Messi se ha llevado el preciado galardón con una diferencia mínima, con un 22,65% de los votos, sólo cinco puntos por encima de Iniesta (17,36%) y seis por encima de Xavi (16,48%), los otros dos ganadores de la noche. Ha sido, según ha reconocido el propio Leo Messi, una victoria inesperada.
Y es que la jornada se ha vivido con mucha emoción: hace un mes el rotativo italiano 'La Gazzetta dello Sport' publicó que el ganador sería Iniesta, pero durante toda la jornada de este lunes se había apuntado la posibilidad de que Xavi acabaría siendo el ganador. Nadie apostaba realmente por Messi, que ha superado el hándicap de no haber ganado el Mundial. Hasta ahora, ningún ganador del FIFA World Player se había llevado el galardón en un año de Mundial sin haber ganado éste.
Leo Messi, ganador del Balón de Oro y del FIFA World Player en 2009, se ha coronado en Zúrich como un futbolista de época. Es el noveno que levanta dos Balones de Oro después de Cruyff, Van Basten, Platini, Beckenbauer, Keegan, Ronaldo, Rummenigge y Di Stéfano y el más joven en conseguirlo. Hacía más de 20 años, desde que Van Basten lo hizo en 1989, que ningún futbolista ganaba el trofeo dos años consecutivos.
El triplete azulgrana en Zúrich supone la coronación absoluta de una forma de entender el fútbol: el que nace en la Masía y se hace grande en el Camp Nou. Son los casos de Messi, Iniesta y Xavi, pero también los de Piqué o Puyol, jugadores que, como Villa, han sido incluidos en el once ideal de FIFPro. The Argentinean picked up the award, given by FIFA and the France Football magazine this evening in Zurich after his boss Pep Guardiol announced "Ladies and gentleman, the winner is... Lionel Messi!", confirmation, if needed that Messi is simply the best -- something Xavi and Iniesta both admitted before the ceremony.
Messi took the award with the minimum difference, getting 22,65% of the votes, just five points more than Iniesta(17,36%) and six more than Xavi (16,48%) and even for Leo himself the win came as a big surprise.
It's been a thrilling and exciting day; after 'La Gazzetta dello Sport' published last month that the award was going to Iniesta, there was plenty of speculation all day that it would be Xavi who was going to win, with hardly any commentators going for Messi. The Argentinean's win is all the more remarkable given his country's poor showing in South Africa and the fact that until now, no FIFA World Player of the Year award had gone to a player in a World Cup year, who'd not won that trophy.
Leo Messi's win marks him out as an epoch defining player, joining greats such as Cruyff, Van Basten, Platini, Beckenbauer, Keegan, Ronaldo, Rummenigge and Di Stéfano in taking more than one Ballon D'Or and becoming the youngest to have done so. It is more than 20 years since the last player -Van Basten took the trophy two years on the run.
The three Barça players appearance in the final of the award marked the confirmation of Barça's trademark style, born out of La Masia and perfected on the Nou Camp pitch. The only argument that people say when they say that messi stole the ballon dor from sneijder is that he won the treble and he was a world cup subchampion, but what they dont understand is that titles are collective achievements sneijder didnt won all of that by himself he was a key man for his club and country but he wasnt alone. Messi scored 0 goals in the 2010 WC and so he didn't deserve the Ballon d'Or. Messi was also unimpressive in the Champions League, dissappearing against Inter in the semifinal. On the other hand, both Iniesta and Sneijder deserved more the award. Iniesta won the World Cup and was key for Spain with his majestic performances both in the final and the entire tournament. Sneijder won the "triplete" (including eliminating the Barca of Messi in the SF) and reached the WC final. Also, Sneijder almost gave the definitive assist to Robben, but Casillas "El Santo" did a miracle.

Messi was by far the best player during the year, not only by stats, but with his performances. Sneijder was great, but he was not a key element that make the difference, he was a very good player that had the luck to be on the team who won the treble.
Messi was just far above the rest, he showed to the world by scoring the most goals in the year, making absolute magnificent performances like when he scored 4 goals against Arsenal, and more. Against Inter he did not dissapear, he played well, but obviously it was difficult for him to play against a team that defended so locked up behind.
And if we talk about spanish players, cause they won the WC, ironically Iniesta had a bad year. He was constantly injuried, at the point that he missed important games like the semifinals against Inter. Even he even said that after the WC he went through a depression. I mean, he still was one of the best without a doubt, but his year was very irregular to give him the Ballon d'Or.
Tbh Messi was just so much better than the rest, and his WC performance is way underrated cause he didn't score any goals. That is not his fault, because Argentina played below expectations basically cause Maradona was not good enough as a manager.

Para mí era mejor cuando daban dos premios, porque de ese modo la inevitable injusticia de destacar sólo a un jugador se mitigaba en cierto modo. No entiendo esta fiebre por unificarlo y concentrarlo todo. Por otra parte, es maravillosa la timidez de Leo Messi con la prensa, saliendo lo menos posible, sin darles carnaza y demostrando que el fútbol se hace en el campo y sólo allí.

Yo creo que ninguno puede justificar este balón de oro de este año (2010), porque el balón de oro no tiene como requisito ser el mejor jugando con una pelota, sino tiene otros, el cual no incluyen ese. Por lo tanto, Messi puede ser el quizá el mejor del mundo o bien, de la historia, pero hay ciertas injusticias que se han cometido a lo largo de esta gala y premio.
