends and we travel again.
😊😊
I never stop traveling, even during 2020. I tried solo camping, visited Bryce canyon, lake Tahoe. During September /October 2021, I traveled all over Egypt and Jordan. I made short video of my journey 😊, let me know what you think ☺️?
Beautifully said. Travel feeds the soul.
An extensive travel experience so full of joy and adventure, European travels with Mr. Steve is a delight to watch.

what a great video 🙌🏼
My credit card statement disagrees.
How I love this. I started solo travel in 2019 and I am deeply passionate about it and I can't wait to see and learn more in the coming months and years.
I am a solo traveler too and soo hope the world opens us for travel this year!
Solo travel? How do you do it? lol It sounds scary.
@@AmandaFromWisconsin Solo traveling changed my life and is the single greatest gift I’ve ever given myself. Like me, many women will find solo traveling to be empowering, enjoyable and a wonderful experience.
Can I join you??
@@clam371384 I’m a solo traveller as well....and I love the freedom of going whenever and wherever you feel like going, no complications in planning just me and myself. It’s also a chance to meet new friends along the way. Embracing solitude😊
I am so greatful for this channel. So many poor quality travel things on youtube. This is the classic way of documenting a travel and that's the reference the very young should have when setting expectations. Thank you!
What a great expression of travel that touches our hearts! Appreciated it a lot🤍
...ease my "badly needed visiting new places and meet the people". Thanks Rick.
A truly beautiful, uplfting and moving statement.

I Don't know how Rick Steve uses those word to find out the meaning of traveling. And honestly Every words he used tells of a scene that roam in our mind.
It’s amazing how his elegant and classic style to produce this show, makes me feel like i’m really traveling, love it love it!

We’ve cancelled so many trips. We’re all ready to get out there. Just thinking...There should be a Rick Steve’s movie!
I'm not usually someone that comments on videos but I really needed your video today as a fellow traveler and really respect and appreciate what you have been doing for decades and you truly eloquently express what travel means so much to so many of us that used to travel regularly pre-pandemic. Thank you for doing what you do.
His deliverance is so relaxing. Closest thing to a transporter I know of... God blessed us by your gift of sharing. Thank you

God bless you Rick Steve. God bless the USA. In this collection of why we travel, I almost remembered every place in here because I have literally watched all your previous tour series. That means I have travelled with you always. I love you so much
I wonder how magnificently Rick Steves explains the human history through his travells and mesmerising styles of story telling. I salute this preacher of humanity from the core of my heart.

This channel is the best thing on the internet for me ! Rick is such a great traveller, narrator and stroyteller. I have bingewatched almost all the videos during lockdown and I believe this not just a leisure and entertainment but also provides knowledge and experience. I love this ❤️ this video is special for sure ! 😍
Thank you Rick for the reminder of why travel has become such an important part of my life.
I love getting out of my comfort zone, learning new languages (even of it’s just hello, please, & thank you), trying new cuisines, & the list goes on.
You’re inspiring me to plan more adventures so I can heard off as soon as it’s safe to do so again.
Well done Rick. Very well narrated I express the same sentiment

The music within all of his videos, including this one, is always beautiful & very enjoyable.
Thanks for sharing and for educating us.
You are really the best, Rick!
All of your travelling videos during years are in a league for it self. And now this bright torch of a video you put as an encouragement and response to the situation we currently are living. Uplifting with humans like you, who spread positive wisdom from the heart!
One of your best videos Rick, loved the message! Keep it up, always inspiring!
This is the most inspiring video about traveling! Thank you!
this is fantastic, Rick. Thank you for sharing this.. can't wait to see Europe again!
I just love watching Rick Steves. He is such a wealth of information when it comes to traveling. Traveling to Europe has been on my bucket list since I was young. I still remember when I first traveled out of the country. I was in third grade, going into fourth. My parents and I took a trip to Aruba. I was just amazed to see a new part of the world I had never seen before. Since then, I have been there 12 times. My parents and I are going to Aruba in a few days, and I can’t wait. The nice thing when traveling is you can meet new people. We have met some incredible people who have been coming to Aruba for many years. When you travel, connect with people, make some friends. I always look forward to traveling.
This was truly a beautiful video, it spoke to the humanity and the commonality of who we are as people, sans borders. You are not only a national treasure Rick, but you are also an "International Treasure" :)
This was especially heartwarming with all that’s happening in Europe right now. Thanks Rick ❤️
What amazing journey Rick.
