On Jan 8, 1984, I had no idea that it would be the best year ever. There were many more to come, but as for my young years being 17 in 84 ruled
+it was the happiest most productive year of my 61yrs, I look back at 1984 very fondly !👍😎
January 8, 1984... It was in the heart of basketball season during my junior year of high school. 33 years ago but I can remember it like it was yesterday, including the magical vibe and aura MTV produced, back when MTV was good. Thank you for posting all of these clips, it's like climbing into a time machine. Two thumbs up!
+hear hear, Dave !!
JJ Jackson was a great guy and a class act. He is missed.
He will forever be missed. He was also proof that MTV wasn’t racist.
In 1984 I was a senior in high school. Partying every day, with tons of teenage girls flirting with me. I had a decent care and money in my pocket with no responsibilities. What a great year. Wish I could go back and do it all again.
best year in the 80's
JJ Jackson had a very clean pronunciation. I am Latino and I understand 100% his English. Wow, I wish I was watching that MTV, the current music and MTV channel sucks.
Thank you for this. I am 15 again watchin this stuff. MTV playing music; what a concept! I so miss the 80s and when we actually had a real President in office.
Trump 2020
@@FUCKINGENIOUS +BOO trump. 💩💩💩
A great "picture" of American pop music in 1984. Many of these were standards of the early MTV era. Thanks again!
Who's watching in 2024!? The Golden Age of MTV! The way it used to be.
A lot of memories to unpack here.
When the world was still sane
The Modern Music Calendar , not so much anymore . Gotta love the cheesy innocence
And now society pretends to be innocent.
Ahhhhhh! I wish you were able to keep the videos unedited. I LOVE that Big Country song (was my favorite song from late 83 to early 84).
The neat thing about this is it gives me more of a sense of when songs came out when I've kind of forgotten, and also that MTV was still showing videos from a year or two before.
January 8th, 1984…in the middle of 10th grade. Of course every generation has their favorite time. This was mine.
rip jj jackson
Jj Jackson is fantastic!
Cheap Trick was Definetly made for videos- such a visually striking band
I’m feeling like my parents talking about the “good old days”, but, seriously, the 80’s were some great times with some awesome music. Songs that are now considered classics. The only part that makes me feel old is the cheesy commercials.
They played that same Pat Benetar video 3+ years earlier on the first day the station was on. That's some staying power.
No...that video (the second ever aired on MTV) was for her version of the Young Rascals' hit "You Better Run"
Paul Duca that song was also in first day rotation i
Found it amusing that VJ JJ Jackson was calling someone else "big", as he wasn't exactly trim, himself. Lol
I was in the 8th grade my brother was a senior in high school, and my mom got cable. Woke up with it on got ready for school and went to bed with it on. Now 54 years old, my daughter asks me questions about being a Gen X.
upload march or april 84, those were very goodmonths for MTV Top 20
I wonder who won the One Night Stand contest? Even though it’s 2020, I’m jealous.
Nice jacket!!
what just happened to this class of entertainment art and music ? where everything wasn t forcefully dumbed down and not exclusviley speaking to the lowest of our instincts ...
I was born on this day!!
And?
John Lennon's world premiere video...Wow!...What could've been!😔
+I was there !!
GOOD MORNING !!!! THANK YOU !!!!
MTV had yet to find its real audience; it seemed to be marketed toward the lifelong music superfan, with all those K-Tel record deals.
Trust me by 1984 it had gained monumental popularity! You can see it in the videos and VJ interviews!
Just look at the commercials a lot of them are geared generations of people who are nostalgic for the 60s and 50s.
I want my mtv
Lol I was 14 mtv was it
all videos-not anymore
7:39 this song was covered in 1982 by Angela Clemmons. Peaked at #4 on the dance charts.
Here’s that version:

12:53 My God, those Candlelite Music commercials were crappy!
Recorded in VHS or Betamax?
Don't think back then the VHS was released yet!!
@@75harg vhs was available since the late 70s my guy

January 8 2024 ≈ 40™Aniversary
Baaaaaam!👍
This is actually 1983
Well '83 was still visible in the rear view mirror, but Van Halen's Jump/1984 album was released on New Year's Day. A lot of stuff that gets produced late in a calendar year is actually made FOR the new one, despite technically being part of the old one. Check out any movie or TV episode released in January/early February of a year, odds are the copyright date shown will be of the previous year unless if the post-production crew confirms the new one (some companies vary).
Lol, it's 01/08/84 so 1984 hadn't happened yet....Bon Joni's first record, Ratt....oh, And Billy Squire...please don't make that Rock me Tonight video...trust me.....Squire was awesome. Too bad people couldn't handle it
Kincaid.. What part of January 84 is 1984 can you not comprehend? That was the air date, even though the year was in its infancy. Are you a millennial, or just daft? 🙃
Lol January 8th 1984 doesn't sound like 1983 to me? Maybe I'm getting old
Can we actually see the whole videos?
The Ferbguy watch the 10 minute video, write down the ones you want to see then search for them
