    I believe the coloured tape has been there since the start of the war to help more clearly identify who is on who’s side to avoid friendly fire situations. Almost like how people identify their teammates in a paintball match wearing coloured ribbons on their arms. On the topic of the yellow tape. Speaking from the perspective of someone who has never served in the army, but has played a lot of Arma 3. I think that when the enemies and your allies have similar equipment, then it is massively beneficial to be able to easily identify friendlies. The camouflage pattern still makes it difficult to be spotted at a distance, but when you're close enough to begin laying down accurate fire, the tape makes "blue on blue" incidences much less likely. Which also means one can more confidently engage non friendly forces without having to doubt if they're friendly, thereby reducing the time between spotting the enemy and engaging them.

    • @jrmckim

    I really think the other reason Chechens were so feared is that the average person doesn't think about the difference between an army and a "Death squad". They both can kill, but the death squads tend to only fight unarmed enemies. In that case, with all the badass gear and media coverage it's REALLY easy to look like something you aren't.

      The reason Russians fear Chechnyans is they got a brutal reputation in the two wars they fought against the Russian Federation, one they actually won.
      Even the Tik Tok general and his father fought against the Russian Federation before swapping sides and turning traitor to the Chechnyan people.
      Chechnya is still a powder keg of insurrection that is only stopped from exploding into full scale war by oppressive terror based dictatorship supported by Putin.
      As Putin's power and ability to support the murderous Tik Tok dictatorship, Chechnyans will once again fight for independence.

    • @nicklibby3784
      @nicklibby3784 Před rokem +5

      Yeah, it is the best time to rebel, especially if your rebellion is small and not a huge majority of people. Think of Chechnya or even Georgia for example. The Russians were able to send everything thry had militarily to those places because they had no other problems to worry about militarily.
      Imagine if Chechnya tried to secede during the Ukraine war instead OR even worse if the Ukraine war happened just before Chechnya tried to secede. It would be a huge distraction, it would simultaneously weaken the Russians on the Ukrainian front and Chechnyan front.
      Rebellion while your country is at war abroad is one of the best times to rebel...... unless it is a mass mobilization like ww2 where the entire economy has transitioned to a war economy and your country already has millions and millions of soldiers trained and ready to fight - then rebellion may even be harder unless you have generals and officers becoming a part of the rebellion then it can get very crazy when the military splits into 2. (Kinda like Russia in WW1 I guess.)

You might think "Well what if russians just wear yellow armbands too?" - in that case they risk to become targets of other russian unit and since it is a fast identification system their "allies" will not hesitate to shoot them on sight. You're 100% right about us Americans learning from this war. We're learning right now, which is one of the countless benefits of supporting Ukraine.
    Color-coded helmets and bands are essential when everyone wears the same style camouflage, similar helmets, armor, and weapons without force tracking or advanced communications. It's impossible to avoid blue-on-blue contact without something like a visual indicator.
    We used the Blue Force Tracking system back during my time in the US military (early 2000s), and I'm sure there is some more advanced version of it now. There was still contact between units, including allied nations. It's a real challenge, so the methods are always advancing.
    I believe using the small drones with cameras will help identify enemy units before making contact, as well as if they can watch and communicate positions to the ground units.

With night-vision, AR AI identification of targets, camouflage has become greatly less effective. So it's far more important to make sure your own team knows who you are so you don't get fragged. Camo works VERY well. Many times I’ve had people walk within meters of me without noticing. All depends on your camo pattern and local environment and positioning. However, when both armies engaged in a war are using very similar gear and uniforms, you have to have some sort of legal identification as a combatant so you are clear what side you’re on. This is easier when two sides have different gear and kit, not so easy when both sides use the same stuff. White stripes tend to be Russian, yellow/green are ukranian. Legally, they have to identify themselves if they aren’t wearing standard kit, which many ukranians are wearing a mishmatch of gear

You are doing a great job, and I don’t want to seem a mister know-it-all but I was a news-director for over 25 years and we found out that viewers will and do switch if the video becomes ‘staccato’.
