- In this humorous talk, Janek Rubes describes his experience living in Prague - a city with over 300 times more tourists than locals in its center. He also shares what he is doing to fight scammers, cut excessive amounts of love locks, and promote an authentic and truly local experience to visitors of the Czech capital. Janek Rubeš is a Czech reporter and filmmaker. Forbes magazine ranked him in 2016 as one of the top 30 most talented people in the Czech Republic below the age of 30. He studied at the Film School in Písek in 2008, and subsequently at the Tomas Bata University in Zlín from 2011 to 2014 with a degree in marketing. He worked on shows Prague vs. Crooks and Honest Guide going tens of millions of views globally on various platforms. @@michaeltravelingtheworld4688 These 2 are already great suggestions, but (I wasn't clear at all) personally I was thinking of European, African or Asian cities. They may be there, but it's hard to find them and mostly you'll have stumble upon them (I think). There are enough guide, but I feel like locals know more (as I am sort of local in Ghent, Middelburg, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen -you probably don't know where that is- or used to be in Rotterdam/The Hague).
(as Dutchie it's easier for me to go away for a small and not expensive weekend trip to these parts as for America (north till south) and it has to be longer. 😊)

It's true that now that he is quite popular, even scammers know him and get lost quick... consider though when he first started, a huge amount of risk he was taking.
I started watching his show when he was exposing the mafia taxi ring. That was done scary stuff at times.
They are wary,because they know they are on camera. But yeah, when he started he was attacked and regularly threatened
I love how this guy loves both his city and the tourists. people usually find it hard to like both and to find ways to connect those two.
FrozenRoxas I appreciate that people admire my city. Just most don't know that you WALK down a sidewalk and don't block incoming traffic. When they fly-in man I don't want to go anywhere near where they are. Too many people. If it was like that year-round, I would consider moving.

I'm so proud that Janek is Czech and is representing my country. I just wish he'd inspire people from other countries who know how to film to this elsewhere because it gives so much to so many people. I love that he's making some real changes in Prague for the better and I thank all of his tourist followers who help him with it by spreading the word. Gotta go find that lamp now, I've been running out of luck.
Thank you! I'm a Dutchman and visited Czechia two years ago for the last time. Thanks to Janek and Honza my friend and I were prepared and knew how to avoid tourist traps. We also gained more respect for your wonderful country and left Prague several times to visit other cities and villages. Often due to a recommendation by Janek and Honza. Outside Prague we've visited: Karlovy Vary, Kutná Hora, Český Krumlov, Brno, Benešov (Konopiště), Lednice-Valtice, Olomouc, Pardubice and Trěbič. But one of the villages I like the most is Mnichovice, probably because friends of ours live there. My friend is half Slovak and can communicate with the Czechs. I don't speak Czech, so I try to speak English or German with the Czechs. So far it has been great every time. I like the down to earth mentality of the Czechs. I hope the Czechs do realise how wonderful their country is.

I’m actually really impressed. I was really annoyed when watching his videos because I thought all touristy cities are the same, but hearing he is actually making a change in the city makes me so happy.
Well, he shows tourists the non tourist places where locals were hiding from tourists. So as a local I'm sort of not happy about this😔
@@kikivondugong1306 call it a trade off. Kinda spreads things around a bit more and puts more money into other areas. Also I think many people such as myself are initially drawn to his channel by his vids where he goes after the scammers.

This guy runs the most honest youtube channel, no coincidence it's named HONEST GUIDE. If you ever get a chance to visit czech republic I would highly recommend to check out the channel it covers everything you need to know about prague..

I watched the "Honest Guide" while planning a trip to Prague and believe me...it was really useful...be it a early morning walk on the Charles bridge or selecting correct money exchange house, the open lift, self drive speed boat and many more. Every city must have at least one such honest guide which will make the trip of a tourist more enjoyable

He underestimates their impact on Czech tourism. He and his buddy have single-handedly increased tourism to Prague tenfold. That congestion of tourists he talks about? ALL HIM. He and Honza did that. When they started out on youtube, it was mostly other European tourists. Now it’s this worldwide attraction and, I dare say, bordering on over-touristy. I had never thought of Prague as a destination before watching their vids. But I went and, thanks to Janek and Honza, I loved my time there.
He's so awesome! I watched his whole channel before visiting Prague , not only because I wanted to be prepared but because his content is super entertaining 😋 Needless to say I used many of his tips and my trip was absolutely epic. Every city should have someone like these guys!
First, I thought he was gonna give a set of guidelines like a tourist's dos and don'ts, so kinda disappointing for me when it turned out he wasn't gonna. I still found it entertaining to see how he used their social media presence to bring some positive influence to the people who follow them

Wow I just came back from Prague last night and saw this talk happened the week before I went. This university (Drew) is next door to my own! I wish I had been able to attend. But I probably watched all of the honest guide videos before I went and they were a great help!

In the U.S., adults don't usually cut lines in school cafeterias. In my college, there's even a higher-quality cafe that's mostly frequented by faculty, while the students eat at the regular "mess hall".

I did a master in prague in 2004 and wrote a memoire about the city and yes each time I'm coming back I'm sad to see the negative influence of mass tourism : my favorite cinema became a stip club, a library I used to go is now a fast food etc etc.
Still, it's one of my favorite city in the world and I'm glad to see people like Janek working on this matter without putting the fault only on tourists. Like in Barcelona or Venise local and foreign promoters and the mafia are the one to blame.

I was actually approached buy a schemer when I withdrew money from ATM, he wanted to change it to me for smaller banknotes, I didn't let him and I am glad, now I know it was Belorussian money!
