Hey James, I planted the washie you gave to me last June in Wasaga Beach. It survived the winter. In fact, it had issues before I wrapped it up for the winter. When I unwrapped it this spring, it was really healthy! Strange thing happened, however, as it started to die back fast. I think it's because we got to -3 on consecutive nights in April. I did the aggressive cut back and hoped for the best. Within a week, a new spear started to push, and it is on its way to recovery. I think the lesson learned was not to unwrap fully until night temps are consistently above --1 or 0 until the plant is established.
@@Rocketman0407 come on, of course Iam sure. They don't know anything. The point is precisely to stress the palm & force it to react. Stress = performance. The first 4 leaves are not Washingtonia. The 5th is 50% Washingtonia. The 6th leaf is 100% Washingtonia. So by cutting, the palm has to be larger earlier to handle a full Washingtonia leaf. For bigger models , let them have 3 leaves maximum. It grows a new leaf? Take out an old one. The palm will be on fire.
My California fan palm seeds are growing nicely!
And my washies from Thailand are growing very fast
My washingtonia is taking its time but its growing..You have inspired me to document my landscping learning journey on CZcams...Great stuff!

You should do update next year. 😉
Sweet James I'm thinking about planting my Washi in the ground in Oklahoma will it do good with the cold?
Yeah for sure
Where in Oklahoma? You will definitely need an active heat source and wrapping it in winter. Think you can get away with not boxing it in down there.

Hey do you trim the leaves off the Washingtonians every year? I boxed mines up after the winter in Georgia.
This is the second time youve done in ground planting in canada outside ur house, is the one u planted at ur moms still doin good?
No, it’s in a pot because I did not want to protect it
Hey you want them to grow faster, you need to cut leaves. I saw you never do it. Specially when they are small. I got 25000 filifera in production.
Are you sure? I have always heard it does nothing other than stress it and Rob nutrients from the tree
