  • I'm Donnalouise - a puzzled puzzler puzzling puzzles who's trying PUZZLE CHESS for the first time. I faced off head-to-head against Wendy in an individual round. I also teamed up with my hubby Kelly against Paige and Sven for pairs. What are your thoughts on puzzle chess? Would you like to see it at competitions? What do you think of the "shuffle pieces" or "passing to your partner" options? It'll be interesting to see how this game evolves.

    Donnalouise! The room you’re in when you’re playing with Wendy that is an amazing spot. Really great light and really nice to look at comfortable looking. And containers stacked up in the corner everything is nice and neat! you should film in there that’s an amazing space.😁😁😁 This is the best chess jigsaw puzzle game video I’ve seen!

      This is actually quite a small room which I now use for my live-streaming. It does have really good lighting but not enough space to film comfortably for long puzzling periods of time, and no room for bigger puzzles. I'm live-streaming this coming weekend though and it works perfect in there. Glad you enjoyed!!!

      So pleased you enjoyed! One more thing that I learned recently was that in actual chess, you have to tap your clock with the hand that you used to move your piece. So that is a rule that I now apply to puzzle chess. So you can't just put in a piece with one hand and have the other ready to tap the clock as soon as you place, you need to use the same hand. 💜🧩

    One easy way to spice up the game while making it more playable for players of different levels would be to add dices with the following rules: each player must place the number of pieces equal to the difference between the two dices. E.g. 5 and 3 means 2 pieces, 4 and 4 means 0 or skipped turn and double six means swap places and get your opponent's time. This game has a lot of potential for fun new rules.

      It really does - so many ways tot spice it up and your suggestions are great. I've loved all the comments on this video - so many great ideas. I want a proper Puzzle Chess clock app in which you could incorporate all these ideas. Like it tells you how many pieces to put in, or triggers something to happen every 5 mins - swap seats, rotate puzzle, shuffle pieces. So much potential!!! Someone should jump on all these great ideas... 💜🧩

    That was a brilliant video Donnalouise. I’m glad you did both solo and team chess - I wasn’t able to do the team chess, so I never really had the chance to test out any pros and cons about it. I honestly think not being able to confer is a little silly with team puzzle chess. If you can’t talk at all I’m not really sure I see the point of having a team situation at all. Maybe there’s something I’m missing?
    I definitely think if it’s not being played competitively and you’re just at home playing, like any game it should be fun. So changing it to confer or altering the rules a little is a good idea in that instance. I like that it is flexible enough to be altered though, there are all sorts you could do - the shuffle idea was a good one, or having 3 chances to swap turns. I came up with an idea to make it really crazy, so you have maybe 3 items you can use to distract the other player, and use them at your discretion, like blowing a horn or something 🤣.

    Love it and so great to see Wendy back and also your other friends! I thought Kelly's ideas were good, you could even have it so that at particular times eg 5 mins, 10 mins you throw a dice and depending on who gets the highest score or else there could be cards for each dice score, it could be mix the pieces as Kelly said or turn the puzzle around or teams swap seats with the others or add 1 min to their clock etc. There should definitely be a couple of chits so partners can take the turn or someone can pass a turn. For an expert level, some extra pieces that look similar could be mixed in with the rest as decoys!

      Love all the ideas!! Rotating the puzzle, swapping chairs, adding time to the clock... We need someone to code a specific Puzzle Chess clock with all these options incorporated. • @LogicMasterSteve
    @LogicMasterSteve Před rokem +1

    Enjoyable guest appearance of Wendy - as always. 🙂
    For the rule variations: For competitions I think the rules are fine. Allowing skipping to your partner could lead to situations that one very strong player wins a game for his/her team almost on his/her own. Of course the time penalty could be large (15 seconds?) so you would only use it in desperate situations... :-)
    For friendly, familiar encounters, however, house rules might surely be advisable. If the previous puzzling experience is very different it can become so frustrating for the less-experienced player since your playing partner might be planning ahead 5 pieces and so it feels like it is always your turn to move - whereas your opponent seems not to think at all (he/she thinks on your turn, of course :-).
    Handicaps like in golf would be great (you might then even use it in "handicap tournaments"). But surely setting the handicap correctly is hugely difficult since the handicap must consider piece count and probably even should consider the difficulty of the puzzle image, the latter judgement being impossible. If a sprint game will finish after both players only having used 3 minutes or whether a long game is a battle of whoever will time out the opponent (because the puzzle will not be finished within 30 minutes) - that makes a big difference for setting "correct" handicaps ...

    • @fortheloveofpuzzles
      @fortheloveofpuzzles  Před rokem +1

      It would be tricky to determine one's handicap but I think Wendy was a bit harsh - 5 pieces for me to every 1 for someone else. Hehehehe I can't wait to see how this game involves. I believe they will be having it at the Spain National competition in June. I'm hoping I can get some games in while Spain with @janetteandherpuzzles, @jigsawjubie and @Vickymakesandbuilds. I know we will be focusing on speed puzzling but perhaps some puzzle chess to unwinde. 💜🧩

    One easy little disadvantage you could use it to put the jigsaw the right way up in front of the weaker person and the stronger person has to do it upside down. What bothers me is that if the other person is slower you have a lot of time to try to work out which piece would be easy to put in and then the other person has immediately another turn and has no time to work out which piece would be easy while it is not her turn.

    • @fortheloveofpuzzles
      @fortheloveofpuzzles  Před rokem +1

      Kelly did say that he didn't like the angle he was viewing the puzzle and the box - our first game they were flipped but them our second game they were the same direction up. But yeah, that would be a good way to make it easier for one player is to have it right-side up for them and upside-down for the other. And yes I agree, if a player is taking a longer time, it gives the other time to find pieces and make a plan. I could keep at least 5 pieces in memory. Kelly's shuffle the pieces idea would definitely reset that. 💜🧩

  • @puzzlinghappiness
    @puzzlinghappiness Před rokem +1

    Wow, you had so many good ideas!! ❤️ I really like the more social pair version where you have to work together as a team!! ❤️❤️❤️ That would be the ideal co-operative "boardgame" that I've been looking for! 😄
    Also the other ideas like the shuffle were really great! Actually I might even suggest that there would be a shuffle after EVERY turn, because here's my main concern with this game: when you are waiting for the other one to find a piece, you have plenty of time to look at the pieces and make plans. And when you place a piece it takes only a few seconds - and then it's again the turn of the opponent! (Who might be struggling) Another option for shuffling would be that you are not allowed to look at the pieces when it's not your turn... I don't know. But something should be done if the players are not exactly on the same level, because this definitely rewards the better player.

    • @fortheloveofpuzzles
      @fortheloveofpuzzles  Před rokem +1

      I agree when playing just for fun and with non-puzzlers, you need to amend the rules as one person get way too much of an advantage and that would be discouraging for the other player. There are many options for rule variations though that could be applied. I can’t wait to see how this game develops. You and your hubby have to give it a try. 💜🧩

It was awful! I don't want to argue playing games. 😁 I am just doing a 500 piece from Eurographics, "Cobble Walk Cottage."
