      @@bamzilla1616 GaN charging? They obviously already have the power delivery circuitry figured out internally. My 200W 4 port charger from Volta just came in the other day and it is TINY. They could easily add just a centimeter to each of the dimensions and that would be more than enough space to add an internal power supply - WITH a standard C13 cable.

    I would kind of like another dock roundup video in which you go into usage of a dock with both TB3, TB4, and USB w/ displayport & USB-PD devices. As an IT professional AND a tech enthusiast, I still have no idea if any of the docks I looked at would work without trying them ... so I gave up.
    I feel like a large number of IT professionals are now in the situation of using one dock for multiple use cases (work laptops, family laptops, personal gaming laptop, ...) so seeing someone make that setup work would be amazing!

    • @JolanRensen
      @JolanRensen Před rokem +3

      Well, if you want to know whether a thunderbolt 4 dock would work on PCs or other devices with only thunderbolt 3 or just USB c (and PD), then yes. I can personally say that the docks are backwards compatible.
      I bought a Club 3D CSV-1580 for my Thunderbolt 3 laptop and it can charge it, power my USB c/dp display (and pass through its USB 3 type A ports) as well as support other USB C devices (I don't have any other thunderbolt devices to test it with though).
      But even when I attach my phone to it, which is just USB c, no thunderbolt whatsoever, it can still charge it and pass on USB devices. Specifically, my pixel 4xl doesn't support display out, so my screen doesn't light up, but the USB ports in the display do still function!
      So in conclusion, the docks are backwards compatible and offer all the functionality the host device is capable of delivering.

    • @LeoLozes
      @LeoLozes Před rokem +3

      It's kinda hard, especially when you have a Mac. I couldn't get my (expensive) USB-C dock to work with both Thunderbolt 4K@60 & HDMI 2K@120 at the same time, even if on paper it should be able to do it. All I could get was a duplicated image on both screens (with an M1 Pro, which should be able to drive both _I think_). I ended up connecting one of the displays with USB-C directly to the laptop. I also have my wireless mouse & keyboard, Kanto TUKs and FiiO K3 connected to a KVM switch, THEN connected to the hub, so I can switch my sound setup / keyboard / mouse easily between my laptop and my desktop. I guess I have a complicated setup / use case, but there's suprisingly not much content on dongle / hub hell in the top CZcams tech channels.

      It's hard to even find stock on these things. I kind of resisted buying TB docks until this generation. I've been using the CalDigit TB4 Element Hub at work and the OWC TB4 Thunderbolt Dock at home and honestly? They've been completely flawless. I know that earlier generations of TB docks could be problematic, but it seems like the TB4 generation has finally ironed out the issues.

    • @mbvglider
      @mbvglider Před rokem +2

      My TB4 docks allow me to use both my PC and Mac laptops with a whole bunch of external peripherals with one cable that also charges. I like that TB4 hubs and docks generally have far more USB-C connectivity and more TB ports and aren't just limited to a bunch of legacy ports, so I have a dock that will age gracefully, whereas I felt like a lot of earlier docks were only there to interface with older devices and wouldn't work as well with newer peripherals that use newer ports.

Although there are only two downstream extra TB4 ports, it's quite nice that there are tons of USB-C 3.2 ports for those of us who don't really need too much USB-A anymore. USB c, USB 4, and Thunderbolt have gotten so confusing. One thing I learned recently that I think Linus should teach people is that a lot of thunderbolt docks support dual displays but some windows laptops, even though they have thunderbolt 3 (not sure if 4 enforces this) that does not mean they can do dual displays over thunderbolt. Some companies simply don't wire up two displayport connections to their thunderbolt port. It's an optional part of the spec, apparently. Linus did however briefly mention in this video that Apple has a better implementation of thunderbolt than windows machines. Some docks get around this by using displayport technology (use your CPU to drive one of your monitors) but that's not an ideal solution at all.

    This is what I purchased for my MacBook Air back in March. Love that the port that you attach to the host device is in the back. Only thing I found is the strips for me did not allow enough air flow so the device was very hot to the touch, and I could not keep my hand on it..
    So went to The Home Depot and purchased "3/4 in. Clear Soft Rubber Plastic Like Self-Adhesive Square Bumpers". Now I can leave my hand on it even though it is real warm to the touch.

    The Caldigit USB-C Pro Dock is the first Thunderbolt dock (I've had 3) that *mostly* works. Albeit the first one had ethernet problems and caused kernel panics daily on my Mac, after persisting and going through the warranty, the replacement works pretty well!
    That's not to say it's perfect, for example the Logitech Unifying Receiver drops out regularly if I use it via the dock in MacOS. Instead I have to use a separate USB-C to USB dongle, which is the only way to get the Unifying receiver to work reliably - although I believe this is a Logitech or MacOS problem as many people with thunderbolt docks complain about the same problem.
