At the age of 53, I reckon I could take a holiday every year for the rest of my life in different parts of Wales and never go to the same place twice.

The sea has not moved, the land has risen. North Wales is still rebounding from the weight of all the ice during the last ice age. It's called post glacial or isostatic rebound.

@@torresalex No, it's not a silly question. Doggerland was taken out by a combination of isostatic adjustment and sea level rise post ice age. The final nail was a tsunami caused by the Storegga slide , where an estimated 3500 cubic kilometres of continental shelf slid off near Norway about 6000 years ago.

I spent a few summer holidays in Criccieth at the end of the 60's into the 70's and have been to Harlech a few times. I have some very special memories from that time around North Wales.

Thank you so much for this video which for me is a memory from when I lived in Harlech as a student 1967-8. I lived for several months at the top of the highest street and frequently walked down to the sea.

I really enjoy these videos, makes me sad I only visited Wales twice while living in the UK for 14 years. I saw Harlech as a school kid and still remember how impressive the castle was. Thanks for showing me how it looks now. I love the new bridge that has been built to the entrance.

My boyfriends (at the time) his family had (until recently) a cottage,down that steep hill near the castle. It was located opposite a grave yard. We use to visit the surrounding areas too, Port Maddock,Port Mirrian and Barmouth. I hope I've spent those names right. Aw memories

The very low walls on the parapets of this castle always make me nervous when visiting Harlech castle-particularly when walking around them with my 3 year son-A solid grip of the hand is required.Great little film👍

I really enjoyed this travelogue. There is an ultra marathon that finishes in Harlech and the medal is in the shape of the castle. Never knew anything about the area or castle that was until now.
Loved the cafe section also.

Thank you Carly! I've never been to Harlech, as well as many other Welsh places. And being somewhat corpulent, I don't think I could manage multiple stairs. I'd love to go there though, it really looks idyllic.
One place I have been, albeit many years ago, was Portmeirion. Sadly I didn't have the chance to visit the Blaenau Station or travel on the Ffestiniog Railway! 😞

Excellent video, I try and visit the Harlech beech every summer it's my favourite Welsh beech, cricceth is just up the coast and that has a beautiful castle and seafront, future video?

Diolch, Carly! That brought back some happy memories .... 50-odd years ago, Summer Schools at Coleg Harlech, run by the Welsh Association of Youth Clubs. Sadly, last time I visited, about 3 years ago, the Coleg was unused, unloved and becoming derelict.

Love all your videos. Helped us get to know mid wales in depth. You are very knowledgeable and fun and as we visited many of the places you have when we visited our daughter who is in her second year at Aber uni doing English lit. Take care of yourself and family and if you can talk your hubby to go to St David’s for a Visit a vlog would be amazing.

Your videos have inspired me to plan a little trip to Wales. I initially just wanted to take in some good driving roads inspired by the beautiful scenery I’m used to seeing in the background of Ian’s videos (although my aging Discovery is hardly a back road weapon!) but I’m feeling drawn to the lovely towns you’ve shown us round too. The trip is getting longer and longer!
I really hope you can find the time to do more of these in the future.

I visited Harlech - including the Castle and the steep road. I particularly enjoyed Devil's Bridge, the steps were just as perilous as they looked in your video! Aberystwyth was quite a quick stop while trying to fit everything in, but I had a lovely sit on the beach in the unseasonable warmth. It was beautiful. New Quay was great to pick up some lunch and a Mother's day gift!
Most of the trip was thanks to your videos. I am so grateful!
I also made sure to tick off some of the incredible driving roads and mountain passes which I've seen Ian driving on in past videos. I also visited Black Rock beach, stayed over in Llangollen and loads more. 640 miles door to door.
I put some pictures up on the HubNut Fans facebook page on Friday night.

ENF - (exceedingly nerdy footnote) - Dunedin, as in home of the southern hemisphere's steepest Street, takes it's name from Dyn Eidyn, the original Celtic name for Edinburgh from the time of Hen Ogleth and the Manau Goddodin - who originated (according to legend, at least) from what is now Gwynedd and northern Powys. But you probably know all that already. This entirely useless information has been brought to you by your friendly neighbourhood semi historical nerd. We now return you to something far more sensible.
Lovely video. Just the right length. It appears that the sea started to build up the land in front of the castle in the 14th century due to its location on the coast. Makes you wonder whether with rising sea levels, the castle might be next to the sea again in not too many years. Definitely worth a stop on any trip round Wales.

Really enjoyed this one Miss Hubnut, I have loved Harlech since I was a child, and my English Lit "o" level was Shakespeare's Henry the fifth. My mother bought me two books to read alongside the play, and I wonder if you know them, one is Cry God for Glendower and the other is Cry God for Harry. The were written by Martha Rofheart and are both a stunning read, if you haven't read them, highly recommend them, Harlech features very strongly. And may I, with the greatest respect dear lady, say that you are looking very trim and the jacket is great. Best wishes, looking forward to more Miss Hubnut videos.

The way you attempted the pronunciation of Dunedin caused me to look it up, since I recently discovered 'dun' means 'fort' in irish/Scottish Gaelic. For what it's worth, the name comes from Dùn Èideann.
This is the first 'Miss Hubnut' video I've watched, and I really have an urge to visit Wales now... it looks like such a beautiful place to visit. And I want some of that cake.

Last time we stayed in Wales was about 10 minutes from Harlech, really nice area with lots to see and do. I see someone else mentioned Theatr Ardudwy. We must've been some of relatively few who went to the cinema there in around 2016 (just before our eldest arrived) I remember seeing Star Trek as much for the setting as for the film! A properly unique place, sorry to see its currently closed! Thank you Miss Hubnut, spot on as usual 😁

Interesting video that obviously was going to focus on the castle, but I was surprised that you didn't show a scene including the statue of Bendigeidfran that's outside the castle.
I was a little disappointed that there was no mention of the former Coleg Harlech that was, between 1927 and 2017 Wales' only adult education residential college. I , and countless others studied at the college, and this meant that Harlech was home to me for the two years of my course between 1984 and 1986.
There is also Theatr Ardudwy. one of the few gems of Brutalist architecture that Wales possesses. Sadly now in private hands and currently disused. along with all the other buildings on the former Coleg Harlech campus. Many former former Coleg Harlech students and locals feel very let down by the Welsh Government that did very little to save this unique institution and the cultural asset that is the theatre that is the only such venue in the area.
Robert Graves spent some time in Harlech as his mother had a holiday home in the area. He writes about his stays in his 'Goodbye to All That'.

There's two reasons why Harlech is no longer prime seafront property ☺.
The bay silted up over the last centuries due to the silt etc deposited by the river forming a boggy marshland behind a sandbar that was created by shifting sands (longshore drift) across the bay and continued to dry out, v.common with shallow, large tide range bays and beaches. You only have to witness Porthmadog Bay at high and low tide to see this continuing today. This has been helped by the 'Island of Britain' tilting since the last ice age, the South is sinking and Scotland is rising. Eventually the current Thames barrier won't hold back the water and central London will be swimming. (I had a boat @ Porthmadog for over 15yrs, amazing what you learn talking to locals and other boat people over time ☺.)

So I once went to the old entrance gate at the bottom of one of the hill, and there was an old information placard that showed what they thought the view was like before the flat ground was reclaimed. So I do kinda believe that those old stairs were access to the sea. The new footbridge is cool though. This is the first of your videos that I’ve watched Miss Hubnut. It won’t be the last. Thanks. Fascinating video about Harlech. Perhaps you could ask your cameraman to lock the exposure on his camera as in the early shots the castle goes dark as he points the camera at the sky. Holding the camera still would also help rather than using the method of pointing the camera all over the place. I almost began to feel dizzy. 😵💫 😂

After we spit up they demolished st David's hotel where we used to go for drinks,darts and pool 🎱 in the bar area,we used to walk down the path next to the golf course near the beach and I think I got hit on the head by a golf ball.

After the battled the remaining Welsh soldiers feasted for seven years. Then they moved to the island of Gwales where they listened to the enchanted bird song of the birds of Rhiannon for eight years. Sadly one of the soldiers was inquisitive, opened a door and let the sadness in and his head died. Buried in London (Tower area) to ward off future attacks from the French.
