Austar AX8560 1/18: Best Budget RtR Micro-Crawler - by far!

  • This tiny crawler with jeep body is awesome, highly recommended (link below)!
    Running tests: 12:31 , disassembling: 26:48 , final conclusions: 37:39
Very few cons: No crawler mode, only F/B/R, reverse slower than forward, turning lights always on and too fast, red lights only on when reversing.
    A ton of pros:
    - top price
    - awesome detailed Jeep-style hardbody
    - inner fenders, metal c-channel frame, trailer hitch
    - very nice body mount system
    - nice lights and light functions controlled by radio
    - 4-link suspension front and rear
    - high clearance links
    - large motor with a lot of torque and punch
    - fantastic low speed modulation, best of all RtR brushed micro trucks
    - ESC totally silent, no whining at all
    - 3-speeds (electronic) work well, even in low speed good torque and punch
    - very nice and sticky tires with foams on 1.0 beadlock rims (best tires in a RtR micro I know)
    - hex hardware (1.5 mm driver) all around, even servo-arm mounting screw, drive shaft mounting screws (only beadlock rims are mounted by PH screws)
    - ball bearings all over the truck
    - gears (plastic) nicely greased
    - universal steering
    - metal gear servo

      Thank you.
Probably on Ali? One dealer has it for 62 € now (about 68 $), including 3 x 20-4.
Also on Banggood it was on 72 and with allowance you could get lower.
Slow reverse is a pain, mainly in slow speed, way too slow in reverse.
Because of this I ordered a TRX-4M (my very first model of the brand we won't name ;-) ) on Sunday, will arrive tomorrow, and two more videos will be up hopefully soon, one comparing the Austar to the TRX-4M and the oter "MCCT" with both.
Tested a bit, trailer hitch is very low, but it keeps it from tipping over in very steep steps, but hinders reversind in those situations; I removed it till trailer will arrive.
And, nobody knows this so far: Found 2 more Phillips head screws there (mounting the hitch) ;-)

Thank you for all the great details. I’m betting the trailer hitch and trailer came later after the first few were produced and translated to using the screws that are holding the trailer together. Who knows, maybe the trailer is fitted with Phillips screws? For the money it looks totally worth it with minimal short comings. Glad to hear you are getting a trx4-m. I’d be curious to see how this stacks up against it. I know right away on the Traxxas that it is almost all brass bushings. I have yet to own a Traxxas . Usually the cost of them keeps me from getting any. After all my channel is about rc’s that offer a lot of value per dollar. Thanks again for sharing Sir! Looks like I’ve just subscribed to another awesome channel!👊🏼😎✌🏼💯💯💯

@@BangForYourBuckRc slow speed (1st gear) is surprisingly strong (compared to 1st gear in many other trucks which have electronically controlled/Dual rate gears). But in reverse 1st tear it is super, super slow and alwo weak...
Reverse is in all gears maybe 25% only of forward (did not measure), way too slow.
      Trailer hitch came mounted...
Will receive the trailer soon... but I did already hear, it is quite "cheapo quality"...

Actually doing the MCCT "work", will take some time.
My motivation to buy a TRX-4M? If the Austar is a copy, I want to check it. Always wanted to do a MCCT, best with all 4 TRX-4M, but couldn't justify to spend so much money only for a YT video (about 800 €, ca. 900 US$ for all four). Finally bought only one... TRX-4M is much more expensive here in EU than in US, way more expensive than Axial for example.
Or my motivation for not liking the T-brand? Extremely expensive, extremely bad electronics for the price (similar to RC4WD 1/18 and 1/24), proprietary plugs etc., so trying to force customers to buy (overpriced) T-stuff, suing other companies for "everything", and finally also the typical "Traxxas fanboys" (they are also in our German forum), who only bought the TRX-4M because it is a T-brand

So I have two of these, a great one and orange. The great one has the same bad reverse that others do, the orange one has a regular functioning reverse. Very speedy. Do you know how this can be?

@@donaldsneffe yeah so I found out the orange one from Ali runs fast in reverse, the different switches affect the reverse speed, but the grey one just like the video, one really slow reverse.

@@abrahamanzaldua6289 Thank you for this super interesting question - now I get it. Because of you asking I tested right now the two open channels out on the receiver/ESC/lightcontroller unit (which are used for lights). Unfortunately it does not work with external ESC, so no CH-2 (throttle) out. The receiver will work and servo will work, if you plug in an external ESC, but unfortunately motor does not work :-( - this would have been super cool.
So of course you still can use it, it will work with the motor, but you will have to exchange receiver and radio.
