    JoHan kits are like real life Superbirds, back then not many wanted em because other than engine and body detail they were pretty basic but now every one wants them, they go for crazy money, and us who horded them in the 90s and early 2000s hoard them

    Two very nice looking kits. I do not remember seeing Jo Han kits from my childhood either. Now I do remember the Jo Han display cases. The two French cars are pretty cool. I was in a hobby shop today and I saw the Revell Germany. Thanks for sharing.

    The Dodge is not a Cornet, it's a 1964 Dodge Polara. It's the only year with that body style. My dad had one back in the late 60's early 70's. His had a 318 with an automatic push button shifter. Sweet car.

      The 65 Polara had the 1st year for the C platform. The '65 Coronet was the "B- body platform . Can prove confusing to those not fluent in Mopareze.

    The JoHan Torino body is the basis for the MPC NASCAR Torino. The body was JoHans promo, they opened the hood and put a hole in the side for the fuel filler. Then they added the flat hood. MPC removed the trim and used a bulged hood instead of a flat hood. The Dodge is supposed to be a Polara, but they messed up some of the trim after the original release. That extra dash is an AMT 68-69 Torino dash so is the tub

      Looks like a Coronet to me but both are very similar.

    Your Dodge is a 64 330.
    Also... I would LOVE it if your first Jo-Han build was one of your Chrysler Turbine cars. After all, you have more than one. 😁

    Cool kits!! As a kid, I bought the majority of my model kits & supplies from my local Western Auto. I still remember the layout of the store and where the model kits were kept. I do remember Jo Han kits but I can not remember if I 'built' (ie: glue-bombed) any of them.

    Nice kits Matthew. I have the `64 Coronet also, and a couple of stock `72 Gran Torinos. They are nice kits. Very simplified, but nice. I believe the Citroen you mention, with the "fluid suspension" is the Citroen DS-19...

    Heller kit is a Traction - that was short for Traction-Avant, which means front drive. It was one of the first unitary construction cars.

  • @daviddanglis7135
    @daviddanglis7135 Před 22 dny

    Look at the flash on that Torino kit. Wow. I've seen some bad flashing on Jo-han kits, but never that bad -- looks like Hubley molded that one! Nice that you got both of those kits in white, though. In the latter days, Jo-han used some crazy colors in their kits. Jo-han was a small company, almost a mom-and-pop shop in comparison with AMT, MPC, Revell, etc. (dunno if there was an actual "mom," though). Both of these kits started out as promotional models. The '64 Dodge Polara was retooled ca. 1965-66 as a Ramcharger Dodge and lost a lot of its stock parts. You're correct that Jo-han lost the licensing for "Ramchargers;" that same problem hit a number of Jo-han kits back in the early '70s. The "Recharged" version came out ca. 1972-73 I believe. The Torino sat around for a while after the run of promos, I think, then was reissued as a snap kit ca. 1975-76. Then came the oval track version.

  • @davidhinkson8856

    Yes indeed the Citroen Traction Avant was a front wheel drive car, which would have been quite rare in the 1930s when it came out, and it actually stayed in production until 1955 when the DS replaced it. I only found out about Jo Han kits within the last 15-20 years as well and based on what I have seen on other CZcams channels, they made some kits that other manufacturers didn't and while some were simplistic, some were also pretty good for their time. Now you've delved into the two Jo Han cars, could that interior tub and dash in the Torino be from the MPC 1969 Torino Cobra? Kinda reminds me of that model, but that is a pretty well detailed model and it's good to see that the decal sheet in both cars is in such good shape given their age. I guess they were stored properly over the years.

    Fun fact
    Any kit box before 1970 would not have a barcode on it because that system came into being in 1970 to make pricing and inventory easier for grocers

  • @JustBelowAverageModelCars

    That is a 429 Boss heads/valve covers and intake manifold. Can't tell about the block, but it looks like a 427 SOHC front cover! Not sure if they were still using the Boss 429 in 72, but they were never allowed to run the 427 SOHC motor. I would just use a Resin/3D printed 351 Cleveland NASCAR motor. Hint Hint!! Fun unboxing, thanks! Build them both BTW😁

    I also built that ‘64 Dodge last year, as David Pearson’s Cotton Owens car.

  • @dustymojave
    @dustymojave Před 21 dnem

    The Johan kits are way cool. I've been pretty fond of them since the 60s. Their proportions are perfect. They did promos for Mopar and some others. The chassis under the Torino is a very cool 70s NASCAR chassis. But the axle is DANA, typical of Mopars in that day. The engine is confused. Somebody didn't know which engine was right. Actually a 351C was appropriate in Bud Moore's Torino as represented by the MPC 72/73 Torino NASCAR kit.
    The 64 Dodge is basic with molded in axle, suspension and such with front and rear steel axles. Kinda like AMT of the 60s. But the front engine bay was more accurate. The same chassis was used for the Mopar B bodies of the late 60s like my 68 GTX, 69 Road Runner and 70 Superbird that I have in my display case. This is a Mopar B body. Coronet. Charger. Road Runner. Belvedere. Similar "mid-size" and market competitive with GM Chevelles, Tempest/ GTO, Skylark, Cutlass, Ford Fairlane/Torino, Comet/Cyclone, etc.
    The Citroen (you got the pronunciation of it pretty close...kinda like "Sit-troyn") is a "Traction Avant" which means "drive in front". Back in the late 1970s one of my closest pals had grown up going to school and such and had been best friends with a guy named Connie Babylonia. Yeah. A guy by that name. He had just come out of the Navy. Had served on the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier. I spent some time visiting with him and his family. Went on some snow play trips together, etc. Things that young adult friends do together. Connie's little sister was quite famous at the time. Thai Babylonia was at the top of the world of pairs figure skating with her partner Randy Gardner. They were world champions headed for a gold in the Olympics when Randy dropped her from an overhead lift. Killed their Olympics bid and pretty much their careers in figure skating. I digress way off from the model it would SEEM. BUT! Thai and Connie's dad had a restoration project in his garage. He showed it off proudly to me. It was the same model 15 Citroen Traction Avant. The engine needed a rebuild and the upholstery was rough. But the body was in real good shape.
    YES, the car IS front wheel drive. 4 door sedan.
    Later Citroens had the hydropneumatic suspension. The 2CV (deux chevaux = 2 horse). For French tax purposes that model was rated as equivalent to 2 horses. Not 2hp. It's a strange French deal. But basically the car was an "economy car" similar to and in some markets competitive with the VW Bug. It is 3rd in overall all time car production after the VW Bug and the Model T. The suspension had very long travel. Not real rugged like a Bug, but longer travel.

    Nice additions to your stash Matthew. I think it's pronounced "sit-tron". At least that's how I've always heard it pronounced. When I was a kid, back in the 60's, Jo-Han kits weren't considered good kits. There was too much flash and the fit was always bad. We always got Revell, AMT and MPC kits. If we wanted something special we got the Japanese kits. They were way more expensive but the quality was worth it. By the way. I have my new MCV Products sticker on my workbench. 👍👍

    It's not that they used the wrong covers, Ford did plan to use the 429 amid arguments with NASCAR. The real goof is JoHan used the front cam timing chain cover from the SOHC engine.

    Other than the Classic Cadillac v-16's or the Mercedes Benz 500 K kits from Johan, I haven't built any other of their kits. That Polara I gave you was just begging to detail the trunk, hence, I cut the deck lid, was going to make a Pro street I think? The engine you got with it is a 1/24 440 out of a Monogram Road Runner kit. You have the first set of Headers I ever tried,,,ooopppsss? So have fun with either of them??

  • @howardheno1628
    @howardheno1628 Před 17 dny

    I think that's a 64 and they probably ran 4 speeds and automatics in the super stock class. Ford definitely ran Thunderbolts with a Lincoln automatic as well as the 4speed in 64. The Chrysler Torque Flight transmission was a popular trans in the gasser classes taking over from the GM Hydromatic.

  • @FAIRMONTsforever1978
    @FAIRMONTsforever1978 Před 21 dnem

    The dash and interior appear to be 1968-69 torino. The kit is suppose to be like nascar. Usac allowed the 429 in torinos and mustangs. Jack Bowsher ran both on the Milwaukee mile. They had problems with them overheating. Back in 72 you had to run factory suspensions. So the rear end is a Ford 9". The trans should have been a heavy duty Ford toploader. My kit does'nt have those two interior parts. I started combining that body with a roush pro stock Thunderbird. Coming along pretty good.
