- Robin Esrock's success as a global adventurer, travel writer, TV producer and international TV personality was no accident, although it did start with one. Struck down on his bike at a Vancouver intersection, Robin hobbled away with a broken kneecap, and one year later, a modest $20,000 insurance settlement. It was just enough for him pack up his things, quit his job, and set off on a one-year solo round-the-world backpacking adventure to 24 countries. He named his journey Modern Gonzo, and committed to record his year of living dangerously, with online weekly reports, photography, videos, and interviews with every person he met. In doing so, he pioneered a new era of multi-platform, switched-on and wired-in travel journalism, leading to adventures beyond his wildest dreams.

I didn't have a lot of money and I have done 70 countries and lived in 9. One doesn't need a lot of money to travel. One needs a plan. Have many connections. And have skills to sell. The world exposes itself to us and we learn to go go go. I don't regret my life. Do I have many world possessions? No! But I have hundreds of friends in 7 continents and I speak several languages.
inspiring!!
Best comment I've ever read!I love you already😄😄
Help us too
You have a friend in Antartica?
@@WeedIsHealthyForYou not sure if they actually do but it's possible
I almost died at 23. I started traveling after healing. 28 now and 18 countries later I have friends all over and learned to love this world more. Stay blessed stay traveling.
how did you do that? how did you start?
if people travel more, this world will have less conflicts and wars.... the reason why we fight is because we don't understand each other...
I agree you 100 % ...you said great...
So aptly spoken my friend!
I've worked for the last year and saved up $20,000. I'll be starting my travel in a month :)
+Keyboard Crusader I am going travelling in 3 months :) Beer somewhere? lol

Great video Robin. I'm going on around the world trip soon i'm quitting my job of 24 years. I'm 41 and I'm sure I will learn a lot about myself while travelling.
Bon voyage!
jokzZ
Are you blogging/vlogging about it?
Shlomo Great yes, I have been. Heading back to the UK this week, but back out exploring SE Asia in October.
ExploreList Enjoy your trip to SE Asia!
When you travel make sure to open your mind and heart for adventures. Do unexpected decisions, explore unusual paths that you wouldn’t try in the comfort zones and most importantly: talk to strangers, make new friends and ask questions. Your memories, stories and experience found during those days form the body of your life.
I'm traveling the world too. But, I'm retired (still in good shape mentally and physically) and kept my most important things in a small storage. Life is so simple without all the stuff and extra clutter. Living any other way makes you a slave to your stuff. No matter what you have you have to take care of it which means taking away your precious time for an animated object.
Love this Robin. So many great points. Your view on "Paradise", arming yourself with a smile etc. You inspire so many of us.
I'm 22 yr old.....and I'm gonna start my travel from my country( India) ....around the world. ....and ur speech ..which is motivating ....hope I'll start sooner.....thanks
Zzzzz..... I have.... coffee.... if you'd like some. REALLY DOES THE JOB!
I am so motivated to do that as well.. and good luck buddy.. Come to Bulgaria as well
Did u guys do it?
same question..u became a traveller or not?
Did you started?
"People we meet create the paradise we find"
I really love this video. It captures what I have been saying in my classes for years now. Can't wait to share it with my students. My students created a quote that sums up my philosophy which is "travel the world with an open mind and kind heart"... after watching this, I might add... with a smile on your face.
"I smile when I'm nervous and I laugh when I'm scared, because it sure beats screaming and crying."
I got so tired during my study of my master, after that I spend a lot of time on the way. At first, I had no mood of new things or beautiful. Just threw myself out of the marsh. After a few weeks, things became a bit different. I started to talk to strangers along the way. And I was less depressed gradually. Now I move to a city I like and finally feel alive again.
I was really lucky to be approached for a business opportunity in the travel industry.. because of it, i've traveled and learned so much about the world but most importantly about myself... Love this talk, i felt and understood it with all my heart.
The world is a book and those that do not travel read only but one page... :)
Edwardo Morris of curse ,it's really true in this world.
This is the best speech I have heard in SO long...amazing! There are more people that want to help you than hurt you---love it!
I am so glad you got to experience and share these. I have travelled quite a bit, and totally feel you man. I am 18 and will travel more in my life :)
This was a good speech! Love traveling and I believe, based on all of my traveling, the most important thing is your state of mind to deal with unknown. And I have to agree, the connection with people makes the place and travel an unbelievable experience.

Amazing TED talk. Thanks Robin Esrock for giving me motivation for my soon starting journey to Tanzania.
I do not regret not traveling, because I do, and it is awesome. Kudos fellow traveler. Once we stop seeing new things, we start dying.
What a beautiful lesson; it's the people you share the journey with that make all the difference :)
love this, "people you meet create the paradise you find"
Robin you are 100% correct on all points.!!! “Don’t panic” is top of the list. Great talk.!! Thank youuuuu😊👍🙏🌹🌎♥️👏

Hi
I am 22 years and like seriously I just left AFRICA, I watched this video came at the right time, ROBIN words are soothing
thumbs up Sir
I don't know how I may praise you, you are just awesome man. Love you.
Yes! Such perfect timing for me to hear this, as usual! I love life, and shaking up routine is definitely necessary to keep it fresh!
So true. Loved your talk.thank you bless you n all your dreams come true.
Well, this made a smile on my face! HUGE inspiration indeed, thank you Robin!^^
had a hard time during the intro -- yet i absolutely agree with the ENTIRE concept of offering a smile to those with come in contact with and to never panic. this has served me as "weapon" in more places than i can write about. as a new york resident, i am prepared for the least imaginable challenge and more. however, that smile robin talks about … opens doors in the best of ways. fabulous advice. by the way, genuinly using the words: PLEASE and THANK YOU will never hurt. proven! :)
Travel is good for the soul!! :)
8:53 this is so true. Travellers become victims when they look like victims.
This is one of the best Ted talks on traveling. It deserves more views.
You are echoing my beliefs! A smile goes a mile is my mantra for life in general.
Really motivating speech. I’ve begun to go work using opposite side of the street.
Powerful words, loved it! Great lessons to learn for many people! :)

I have two provinces (and Zero territories) left to check of my Canada bucket list ( BC and NFLD). I definitely see travel in my future.

Very good talk, thanks!
Amazing talk😄👌🏼 thank you🤗
This video should have much more views than it already has ..
A solo traveler, been to 38 countries around the world and Albanians are still the most friendliest and heartwarming people Ive met in my life.
Really inspiring speech. good film photos too
Excellent information and well delivered
Really enjoyed this! Keep it cominggg! 😁😁
i feel like its so much easier for men to just travel like that.
Women can do it too...I traveled alone for 7 months to over a dozen countries and was sometimes couchsurfing! Just be careful, always look like you know where you're going, hold onto your purse/bag, and *trust your instincts*, as the speaker says!
not unless you make it by giving excuses
As a fellow South African, I’m inspired
The most frankiest place in the world Albania 🇦🇱. So proud to hear that as albanian .I came across this video by accident, and I heard this beautiful phrase that warmed my heart.I love traveling likewise.
Guy's amazing.
Loved it!
Traveling should be for everyone. Look for opportunities to travel, meet new people and learn about a different culture. There could be a place in your country that you haven’t been to, travel there.
Paul, your point is such a good one. There are interesting things right in one's city or country. For these people if they want to start out small what I recommend is that they check into a hotel right in their city. And spend the weekend roaming it. Go on a tour. Go to the museum. Go to the zoo. Anything. Just get out there. Start practicing. Then maybe next time you'll want to go to the neighboring state. And do the same thing.
A lot of wisdom here!
Let go of control. Timeless wisdom everybody knows deep down and he just told it in his way without knowing it.
Hi, I am about to star my big journey. I come from Poland, after my final exams in highscool i decided that i want to make my vacations wild and i went to USA on my own. i've been there 3 months but mostly i was working. i saw few cool things but not as much as i expected to. But instead of it, i have money now.I went back to Poland.I already traveled like all of major cities and mountains in and around my country so far. I have my travels already planned to Italy, Germany, Ukraine and United Arab Emirates. Tons of people warned me about the last one but since i left USA i found out exactly what the speaker in video was talking about. Most of that "be careful, there is dangerous" talking is nonsense. Of course i am still a little scared still but excitment is taking advantage in this fight inside my mind. After those travels i will go back to USA and make my dream come true: Travel all the way through Route 66. What you guys think about it?
Stand Up PL/US u are doing a incredible job...keep it up... i wish u good luck man.. love from india
Stand Up PL/US. lot of empty space in U.S.
Standing Up PL/US
Very inspiring!
Inspirational ! 😊🌎
I enjoyed this
One of the more enjoyable talks.
+19grand Your comment is quite interesting. I was thinking, what a boring talk. I felt this guy was a terrible public speaker. There wasn't much interesting about his talk. Of course, the places he has travelled are interesting but I got tired of hearing how great he is and how he knows everything :)
BRILLIANT.
Amazing channel!
love this

"wherever you are is where you`re supposed to be."
I got his point, but what about the passenger sitting next to his friend?
+Samuel H the passenger too was supposed to be there; his time had come.
Samuel H thats not the point, the solution he gave was not to the problem of bad things happening, but to the philosophy of choosing 1 out of 10 s also giving up on 9 out of 10... Its a really turn down for adventurous minds, and his solution is the simplest and efficient, wherever you are is the best out of those ten, you just have to make sure you trust yourself enough to believe and enjoy it so!
Yeah, true.
If he came back from the trip, he would have caught his wife cheating and murdered her and her lover.
Very nice video...Thank you:
Stumbled on this video while watching travel vlogs and so happy and appreciative that you mentioned Albanians as the worlds friendlies people. I'm Albanian and we really are very friendly and sincere people. Way too much for our own good sometimes.
Awesome loved it..
Perfect!
Well done Robin!
I desperately want to travel... I am in university right now and after I graduate I am sure I will. I am a little nervous about it though being a woman, I'm not sure if it is safe to go at it alone
TheShaleco Why do you want to wait until you graduate
Because I have classes in the fall and winter and I work all summer to pay for my school
