I bought mine a few weeks ago, and have attached it to the Rola Titan Mk2 1800x1200 tray. I did have the 1500x1200 tray but had to upgrade to the 1800 tray for this to fit. (Found it for $649 at supercheap)
Install did require the help of a mate as well. Definitely, the install of it onto a platform tray has helped with the rigidity of it, and i don't get the flex like you do, in your video.
I've also bought the walls for it as well, as the Malaga store had an in store special of 2 walls and the 270 mesh floor for $248.
Great video btw, and also a great comparison between the 2 types

That clamp you're referring to, that's attached to the tensioning strap is called a "cam buckle". I have the Rhino-Rack Batwing and it's mounted on a mesh roof rack like yours. I used the round cross bars of my roof rack to mount my awning brackets to, using U bolts (2 per brackets). It's been mounted like that for nearly 4 years now and it hasn't budged, even on heavy corrugated tracks. And late last year, I added a set of RacksBrax on the brackets. Allowing me to completely remove the awning from the vehicle when I know I wouldn't be needing it. The same for my shower awning.

I have the Tourer X on my car as well (rooftop tent) and the brackets weren't compatible at all.
I ended up having to move the tent off centre so it opened without hitting the awning, and also get 3 brackets from Bunnings, rated 50kgs each, that would fit under the tent. Bit of flex on those brackets, but it does the job.
Recently bought the awning walls to go with it. The weight of all 4 walls bends the brackets a fair bit so I have a tent pole under one of the awning arms to hold it up.

I have one as well, install was a bit tedious, but all good, not sure about your math though, first one was 16kg or so and the new one is 28kgs or so, that only a1/3rd heavier (33%) , and problem with your first one can easliy be fixed by just moving your arms closer together as you don't need to hold the very end of the awning arm to click the leg in place, you could have just been holding half way?

  • @beardmoto
    @beardmoto Pƙed rokem +2

I've got one of the Ocam flat racks on my GQ, and Bushwakka 270 awning.
Best way to secure them is to the round tube work of the rack, not to the mesh.
I replaced the L bracked with ones from The Bush Company (mate had some spares kicking around he didn't need) as they are wider.
Run a couple of gal U bolts from bunnings under the tube, with the threads facing up and sit the bracket over the top, and secure the nuts.
Solid as a rock, it'll peel the rack off the gutters before the mounting breaks.

I always worry about breakage in high winds and heavy precip. Seems like they're built to break when you need them the most, even the nicer ones. Open quick, like a parasol, if you're lunching in the middle of summer. That's a nice feature. Same for a light rain without too much wind.
But I need to see more reviews under harsher conditions.
Been thinking about a half of a Quonset hut, i.e., a quarter cylinder with a simple tarp with some loops sewn in to hold the ribs in place. Basically make a covered tunnel.

thanks for this review. I just got one of these and I am about to install it on my steel roof rack similar to yours. How did you go with the support. stay strong through the mesh or you added an extra plate underneath for an extra support. What about the awning in a rainy day. Does it do the job... any leaks or water passing through the awning ... I mean is it water proof or not really? thanks in advance for the reply.

The 1st lasted not even a year so Im thinking it was cheap entry level stuff so bought the grandtourer clamshell because of ease in which to set up. That 2.5 k I paid seriously I woulda been better to throw the money away. Never again will I personally pay kings another dime. Of everything I ever bought the only thing that still works is the 60ltr fridge which has never been turned off and has been flawless in the 5 yrs Ive had it but then I'm told they were a rebranded waeco. I dont regret buying their gear but the biggest lesson was me scrimping on the coin rather than purchase more reputable gear allbeit for a more peace of mind. Oh well lesson learnt.
