    Wicked kit I wish I had met Ian in Canada. Jo Han kits lack depth and detail and lacked parts to put on but man they did some neat kits. Jo Han made all the dealership products promo cars mainly. I’ll buy that kit from you I am a fan and friend of Shirley’s wonderful person and a hell of a racer .

    @daviddanglis7135 Před rokem +1

    I’ve built many Jo-han kits, mostly showroom stockers. Those were always based on promotional tooling, so the kits were very simple and went together easily. Not much to complain about, except quite often they molded the front seats into the interiors.
    One big reason people like Jo-han kits is the crisp detail, which you mentioned. Beautifully done; you can tell they put a lot of care into their work. Emblems, window trim, grille textures - all were so sharp. Best in the business. Body proportions were reliable, too -- their cars looked "right."
    Jo-han was also noted for producing a lot of lower-interest cars. It seems like they got stuck with the promo contracts of lesser value, including lots of Ramblers. Yes, they made Javelin and AMX kits, but they also made Marlins and Americans. I’m not complaining, I enjoy all of those cars, but they didn’t do Jo-han a lot of favors when it came to kit sales back when they were new. Jo-han always seemed to struggle. They were like the AMC of the model car companies, where AMT, MPC and Revell were Ford, Chrysler and GM. (Not necessarily in that order!) On a number of occasions, Jo-han kits were sold under the AMT name, with AMT box art. AMT had better distribution; one usually had to go to hobby shops or off-beat stores to find Jo-han kits.
    In the early 1970s (I’ve been in the hobby that long), it looked like Jo-han would fade away because the real car companies were losing interest in promotional models - the core of Jo-han’s business. But in 1974 they started reissuing a lot of their earlier products, which likely preserved the company for the next several years. Modelers like me, who’d missed a lot of those interesting cars when they were new, were able to add them to our collections for the price of the average normal model kit, rather than having to pay “collector” prices.
    Not every Jo-han kit was simple. You really need to try their “Gold Cup” kits. Jo-han did three 1931 Cadillacs and a couple of 1934-35 Mercedes. Add elaborate multi-piece construction to their crisp detail...these kits were amazing. (It took a genius to put the parts trees back in the box, once they were removed, due to Jo-han's patented "Frame Pak" packaging!)
    The top of the heap is Jo-han's Chrysler Turbine Car -- one of the best model kits ever made. You really need to get one of these, preferably not a late-run kit but something produced before the molds started showing wear. Opening hood, trunk and doors; poseable front wheels, folding front seats - be sure to get one of these kits! When you do, you’ll want to start working on it immediately. I had quit the hobby for a few years in the early 1980s. When my interest returned, I had a craving to build something, NOW, so I got a Turbine Car kit and built it straight from the box, no painting whatsoever. It would have been much nicer with paint, but even without, it’s a great model to display and I still like it a lot.

      When I was a kid in the late 60s I had a frame pack Chrysler Turbine kit. It was molded in the cool copper color shown on the box top, the molds were still crisp and although it was not a simple build, I was able to do a decent assembly job due to the high quality engineering and design of the kit. Not unlike the Mobius kits and the more recent Revell/ Monogram models. I found a much later release at NNL East, but by this time the molds were badly worn and that puppy is a mass of flash. I recently bought one of the " Gold Cup" mid thirties Mercedes you mentioned, haven't started it yet, but WOW, what a kit...

    As far as flash goes, I have no problem with it, but what I do have a problem with is short shot parts! I have Jo-Han SC-Rambler that the left fender is missing the the last 5/8 of an inch. So yes I would rather deal with flash.

    I started building in the early seventies. My model choices were AMT, MPC, Jo-Han, Revell, Monogram, Linberg, Hawk, and Palmer. Palmer, great box art, that's it. Hawk, and Linberg, cheap, usually no chrome, odd subjects, and smaller scale. Jo-Han, lots of flash, AMC cars, or old cars, not muscle cars or custom cars. Revell, cool cars, lots of chrome, fiddely parts, difficult to build. AMT, relatively easy to build, multiple choices, would usually roll when finished, fun! MPC, much like AMT, but also had real life race car replicas that I liked. Monogram, usually the easiest to build, with minimal paint required because they were molded in color. Bad part was they usually didn't roll. Of course when I began painting everything, molded colors were a negative thing. Never really got into the Japanese kits, so don't have the experience of shake and bake.

    I remember jo-han making vehicles that the others didn't produce. I assume it's because they made the promo cars. Attention to detail was miles ahead in some ways, and on the other hand, the axel passes through the block. Lol

  • @thomasboogie734
    @thomasboogie734 Před rokem

    I obtained a copy of this AMX ON Ebay, paid a bit of cash too. The plastic on the body is so brittle it's cracked in a few places, both windshield 'A' pillars, the rear bumper/ taillight support and the front Fender, all cracked and the repairs were a pain in the butt. The one thing I like about JoHan kits are the cars you can't get anywhere else, Rambler, Oldsmobile station wagon, Plymouth Sport Fury from 65-66, Javelin/ AMX, etc. Their body molds are very accurate but the rest? Promo chassis with the poorest detail of all the major kit makers. In the case of the AMX, Javelin, Rebel and the 390 Rambler American factory drag car alll have outdated AMC engines with a few new parts tooled up for a " neither fish nor fowl" effect. So, except for some outstanding funny car kits- The Rebel SST and " Boss Hoss" - originally Mickey Thompson- Mustang FC with the updated ' digger' style chassis, I replace engines and chassis as best I can with the few AMC kits by AMT or MPC that can be adapted. Anyhow, thanks for an interesting and informative video. I build mostly drag cars so this was a nice surprise

  • @animalyze7120
    @animalyze7120 Před 5 měsíci

    You can compare MPC with Jo-Han they were the same type of toy promo car made into a model kit and had those nasty metal axles and loop design axle holders that made them look like Tonka cars underneath. The bodies were the only part aside from a few interior detail pieces other companies never thought to make, that were the best parts in the kits. I still do not miss getting these kits as a kid for gifts, which ended up on a shelf in the closet. Jo-Han didn't go out of business cause they were bad business folks, the kits they were selling just never cut the mustard, even if their bodies were spot on amazing when they didn't warp and grin at you from the shelf. The Chassis was horrendous and the front axel went through the engine oil pan on many, just garbage. I remember hobby stores and box stores dropping these things prices to the extreme just get rid of them and like episode 7-9 star wars toys they still didn't sell. AMT tried to copy the design for awhile and immediately jumped ship when sales went to the flusher. I would never pay the Ebay price scalpers what they are asking for these kits, I'd honestly pay $20 max unless they it was warped and smiling or the tires ate through the glass or body parts, then I'd say 5 bux. MPC got better of course and made amazing kits through the 80's but Jo-Han, nope. I still buy bodies online when they go for good prices as you can use them on most 1/25 chassis of the same or close enough length.
    Shirley Shahan is Shay-Han like fan with an H. Great video, Jo-Han did have the market on great AMC kits so the Javelins are a great find, marry that body to an AMT or Revell Chassis and you have a beautiful kit.

    I think the AMX was basically a shortened version of the Javelin. AMC was hoping to appeal to a younger democratic and keep the business alive. Always liked them but liked my Camaro more.

    There is no cylinder holes because of the angle that the heads fit on. The molding process of old does not allow for this. Or they just said the heck with it.
