[Have you ever experienced performance anxiety? Do your nerves tend to overtake you before any big sporting event or other public performance?
Many people are challenged with debilitating performance anxiety, and one of our listeners recently wrote in to ask that we cover a special episode on the topic. So, today we’ll be discussing some powerful tools to help you rid yourself of the nerves and bring your performance to a whole new level!
Now, for those of you who may be thinking that a sports discussion really isn’t for you, hold tight-the tools we use to combat performance anxiety can also be used for combatting difficulties with things like public speaking and voicing your opinions effectively at work.
No matter what anxiety issues you may be experiencing in public, you will probably benefit from this discussion.
So, what’s the big deal about “game day” anyway? Why do we let ourselves get so worked up about it? Instinctively, we understand what it is that makes us so nervous, but it can be hard to put it into words. As a teenager, I remember dreading game day: events were scheduled during the day, as opposed to the evenings when we practiced, which felt awkward to me physically; and the coaches and other players would get so worked up that they’d be yelling at each other (and me) aggressively, which felt awful to me mentally and emotionally. When we take an objective glance at this scenario, it’s not hard to grasp what would cause it to be anxiety-inducing for most people.
All of the obstacles above ultimately point to one thing: approval anxiety.]

What the hell they should teach life like this in school
Right?!
I recently had a really bad practice when trying out for a higher level team. I got tense, nervous, and started to make some big mistakes. When this happened I became worried about what the coach and team members would think about me. After watching this video it really help me to understand wanting approval of other people and how to use reverse visualization. This video has helped reduce my anxiety. Thanks!
That is so awesome Molly!
This is so good!!! I was watching to help my daughter, it has helped me as her mum
I’m mostly afraid of teammates judging me and yelling at me for messing up. Or making fun of me because of my size and strength. But this video really helped me! Like you said, it is all just the game and not the complete end of the world.
So true! Everyone makes mistakes, everyone has failures. It's a normal part of life.
what you fear you attract! that's what you trying to say!
I was nervous before a baseball tryout I had and then I watched this and I made the 14AAA Team. (The best) it really helped me overcome fear. Thank You!!!💪👍🙏
That's fantastic, congratulations!

I trust you prevailed?

I know it's been a while... but how did you do?
@@imarley3375 We went in the quarter final, still got kinda anxiety. This result is acceptable.Focusing on the game instead of thinking too much is really crucial.
Self judgment is worst. I am way too hard on my self, I don't care that much od judgment of others tho.., hate that feeling that comes on (anxiety) of performance failure..
Agreed!
I am experiencing the same thing rn
@@DatboyAB21 listen to Marcus Aurelius writings and stoic quotes in general. It helps.

3:00 minutes in and I’ve already shed a tear because I’ve never thought of performance anxiety as approval anxiety. But it makes so much sense I want so badly to make my family proud and gain there approval. I think if I can get over this anxiety I can reach the next level. Thanks so much this has really helped me
That's so awesome to hear!
Been struggling with this for a while, I always lose the race before it has even started. Thank you so much!
You're very welcome!
After having a coach that discouraged her players regularly, I have been struggling to regain my confidence in playing lacrosse. I'm a really good player when I'm practicing in my backyard, however, when it's time for practice with my new team I get anxious because I want to prove myself to my new coach. I came upon this video and found it extremely useful! I hope to use these tips before my next practice.
Awesome, Emelia!
I can feel you it's the same way for me but w/ basketball
I now watch this video every day before a big football game/scrimmage. Thank you so much, my life is easier to handle because of your words of wisdom!
Awesome my friend!
My anxiety has been getting so bad even going to practice this helped me so much
Awesome to hear!
This video has helped me massively. I’ve always struggled to bring my A game to snooker matches, no matter how well I play i practice. I’ve visualised my nightmare scenario, accepted it doesn’t change me, now I bring my practice game to the match table. Brilliant!
glad i watched this, i play basketball and my anxiety takes me to the point where I feel like I can't dribble and my shoot feels all weird.
Let me know if it helps!
This really helped a lot man. I’m a sophomore playing on varsity football because of my size. I was really freaking out about games to the point where I couldn’t breathe before them. I only have 2 more months until it’s done. Thank god
Glad it was helpful!
I am Usually A good Receiver In Volleyball , but nowadays I can't Receive properly And I Am Scared that This will continue Forever And I will Not be able to receive Anymore and Someone will take away my Position , first When I used To Receive I had the confidence That The ball will go Perfectly to the setter but now When the Ball comes to me I can't Imagine That And Mess up everytime😭😭😭😭😭
@@tommyshelby8119 same. But with hitting I have a game today and I am anxious
@@zariaqueen1398 Hey Do u watch Haikyuu btw
@@tommyshelby8119 yeah, I only was able to watch the first few seasons tho
This really helped. My friends say when I play I have a look on the face of clueless because I don't want the ball because I'm afraid I'm gonna miss or let my teammates down or get criticized but this video told me that I gotta believe in myself and trashtalk can help because that can get in your opponents head
True!
Trash talk only shows the fear, to people like me (experienced).
As a youngster i had trouble calming myself doing athletics, before i race my guts would just drop lol it was awful and i remember once before a long jump final i was real nervous and my first jump my legs didnt work, i ran head first into the sand! everyone laughed at me in the stand and the other athletes :( in football (soccer) i didnt struggle as bad as i saw it as a team game, but tennis, athletics etc where its all on you the pressure got to me. Anyone struggling with this please tackle it head on, do whatever it takes to beat it, as it can ruin potential careers if you let it
Thank you for sharing.
I love that you used soccer as your main focus because that is exactly why i came here. When you said "Performance anxiety is approval anxiety," I really felt that and it made me realize my problem. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
Wow that reverse visualization is fuckin incredible. I feel so much better I have the biggest fight of my life coming up. This made me feel so much more comfortable than I already am thank you
When I practise soccer, i juggle well, i have good control and overall average physique. But in match I just get locked when confronting a player, I'll try your techniques next time before the match.
I played a lot of soccer as a young adult, so I can relate. Try the techniques and let me know your progress!
Me too
Did they help?
Yes Genos, but what helped me more was just playing more matches, experience has no substitute.
3 years ago, i developped performance anxiety at work. it transformed into depression. I got back on my feet... but this year, performance anxiety came back in another context : coaching a boys soccer team. I fear not being good enough for them, for the parents, for the "directeur technique"..... i really got to practise this reverse-visualisation thing. thanks!
Awesome Coach Pete!
You hit the nail on the head and you're probably not even aware how many people appreciate this. In my case, I used to over-analyze everything and be worried about the outcome. The more I did it, the more I would mess up. It was a clear signal that even if I "care" it doesn't help. Then I realized that there are times when even the best players in our league have a bad day and that's exactly what everybody thinks - just a bad day and a bit of bad luck. Nobody, not even their teammates think that they are losers or anything of that sort. Nowadays I just turn up and execute things that I executed thousands of times. It might not always be enough but that's sport. The irony is that being somewhat indifferent also has a psychological effect on the opponent.
after all these years of constant fear i finally find this video to help me be consistent, thank you
So glad it helped!
are you more consistent now?
I usually never comment but I felt like I need to for this video. Thank you so much man. I don't think you understand how much this video has changed my life. I suffer from preformance anxiety and this has been incredible. From then bottom of my heart, thanks.
I'm so grateful to hear this, congratulations!
I really wanna play volleyball but my anxiety in general is so so bad, I shake so bad and I almost fainted once. I’m trying to get over it because I actually wannna have fun and don’t wanna regret anything
Perhaps you could approach the coach of the volleyball team you which to play on and ask for his or her help with this. Many coaches have been very helpful to others like yourself who needed help with this issue.
Hey, man just want to say that this video deserves a lot more views than 3,500. Keep up the good work man this really has helped me get a better perspective on my performance anxiety.

I'm running in my first 5K on Saturday and I am freaking out about it. This video is helping me to drill down to why - the expectations I've put on myself- and not achieving them. I just really want to have fun. Thank you for this video.
You bet. Try to relax and just enjoy the challenge!
I don't ever comment on videos, but you my sir just have this convincing and well... Confidence that makes me believe in you. I hope this can work for me since I always sprint faster in my practices, and then get so intimidated in my meets that I run slower...much slower
Ah yes, performance anxiety, I know it well. :) Yes, you can tame it, keep working on it!
This video really related to me I am currently struggling in softball I am a pitcher and I not throwing well at all during games but i do usually good at practice. I will definitely try things from this video as I have been researching nonstop trying to understand why I am performing the way I am. This video was literally word for word how I am struggling right now and these ideas will help me I believe!
That's so awesome! Keep at it, and with that attitude you will surely succeed. :)
My daughter is an 11 year old boxer. She's won regional championships and has tremendous skill but has struggled at the elite level. Her anxiety runs high and her negative thoughts take over to the point where she is almost frozen before her matches. Going to try this Reverse Visualization starting today. Thank you so much for this video.
You're very welcome, please let me know how things go.
@@GetMoreConfidence We have been working reverse visiuilization with her for a few weeks before we competed in our last national tournament. She got a little panic attack before going up against #5 in the nation. We were down on the cards in the first round big but my daughter came back strong in round 2 and 3. We won the fight and went on to the finals to face USA #1 Girl in the nation. She fought well but we lost a split decision. All I can say is this technique really works. She new exactly what to do when thing went wrong. Thank you! I will keep doing this with her and with other fighters I train.
Thank you Sir. I'm a professional arm wrestler from Baltimore and also suffer from panic attacks. I have a supermatch tomorrow in South Jersey. Your video definitely helped. Respect!!!

I have been trying to find a video like this for a really long time and this was extremely helpful. Thanks a lot.
Glad it helped!
Thank you so much!!! I get approval anxiety more often than I thought, so thank you for helping me:)
Glad it helped!
This is a sign. I have my first boxing match in 10 weeks, and I’ve always been drained of energy by adrenaline whenever I have competed in other sports, so I was trying to research how I can control that before this fight. Can’t wait now!
It doesn’t help that I have a teammate that every single little mistake you make he has something to say about it. It makes me not want to go out to the field to play. It’s for soccer as well.
It got so bad I asked my coach to sit out in games. I know I’m good because I’m good in practice. I’m going to try these tips out and I’ll give an update.
Can't wait to hear about it!
i have the same thing, i was good in practices and matchs but due to covid i have lost my skill, i feel like quiting football because of it
@Sathvik Shastery and commenter I feel very similar don’t give up we can get through this
Believe me guys his last tip has really helped me a lot
I'm so glad to hear that!
I play at a very competitive league in soccer and I would always play really good in practices and when I’d play with friends but when it would come to a game I can’t concentrate and my confidence would go down slowly when I’d start messing up, but after watching this video I’m going to try out your techniques and hopefully they’ll work, thank you! I know this video will help me out in my future games
Let me know how it goes!
ik this is very late but this helped me alot i haven’t been playing the sport i loved for over a year because of a injury and im starting it tomorrow
Great to hear!
Hope nothing but the best for you. Haven’t played soccer in around 6 months because of a torn acl myself
This is a great video I’ve been suffering with performance anxiety ever since I was small and this is the closest I’ve feel to solving it.
That's so awesome!
thank you for this. it’s saved me from multiple anxiety attacks before tournaments and games. :)
That's so awesome to hear Kate!
i just started playing golf about a month ago. i’ll go to the driving range and hit really well by myself, and then go play a round with my buddy and play horrible. i’ll go into the round with a confident mindset and play a good first hole, but as soon as i don’t do as well as i expect i shut down and it looks like i’ve never swung a golf club before. today i did a little social experiment on myself at the driving range where i hit 4 balls, 2 with my buddy looking at me and 2 with him looking away. the 2 balls i hit when he wasn’t looking at me were great and the 2 i hit with him looking at me were horrible. this video helped a ton and i’ll try these methods the next time i go play! thanks!
Awesome, keep experimenting like that!
I had really bad performance anxiety and I could never really figure out what was going on. This vid helped me tremendously and sometimes I come back to remember the tools. Btw this vid helped me get to state for wrestling and helped me become a rescue swimmer
Thank you so much! I’m a violinist with many upcoming auditions and stressful performances. I never struggled mightily under pressure though this video still helps me a ton as in the violin world you want to be hitting that 99-100 percent accuracy. Truth is you can’t be missing shifts or playing out of tune at all. But putting it into perspective and taking into account what you’ve said really does help. In the end it’s just a game and my performance really just is affected by my own actions.
I’m an Olympic weightlifter so when I go on stage to lift I get so much anxiety. I’m honestly my biggest enemy. I beat myself up over the smallest things. And for weightlifting you kinda have to have some insomnia. I’m gonna start using this. Thanks for the help
Good to hear! Let me know how it goes.
This video is soooo good to all the athletes Ik it’s very hard especially if ur in middle school ur just about to go to high school and all these people r depending on you to make varsity and get a scholarship and y’all that just destructs you for why ur really playing the sport.

bro you are so right you have inspired me to be better. now i will pump myself up before each game and tell my self i can do it thanks so much

I feel like the crowd and impressing others just really gets to me and then in turn I just lose my legs and mess up. I’ve got playoffs next week and I will be trying my best to figure this out
You might have just changed my soccer career forever 😮
Thanks for this
Thank you for this video. I was searching for a video that could possibly put my mind at ease to sleep tonight. I play at a professional snooker/pool standard and lost a match tonight miles and miles below my standard. Everyone watching telling me I was the favourite to win the tournament out then I get beaten. I have gotten into a very dirty habit of drinking before I play to try block out my surroundings and it is a shame because of the natural ability i have. It's really hurting me because I know I can be a great way beyond what I even believe myself.
Performance anxiety is nothing new and happens to everyone. Keep pushing forward and see my latest video on being centered.
i play alot of tennis and i really struggle with the self-approval aspect, so much so that i can throw a game away because im so scared of losing
Not an uncommon feeling, you're not alone. However, it doesn't have to be a permanent situation.
This is gold. Thank you.x
Thank you Tammi!
Amazing info keep going man
I have tryouts again coming up for basketball this fall. On my previous tryouts, i have always played with fear which keeps me from playing my true potential and it puts me down because i know i can make the team. Watch the video a few more times, keep working on this and you will master it

Thank you for this great video it has given me a different look at playing softball. Because in practice I am comfortable and relaxed and when the game starts I tighten up for fear of failure a and letting my teammates down. It makes the game no fun for me. I will have a different look from here on out.
Is it weird that I almost cried watching this?! I suffer from horrible performance anxiety and it's pretty much across-the-board with everything--public speaking, playing and singing my guitar in front of others, and sports competition! I've been mountain biking for a really long time and I'm pretty damn fast, but I went into race For the first Time a few years ago and I practically had a panic attack before the race started; I was new to the town and I was so worried about what other people we're going to think for some reason. I wound up going way too hard up the first stretch and I totally blew it. I am also a singer and I play guitar--I don't play guitar as well as I sing but I love to do it--unless people are around and then suddenly I can't play. I've been struggling with it for years. It's weird, because I'm an extrovert--but I do suffer from horrible performance and sometimes social anxiety... So I'm going to keep watching your stuff, to you see if I can get over this crap--sadly I think it's been holding me back for my entire life :(

Absolutely! Also, talk to your coach. He is probably dealt with this many many times before and would have some good suggestions for you.
