- Tina Brown, the journalist, editor and bestselling author of "The Vanity Fair Diaries" and "The Diana Chronicles," has been observing the British royal family for decades. And she's come to the conclusion that, as she says in "The Palace Papers: Inside the House of Windsor, the Truth and the Turmoil," for many royals, life is "all status, no quo." In this episode, which aired in June, Brown talks to Salon about the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, Meghan and Harry, disgraced Prince Andrew and the future of the monarchy.

When Markle stalked Harry, she knew her 40 odd yrs wasn't going to get her any more significant acting work. She wasn't a successful actress here in the states, hollywood had never heard of her. She wanted to be a movie star but that could never happen she wasn't talented enough. She eventually was able to get a role on the cable show suits shot in Canada, playing a character similar to her own. Interestingly she couldn't play a character outside of herself. That's why at 40 she was never going to make it. Chasing down Harry was her only chance to be noticed and unfortunately for the Brits, it worked.
I am sure she had done her homework very well. All that's happening I believe was planned by her even before her marriage. I can't believe that an almost 40 year old women didn't know the responsibilities that came by marrying unto the the royal family.
She knew alright, she had plans and they didn't work out so she turned on them.
Especially a woman who was obsessed with Diana since teenager age. Rachel knew very well about the Royal family.
She knew but chose to be ignorant
Not only did Meghan KNOW the responsibilities ... she fulfilled them.
She just wasn't told that she was supposed to be William and Catherine's sacrificial lamb as well.
Even if she didn’t completely understand, Harry was there. He could have tell her/she could have asked. Remember-he was inside the family, she wasn’t. So, benefit of the doubt, MM could have asked but most importantly, Harry could have teach her about what to expect.
It's not that Meghan wasn't allowed to have a voice. She was not allowed to have a "political" voice I believe is the correct way to put it. She was allowed a platform during her time with the RF to be influential about humanitarian causes of the monarchy. She was allowed a platform to use her background for representation of people of color. Turns out she had a totally different agenda altogether.
The interviewer was not prepared...Her assertion that Meghan was not welcomed by the British people is simply wrong. The Royal Family is also conflated with celebrity; they are obviously famous but they are part of a system of government. If you are speaking out, you are so often criticising govt policy. However, whilst they cannot directly criticise, they can drive change through their charitable endeavours..To be Royal is to be part of a team which is also hierarchical..Meghan didn't wan't, Harry didn't wan't that..They played everyone. Best that they stay in the US.

She is self made. Yes, her father raised her and paid for her education but she became a successful actress. Megan was worth $3 million dollars when she met Harry. Not bad for a tv actress.

She was doing Hallmark movies and occasional 'hot girl' bit roles as a jobbing Z-lister before she got onto Suits, which bumped her up to D-list. All the while her father and 1st husband supported her financially.
She's only a self-starter at using men to get ahead and social climbing like a monkey on steroids. Some feminist icon.
No brother and sister said father supported her because all she was getting small parts in shows until she was able to get a part in suits. Father even paid for her plastic surgeries. She was always dependent on someone else

There is no way Meghan was naïve and did not understand that marrying Harry would be a huge challenge. These comments are just silly. This lady lives in Lala land…

@@lizp6859 I wouldn't call it submission, more of a strict hierarchy. And a strict hierarchy requires at the same time both - discipline (which is not the same as submission!) and adequate, stable self-confidence, similar to what is in the army.
The specifics of the royal family will be supplemented by strict protocol and etiquette, but Meghan should already understand this as a former embassy employee and a student of international relations 😉

I thought Edward, Sophie, and Andrew’s girls and Anne’s children all had careers and their own “voice”. (Only the Monarch has to be completely neutral.) And I thought I heard that the Queen discussed MM’s desire to continue acting. The problem arose when MM & Harry decided to make a fortune “marketing” Sussex Royals in America.
I don't really understand Meghan's obsession with "the voice". Yes, the monarchy must be politically neutral, it is in all constitutional monarchies, and Meghan, an international relations specialist, should have known that. If you want to be politically active wife - marry a politician of your spectrum, not a royal.
But also within the framework of neutrality in the RF, she could be active in her own topics - such as climate change, sustainability and the improvement of women's status.
And I don't believe that her opinion was not listened to in the family, rejected, as long as it was an opinion, not nagging and demands.
Edward and Sophie did have careers but had to leave. Edward did documentaries but got criticism for focusing on the brf. He was forced to leave when crew from his production company filmed at St Andrews University when William was studying there.
Sophie was in pr and had her own company. She was set up by one of the papers. Cant remember how or why.
Princess Anne's children and Andrews children are lucky. They get the perks of being royal without the responsibilities

I do not agree with much of what Tina is saying and I have ready her book. For one, meghan was very much used to depending on a man, she used her first husband Trevor before she got suits. And then she used Cory the Canadian chef to get her known in the Toronto social scene so she has very much used men to elevate her position her entire life. Also I’m not going to feel sorry for H & M because they had to choose what palace they were going to live at for FREE! Why would we pity them, they had a life of luxury
Meghan went to Britain looking for a rich man, there are plenty of richer men than Harry, that come with no rules. She chose Harry because he came with a title, that would give her name recognition around the world, she now has that,what will she do with it?

Meghan has to be number 1 or it is a no go. I doubt very much she truly had independence in mind. She learned that she was not going to usurp Kate, and when you are part of royalty you become part of a team. Meghan is definitely not a team player. As said previously, she has to be number 1.
Tina brown mentions that royals are dependent on the monarch and not that rich. However they have alot of previliges. They have access to grace and favour apartments in the Royal palaces and Mansions on the Royal estates.
Its very hard for a royal to walk away. She is correct with this. As Harry and Meghan are finding out being a royal yiu have a private secretary, pr, security all paid for by the monarch. Plus you don't really have to work that hard either.

The thing is that she doesn't have a big career anywhere, neither in acting, nor in social activities, anywhere. Everywhere she has touched the surface, but she has not gone deep and thorough in any area.

King George VI and wife were happy being the spare! Wanted a quiet family life. His father, King George V, was also a spare. Margaret was a self destructive wild child. Edward has settled into his lesser role. Princess Ann and her children have figured it out. The British monarch is an a-political figurehead. No independent voices. Not a life for most because it doesn’t allow for free expression and there are financial limitations.

I don’t agree with Alina at all.
She was a suitcase model and on a cable TV show. She was basically an unknown actress. I had never heard of her before Harry, and I am in the United States. She's a proven liar, narcissistic social climber. She knew a lot more about the Royal Family than she would like the world to know. When Harry is of no further use to her she'll get rid of him in a heartbeat. Then she'll milk the family for money because of the children. That by the way you never see unless it's profitable for her. She's always first and foremost about the almighty dollar.

Where's your proof that Charles paid for Meghan's clothing. Harry says no so who are you to say different. It doesn't show up on the accounting and the Queen's offices said they paid for the decorations lunch etc. Charles' paid for the reception. Meg paid for her clothing and the clothing for the bridesmaids and her parents.
