116. Installing pinless bladeholders in my 16" scroll saw

  • In this video, I will show you how to install and use the E-Z Set Bladeholder System for 16" scroll saws. The scroll saw I am using is made by Central Machinery and sold through the Harbor Freight stores. With these new blade holders, I will be able to use both pinless and pin end scroll saw blades (the original holders only allow for pin end blades).
    Being able to use pinless (flat or plain end) blades opens up more blade choices (there is a greater variety of pinless blades than pin end blades). The pinless blades also require a much smaller pilot hole when making inside cuts.
    I have been using these holders for quite a while now and I like them. It took a little practice to get used to changing blades, but now it is 2nd nature and I can do it with my eyes closed! In the video, I deliberately went slowly so that you can see how the holders work and how to use them.

      @@ImaginethenMake now to try to figure out how to mount the blade fixture to the table top flange, it says to mount it 1/4” down exactly but my lip is so narrow I’m just not positive, plus I don’t no what the purpose is for all the holes on the bottom of the fixture itself are for. And is it normal too have to really crank super hard on the lower blade holder clamp to get it to hold the blade? I would appreciate you even more if you could explain. Thank you from Idaho

    • @ImaginethenMake
      @ImaginethenMake  Před 6 měsíci +1

      As you saw in the video, I did not mount the block to my table top because the lip of the table is too narrow (like yours). Keep in mind that this kit is for several different scroll saws. The 16" Central Machinery scroll saw that I have has a thin, sheet metal table top with a narrow lip; I can't mount the block to that. That's why I use the vise you see in the video to hold the block. Using the vise was supposed to be my "temporary" solution but so far, I have not gotten around to working out something else more "permanent". As an alternative, maybe mount the block to a scrap piece of 2x4. (I think the extra holes in the block are there to give you more mounting options.)
      I hope in the video you saw how tight I made the screws that hold the blade in the blade clamps. The screws are tight but only tightened by hand. Since the bottom of each screw is fairly flat, when it comes in contact with the flat scroll saw blade and gets tightened, it holds it in place very well. Take another look at the video and I think you'll see what I mean.
      Happy Holidays from CT! Thanks for you questions and for watching.

      Hi Julie. I'm not sure I understand what you are referring to. After I installed the new blade holders, I am then able to install EITHER a flat end OR a pin end blade in the saw. Which blade type I select depends on the project I'm working on. Being able to easily install either type of blade gives me many more blade choices that I didn't have before doing this install. I hope I answered your question.

    • @ImaginethenMake
      @ImaginethenMake  Před rokem

      Hi Julie. The blade holders (clamps) you saw me install were purchased separately. See the link in the video description for more info.
      By "round blades" I'm assuming you mean spiral blades. Spiral blades are flat end (plain end) blades. These new blade holders I installed are designed to hold BOTH plain (flat) end blades AND pin end blades. Actually, I installed these new holders so I could try using spiral blades since the original holders that came with the saw ONLY could hold pin end blades.

    • @ImaginethenMake
      @ImaginethenMake  Před měsícem

      Thanks for your question. Take another look at my video. Within the 1st minute, I show you who I bought my blade adaptors from. Here's a link to their website: www.pozsgaidesigns.com/page0006.htm . The Amazon link shows blade adaptors very similar to the one I bought. Some people prefer purchasing from Amazon because it is easy to do a return if you are not satisfied (FYI: you can do a free return to Amazon at your local Staples store.)
      Maybe I got lucky, but I have been very happy with the blade holders I bought. I originally bought them so I could try out using some spiral blades (which are pinless blades). Since installing them, I mostly use pinless blades now because there is a HUGE selection available. However, I still sometimes want to use a wide flat pinned blade so it is really nice to go back and forth between blade types; the switch over time is a couple minutes at most.
      I think it is worth noting that installing a flat blade is significantly different than installing a pinned blade. The pins in the pinned blade rest in the holder the same way every time. Since the flat blade doesn't have any pins it can be positioned in slightly different spots. A little practice and you'll come to know what I mean. Here's another video that demonstrates what I mean: czcams.com/video/phlTMNvvUXQ/video.htmlsi=nCt2f81agTfBbS1F .

    I bought my scroll saw about 2 years ago now and just followed the instructions. It told me to insert the blade with the teeth facing UPWARDS. Needless to say, I did struggle for a while until a friend popped round and told me to ignore that and turn the blade so the teeth face DOWNWARDS. Bloody hell, what a difference.
    Why do some manufacturers say to have the blade with the teeth facing UPWARDS. I have come across 2 manufacturers that give that advice in their assembly instructions. I just don't understand why. Any ideas.

    • @ImaginethenMake
      @ImaginethenMake  Před 3 lety +1

      You got me with that one Cliff. What kind of scroll saw do you have and who manufactured it?
      I have no idea why the manufacture of a scroll saw would recommend to install the blade with the teeth pointing upwards. Could it be a language translation error? I'm wondering if the saw is made overseas and the original manual is written in a language other than English, maybe when the manual got translated to English, "down" became "up"? Not sure.
      There are some scroll saw blades called reverse tooth blades where the last few teeth at the bottom of the blade are pointing upwards. But most of the teeth are pointed down. In this recent video of mine, I show this; here's the link if you are interested: czcams.com/video/Xlo1KHVKxgQ/video.html

Coping saw blades are about 6" long I believe and look very similar to pin end scroll saw blades (except they are longer). Hope this helps.

      Hi Max. I looked on the Ferm website ( ferm-diy.com/en/scroll-saw-120w.html ) and it looks like this scroll saw uses pin end scroll saw blades. I checked the Accessories page ( ferm-diy.com/en/accessories/sawing-accessories.html ) and looked at a couple of the scroll saw blades offered. They are pin end blades. The number of teeth is stated but the length of the blade is not stated. Interesting. I'm assuming that this saw uses standard 5" pin end scroll saw blades.
      I also downloaded the manual for the Ferm scroll saw ( ferm-diy.com/en/amfile/file/download/file/112/product/6112/ ) and I see that they also include adaptors for using pinless blades (see page 4 of the manual). Do your adaptors match what is shown in the manual?
      In the manual page 5, it says that the blade length is 125mm which is 4.921 inches.
      If you are missing the pinless blade adaptors, that might explain why the pinless blades seem too short.

    Okay that's how to install it but this video doesn't show the problem trying to load the blade when it's sticking through a 2 inch thick project piece of timber for internal cutting;; I can tell you it is very frustrating and trying to re-insert the round insert plate is almost impossible and you really need to leave the bottom cover plate off to make it a easier to place the lower clamp in place; This is a slight improvement over the supplied clamp mechanism but don't confuse this product with a quick release clamp because that it isn't by a long shot. My comments is in relation to installing a pinless blade and not the pin type. The pin type are realtively easy to install in the holder but the pin blade has severe restrictions on what you can do on a scroll saw. Would I buy it? Yes I would because anything is better than the crap that comes with these cheaper machines. I have one of these machines in which I only use it for pin blades and hava a DeWalt for pinless blades. If you arae going to be a serious scrollsaw user then pinless blades are the blades to use and for this you need a good machine and unfortunately they are quite expensive.

      Hi John. I agree, pinless blades are the way to go; there are many more choices for pinless blades than for pin end blades. I do still use pin end blades on occasion though.
      I think the thickest piece I have ever tried to cut through on a scroll saw has been a 1.5" thick 2x4 scrap piece. I was able to cut it but it was slow going. Plus, I was making an external cut (not internal) and I was using a pin end blade. Here's a link to that video if you are interested: czcams.com/video/fzkflN8jeyg/video.html . I cut the 2x4 at 23:22.
      If I were to try and make an internal cut on that same piece of 1.5" think scrap, I can see how fishing the blade up through the bottom could get frustrating. I would probably redesign my insert plate to make it easier to remove and install without having to fish the blade through that as well. Maybe I'll make a video about that (thanks for the idea!).
      Thanks for your comment and for watching.
