  • In this home video we farewell and capture some of the final workings of the American Locomotive Company 44 class on the Southern Highlands: 4456, 4458 and 4486.
In less then 2 weeks of filming, the remaining 44 class in traffic would be withdrawn from service.
The 44 class were introduced to traffic from 1957 to 1967, withdrawn from government service in July 1994. Since this film was taken, few members of the class have survived in preservation and freight working, including 4458 and 4486. As of 2024, 4497 remains the only active member of its class dedicated to freight working.
Just days from returning home filming the earlier BorderLoop segment, still languishing in disappoint at the complete withdrawal of 44 class from the main north, an evening and day was spent capturing the final movements of the class in this transition period of motive power and freight train operators.
Witness the chasing of 4458 and 4486 hauling a Medway to Berrima return limestone train. The unique DELEC Enfield paint scheme applied to 4458 was a favourite of mine and I am delighted to share this short film with you on its 30th anniversary.

I chuckle when I see that the 44 class was considered obsolete and slated for withdrawal in 1994. I live in Junee, where the last one in commercial service still gets around, thirty years later.

great video ! it sure is refreshing to see all these trains without a trace of grafitti, that only a decade later would cover the train world. Love these engines that reminds a lot of the american alcos like PAs and Fas. thanks !

Standing on the running line (6:49) with tripod in the four foot, no PPE and probably no RISI card, what one got away with in the good old days eh? Great video, but was hoping it would be chockers with "44" class, as the title suggests. The blue and yellow looked nice when kept clean on 4458.

So where's the footage of the 44 class, first seven minutes only two 44's in the dark.

Australian trains (the whole trains) are the most generic trains ever.
