Late 1970s - Picton & Loop Line shuttles
Bert Scales Rail Archive. Cine Film digitally transferred to HD via Storm Video Gladesville. Sound Dubbed over. Digitally enhanced via Topaz.
Dates and details unknown. This footage was found in the bottom of a bag containing 'rejected' films which Bert believed not good enough to be spliced onto a larger reel and shared for viewing. On review and upscale of this footage, i believe Bert to be wrong.
Some great old footage of a time I assume was late 1970s (1978/79) post the NSW Rail Transport Museum move from Enfield to Thirlmere.
Any comments appreciated.

Stay Tuned to this channel during the month of July. July 1994 saw the last and first of many changes to the NSW railway: early era ALCO's and loco hauled passenger trains were relegated to the confines of history books, and Freight Rail's ready power by the hour was in full swing with delivery and enter into traffic of 82 and 90 class locomotives.

Great memories here, but at a guess I'd say this was very early 1980s. I remember riding on 3137 many times as a kid back then (I'm 50 now), the two Tuscan and Russet end-platform cars, 3642 doing Loop Line duties occasionally, as well as 3214, 5461, 1243, 1709 (as 381), and 3001 and 5910 return to service. I remember one time when 3137 took the "through train" all the way back to Sydney!

To provide access for passengers whom wished to alight on the East Hills line. In the 1990s Padstow station competed with Riverwood station to host fame of being the busiest station on the East Hills line. Padstow was a transport hub, and the commuter station for residents of the then recently opened housing suburbs of Alford Point and Menai. This all changed in 2008 with the opening of the quadruplication from Turella through to Revesby.

The whole decade was one of change from the cessation of overnight sleeper services to Brisbane and the Tweed, the City Rail 'station sparkle' program starting at Lewisham and St. Peters at the start of 1990. Vigorous track and signal upgrading programs coupled with the advent of National Rail in 1991, the eventual closure of Cardiff, Broadmeadow and later DELEC locomotive depots, One-Spot Wagon Maintenence at Wollongong, Outer Suburban Tangaras and private operators bringing back various members of the 47 class on metropolitan workings. But the Macquarie Rail Link that began in November 2002 and later went on to become the Sydney Metro System doesn't count. That was obviously a whole different chapter.

Ahhh, the days as a kid you could go to a locomotive maintenance depot and ask for permission walk around and even go into a loco. The 80's were great. Went to Mayne and even walked around Redbank workshops as a kid in Queensland. The OIC trusted us not being idiots and signed a methylated spirit indemnity (probably not worth the paper that it was written on). It is a shame too many idiots wrecked it and then safety enforcement kicked off hard, because the lowest common denominator decided to sue business and government. Ah well they achieved a much more safer place which is a good thing, but lost the close up interaction with people doing their work. Such is life.

19:52 It is confusing when what is clearly an interstate Brisbane to Sydney National Rail superfreighter service getting tagged as a Newcastle service albeit considering that services just like it are crewed by single or double 81 class locos. That will end when 86 class electric working from to and from Broadmeadow Depot is abolished in favor of through working when National Rail crewing begins on the Sydney-Brisbane corridor on July 25 1994 or a few days following that. The Candy and Freight Rail Blue 81 class started working this route from June using SRA drivers apparently. There were also National Rail Seatrain landbridge services that started from Port Botany to Acacia Ridge in June 1994 with none of the SPD/TNT stuff unless it was picked up and attached at the TNT Contrans depot at Sydenham near Marrickville.
