Exactly. We need to be able to compartmentalize and stop all the conflation. All things (and people too) need to be judged on their own merits - not unfairly measured against standards that don't fit or adhere to their own unique individual facets and features. There are all kinds of beauty in the world and when the mainstream masses limit that definition of beauty to a one-size-fits-all monolith, we are in serious trouble. "Fly Me Courageous" is the title track of the album by the same name. Atlanta based Drivin' N' Cryin' released the record in 1991 during the start the Persian Gulf War. It struck a patriotic chord with Americans at the time and lifted the band's 4th studio album to heights previously unseen. Perhaps some people didn't listen closely enough to the song though, because some of the lyrics seem to indicate opposition to some of America's foreign policies. Regardless of how you perceive the song, it still rocks and its all American. The imagery painted by the lyrics is epic and inspires bravado... "Wrap me high in the sky...Circle me with stallions...She flew from peak to peak...With the freedom of an eagle...So fly me courageous!"
I missed this song the first time around. No one else seems to be talking about it's use of the Icarus & Daedalus myth...maybe if I scrolled back far enough through the comments?
I have noticed the lyrics suggesting skepticism, to say the least, of American foreign policy, particularly this line, which opens the second verse: "Mother America is brandishing her weapons She keeps me safe and warm by threats and misconceptions." This may be yet another example of Springsteen syndrome (see "Born in the USA"), where a song critical of America's wars gets misunderstood as an expression of fervent patriotism.
I worked as a bouncer back in the day. I found it highly entertaining to deal with problems while this sort of thing banged its way out of the jukebox.
I've got you on the loose I left you groovin' I've got you on the beat I left you broken But won't you take my place Since long ago I wandered Way out on a cliff With the brilliance of an angel So fly me courageous So fly me courageous Mother America is brandishing Her weapons She keeps me safe and warm By threats and misconceptions So if you break the chains You'll have to shake me And if you break my heart You'll have to take me Whoa lady won't you take it easy Push me out of Whoa won't you take it easy lady Push me out of Whoa won't you take it easy lady Push me out of So fly me courageous I heard your whispers From the bottom of the canyon It's not so hard to hide The rattlesnakes confusion Wrap me high in the sky Circle me with stallions She flew from peak to peak With the freedom of an eagle So fly me courageous Fly me courageous So fly me courageous

Drivin' N Cryin' -Buren Fowler - Guitar ,Kevn Kinney -Guitar, Vocals Tim Nielsen - Bass, Mandolin, Vocals (Background) Jeff Sullivan - Drums, Percussion. Drivin' N' Cryin', : Fly Me Courageous is the fourth studio album by the Hard Rock/Southern Rock band Drivin' N' Cryin', released on January 8, 1991 by Island Records. The album is the band's most commercially successful release, in part due to the title track striking a patriotic chord with the United States during the start of the Persian Gulf War. In 1995, Fly Me Courageous was certified gold."Fly Me Courageous" reached #15 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.
I remember recording this onto a mixtape off the radio in like 91 or 92 , so many bands disappeared into the void of time. The 90s ruled , the last great decade of art, musical expression minus a corporate influence
Basic - Dec 89 ....don't forget the next line: Mother America is brandishing her weapons She keeps me safe and warm by threats and misconceptions Fascism and propaganda, deceit and murder .... let there be rule of law soon. Justice and liberty 4 all

I missed this song the first time around. No one else seems to be talking about it's use of the Icarus & Daedalus myth...maybe if I scrolled back far enough through the comments?
I have noticed the lyrics suggesting skepticism, to say the least, of American foreign policy, particularly this line, which opens the second verse:
"Mother America is brandishing her weapons
She keeps me safe and warm by threats and misconceptions."
This may be yet another example of Springsteen syndrome (see "Born in the USA"), where a song critical of America's wars gets misunderstood as an expression of fervent patriotism.
I think u didnt listen close enough...Its a great song but its GIBBERISH!
@@bilbobaggins4710what are u 14?
I was a bouncer in 94 at a pool hall this was on the CD jukebox awesome song another great is straight to hell same band
I worked as a bouncer back in the day. I found it highly entertaining to deal with problems while this sort of thing banged its way out of the jukebox.
I've got you on the loose
I left you groovin'
I've got you on the beat
I left you broken
But won't you take my place
Since long ago I wandered
Way out on a cliff
With the brilliance of an angel
So fly me courageous
So fly me courageous
Mother America is brandishing
Her weapons
She keeps me safe and warm
By threats and misconceptions
So if you break the chains
You'll have to shake me
And if you break my heart
You'll have to take me
Whoa lady won't you take it easy
Push me out of
Whoa won't you take it easy lady
Push me out of
Whoa won't you take it easy lady
Push me out of
So fly me courageous
I heard your whispers
From the bottom of the canyon
It's not so hard to hide
The rattlesnakes confusion
Wrap me high in the sky
Circle me with stallions
She flew from peak to peak
With the freedom of an eagle
So fly me courageous
Fly me courageous
So fly me courageous
Awesome thanks I used to make up my own lyrics to this back in 91 turns out I was really close!
Thanks!
@Becky & Gary Edwards Yes. It's absolutely an anti war/anti nationalism song.
Thanks for the lyrics I knew some of them luckily my local radio station didn't beat this one in the ground.
Whoaoo baby, woantchoo take it easy!!!
Went to school in WV many years ago, and became friends with a local kid that turned me onto this band as well as many others. Hope you are doing well Jaad M.
Excellent use of cowbell.
More cowbell pls...
Rattle snake, stallion and eagle all in one verse. Wow, big Richard energy
Awesome band! Highly underrated. One of the top '80s bands, IMO.
I remember exactly where I was when I heard this on the radio the first time for some reason. Some songs did that back then. I went and bought the CD. Still have it. Decent rock only had a few more years years of life after the time this came out. I'm so glad I was young in the 70's, 80's and half of the 90's. Best music ever....
I love this song. It can be a terrible day and this makes song turns it around and my day it gets better!
i still remember seeing this on mtv when it first came out.
Wow! I let this s cool tune slip out of my radar, it popped up randomly, excellent rockin' song !
Being a Georgia boy I absolutely hated this band at first! I heard this song and Build a Fire it changed my whole perspective!! Hell yeah!!
I had almost forgotten this song. Brings back so many memories.
gunjunky7520 yup...was running a random playlist here....they came up and I seen the band name....and I like...they play this song I remember...and this is it ....good song
They don’t make songs like this anymore 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Yes "they" do, you're just not listening to the right music.

Wow forgot all about this!!! Brings back alot of memories!!!
Garner.
And I'm 60! Peace out!
✌️🧐🙏🐐
First saw this on MTV’s 120 Minutes in late 1990, and was the first episode of it that I saw.
Drivin' N Cryin' -Buren Fowler - Guitar ,Kevn Kinney -Guitar, Vocals Tim Nielsen - Bass, Mandolin, Vocals (Background)
Jeff Sullivan - Drums, Percussion.
I remember seeing them so many times when I was in college at Ole Miss in the early 90’s. This brings back so many memories of them in the Grove.
I am so jealous! 😋😋😊
I really like this song. Me & my friend saw this band in milw, in 92 at an old theatre , The audience went crazy we had a blast ..
I remember recording this onto a mixtape off the radio in like 91 or 92 , so many bands disappeared into the void of time. The 90s ruled , the last great decade of art, musical expression minus a corporate influence
It's not the late 80's/early 90's hair metal without a half-naked girl slithering on something. Miss those days.
Was hoping someone could clear that up. As in, "Were Drivin' N' Cryin' a hair band, or an early grunge band?"
Neither. All of the critical stuff I've read says "jangle pop, country, & hard rock". Sounds right to me.
@@dz9589 Mud. Lol. Not clear, whatsoever, now. Thx
I call them alternative rock.
I still get going to it today and I'm 50
I remember this song from my Basic Training..."Mother America is brandishing her weapons..." Fuck Yeah! Still rocks my face off at 40+.
Yeah! It reminds me of Navy boot camp in Orlando! I was there at the end of '91.
C School in Pensacola- Corry station when this hit the air. I love me some P-Cola...
Basic - Dec 89 ....don't forget the next line:
Mother America is brandishing her weapons
She keeps me safe and warm by threats and misconceptions
Fascism and propaganda, deceit and murder .... let there be rule of law soon.
Justice and liberty 4 all
nowonyuno
That's a great song.
she keeps me safe and warm, with threats and misconceptions. you can't take half the line Tiffany. still a great tune-
This is southern rock at its' best!!!
First time I heard this tune on the radio in 1991 I was stoned... I was blown away... Loved it ever since.
Just bc you get stoned does not mean you don't love America, justice, your kids, and the right to bear arms
Or the right to share that "blown away" experience
Holy shit! I didn't know this was Drivin' n' Cryin'... awesome song!
Love it…my life was so much simpler when this came out.
omg!!! I was in several cover bands in the 90s and EVERY SINGLE ONE played this song!!!!
Saw these guys open for R.E.M. 89-90, went out the next day and bought everything they had out at the time. Still a huge fan.
WHEN I PLAY THIS SONG..MY NEIGHBORS LOVE IT LOUD AS MUCH AS I DO
Loved this song when it came out and still listen to it today.LONG LIVE DRIVING AND CRYING.
Tom Wolak that's right
I just had to listen to this song this evening. I love it!
Hi Tammy,hope you’re okay ?
This song is so in between 80,s hair and 90,s alternative! I love it!
Flying courageous in 2019 into 2020!!
the local bar/bull riding venue here always plays this when one of the riders manages the 8 second ride
@ stephy Yeah, that was some deep stuff right there. Profound.
I was in college at Ole Miss in the early 90's and this band used to play in a local bar then I loved it!!
I'll be drivin and cryin til I die.
Love this song. I just heard it for the first time on iheartradio. Oldie but a goody!
Definitely one of the most incredible songs from the magical days of intense memories and incredible musicians
STILL AND ALWAYZ ROKKIN THIS AND THE BAND
Still rockin this one in 2023 🎸
2024🎉 Have loved them since 1989 Ga Southern University
Great song that I recently thought of and looked up. Just ordered the album.
This band was just before the big move to modern rock via the grunge scene.
