      Our TS4 only supports a host connection via the Computer port.
      You could do something like this with our TS3 Plus, where both Thunderbolt ports can be used as the host. The caveat is that you will have to unplug one of the host devices for it to adopt the other device as the host. Either way, you are going to have to disconnect one thing and connect the other.

    Hello, the product indeed caught my attention. What I'm curious about is whether, after sending a 4K 144Hz display to my Dell G3223Q monitor through the DP1.4 output, it's still possible to output video to a second monitor using the remaining Thunderbolt output ports with an adapter. Can it handle a 1080p 144Hz or 2K 144Hz display, or will it be limited to just one 4K 144Hz output, and I won't be able to get any video on a second 1080p 60Hz monitor? Thank you.

    • @CalDigitHQ
      @CalDigitHQ  Před 8 měsíci

      You can get dual 4k144hz monitors as long as the monitors and computer support Display Stream Compression (DSC), so 144hz at a lower resolution is also possible.

    •  Před 8 měsíci

      @@CalDigitHQ I'm using M1 Max Macbook Pro. As I mentioned, I don't want to use any compression like DSC on my primary external monitor, the Dell g3223q, because I don't want any compression on the image. Can I use a second 1080p monitor at 144Hz?

    • @CalDigitHQ
      @CalDigitHQ  Před 8 měsíci

      @ I don't think DisplayPort 1.4 is capable of reaching 4k144hz without using DSC. The cap is 4k120hz at 8bpc I believe.
      1080p144hz would work just fine without DSC. I believe 1440p144hz is also achievable.

    Does this dock work RELIABLY? Is there anything different about this TB4 dock (or macOS 12.2) that would make it work with less issues than previous Thunderbolt docks from any brand?

    • @CalDigitHQ
      @CalDigitHQ  Před 2 lety +2

      We have seen some unwanted behaviors introduced in macOS 12.2 and earlier versions of Monterey in a small number of computers that has affected all Thunderbolt docks. Particularly, dual monitors do not always reliably stay connected. Again, this behavior does not affect all computers, we have had limited success in replicating it in our testing lab
      Additionally, there is a separate graphics related behavior that is affecting a small number of users. When a macOS computer is put to sleep in clamshell mode, some computers may crash when waking up from sleep. This behavior goes back a little longer, to Catalina, and has existed intermittently since on some level, it disappearing almost entirely on Big Sur before coming back with Monterey. This behavior can occur on any Thunderbolt dock with a monitor connected, and possibly USB-C docks as well.
      These are very niche cases, and the majority of users will not experience them. Some of the behavior seems to be isolated to a particular computer, where-in we have swapped out an affected computer with an identical one and the behavior has gone away in some cases. We expect that both of these behaviors will be cleared up with a future macOS update and we are reporting all of our findings to Apple to aid in expediting that process.

  • @brunofischer
    @brunofischer Před 2 lety +1

    Hello, how are you? I'm having a lot of problems with the Kernel Task, I believe because I'm using docks that are not certified by Apple. How is this issue with CalDigit TS4? My macbook pro is from 2018, it sucks when I have to connect some peripherals.

    • @CalDigitHQ
      @CalDigitHQ  Před 2 lety +1

      We're seeing some cases of Kernel Panics, but it's mostly only occurring when the computer is waking up from sleep, and only to some users. Specifically, we think it's related to the graphics driver on macOS, as the behavior seems to go away when no monitors are connected.
      We're working with Apple to get this resolved as quickly as possible and are hoping it's corrected in a future macOS update.
      Other than this case, the dock works great and should be compatible with your use-case.

    Hi, I am looking for docking station. This one looks tops of class. Could you please confirm if it can connect with Three External Monitors in Extendend mode (4k - 60 HZ) each and counting laptop's screen as fourth?
    (mac and windows).

    • @CalDigitHQ
      @CalDigitHQ  Před rokem +1

      Three external monitors is not natively supported by Thunderbolt - only up to two monitors are supported normally.
      The only way to do this is with a technology called DisplayLink, which works by using a software program to drive additional monitors. This is a bit more work to set up than a normal monitor, so we don't include it in our docks. You can add the tech to any dock yourself with a USB DisplayLink adapter.

    Can you also connect a Windows computer, a Macbook and a Mac and other devices to the TS4 at the same time or do you get conflicts?

    • @CalDigitHQ
      @CalDigitHQ  Před 9 měsíci

      There can only be one host device at a time. So while you can technically connect multiple computers to the TS4, not much is going to happen.
      Some PC to PC or macOS to macOS connections can utilize Thunderbolt data sharing, but whether this is supported is dependent on the individual computers you are connecting.

  • @adiquest

    Nice details...Now with all these ports, do they share bandwidth or are the all independent and each will get the full 10Gbit/s or 40Gbit/s. In other words, If I connect 2 TB4 cables will the ports share and now I am down to 20GBits/s? Thank you... I would like to get one and feature it on my CZcams channel, but if the bandwidth is shared, I will not make a purchase.

    • @CalDigitHQ
      @CalDigitHQ  Před 6 měsíci

      Everything shares the single 40Gbps connection, but ports only utilize as much as they need.
      Beyond that, all the USB ports share a single 10Gbps USB BUS.

    • @CalDigitHQ
      @CalDigitHQ  Před rokem

      It depends on the kind of drives and how much you already have connected to the dock.
      If you mostly have peripherals connected like a keyboard and mouse, and nothing that takes up a ton of data bandwidth, the drives are almost certainly fine to use without any performance hits.

    • @CalDigitHQ
      @CalDigitHQ  Před rokem

      You don't need to worry about that at all.
      Modern computers are pretty smart, and they are already prepared for this scenario. Basically, every time a charging device plugs into any modern computer, there's a sort of handshake that occurs between the computer and charger, where-in they come to an agreement on how much power will be passed on, if any. In a situation like your setup, the computer will always tell any connected devices not to give any power.

      Yes, the computer will pick up Ethernet connected to a dock as hardline/ connected to the computer. MacOS likes to jump back and forth between all connected internet options, so to ensure it stays on Ethernet you should turn off Wi-fi if you're connected to the local network.

      @@adirkse I'm sorry, I think I misinterpreted your question. The first comment in this chain was asking about when our Docking Station Utility software will work natively on M1 devices instead of through Rosetta. All of our docks can utilize this same software.
      It sounds like what you are asking is specifically about TS4 compatibility with M1 devices. Overall, the TS4 is compatible with M1 devices. The largest unintended behavior we are seeing right now is related to the dock's behavior changing when the computer goes through a sleep cycle. The nature of this behavior has changed pretty drastically between each macOS 12 update, so we are working with Apple to get this resolved as soon as possible.

    • @CalDigitHQ
      @CalDigitHQ  Před 2 lety +1

      No, not with our TS4. You have to use the host port to get a connection.
      Here's some additional info on charging in case you're curious:
      If you plug in another charger to the computer, like the charger that came with your computer, the computer will only accept charging from one source. Generally this is the computer's charger itself.
      Additionally, most modern computers utilize some kind of battery conservation technology that makes keeping the charger plugged in at all times safe for the battery. Some common techniques are slowing charging down to a trickle as the battery approaches full, and bypassing the battery entirely to pull power straight from the charger when the battery is at full.

      No. However, if the concern is about degraded battery life, that's a non-issue. Modern laptops utilize a wide variety of battery conservation techniques to maintain long healthy battery life. Modern MacBooks all implement slower trickle charging as the battery reaches full, and many will bypass the battery entirely if a power source is plugged in when the battery is full.

    I have 144hz monitor and macbook m1, how can i set it up to get this 144hz? Through display port?

    • @CalDigitHQ
      @CalDigitHQ  Před měsícem

      If everything is already set up, you can find refresh rate in "System Preferences" and then "Displays". Select your monitor, and "Refresh rate" is towards the bottom of the menu.
      If you can't reach your target refresh rate, there may be something wrong with the connection. In that case, I'd suggest you start by replacing cables. Both the DisplayPort cable and Thunderbolt cable would be good to replace. If the Thunderbolt cable is one of ours and turns out to be at fault, our support team would be happy to replace it.
      Also, check your monitor's physical settings and check if you have a refresh rate option in there - some monitors can limit refresh rate this way.
      Beyond that, our support team would be happy to further assist. You can best reach them via email at Support@CalDigit.com

    Hi. I wonder if TS4 supports dual 1440p 144hz monitors. I'm using a m1 pro MacBook pro. If yes, will there be constraints in which kind of cable to connect them with? How about monitors that are 1440p 165hz? Thanks in advance!

    • @CalDigitHQ

      Dual 1440p 144hz should be supported and can work via either USB-C or DisplayPort, as long as the cable is rated for DisplayPort 1.4
      165hz is maybe possible, but that's definitely pushing the limit of the dock. We have not had the chance to test with this configuration yet.

      @@27hdyx6b3ym3w Thank you for providing some some sources to provide your suggestion.
      My understanding is that both the Anker and Kensington docks you linked toggle power on the dock itself. This is definitely a feature that some users request and is within our ability to do, but for a variety of factors, our engineering team has opted not to include it in our products.
      I understand that what you really want is what the Dell dock is offering, which is an external power button for the physical computer. However, the button only works on compatible products, namely Dell computers (and probably not even all of them). I'm unfamiliar with the ins and outs of how this works, but I understand that there is no standardization for external power button support at all, if it's even a supported operation. My understanding is that no macOS computer even supports this function.
      Essentially, if we were to produce a dock with this feature, it would only work for very specific brands of computers. Computer manufacturers can get away with this because the docks they manufacture are accessories for their own computers, but we have take into account all possible computers in our products.

      I thought it was a Monterey issue too, when my Caldigit TS3 plus had issues. But it’s not, it might be an issue with Caldigit. Here’s how I figured it out. I purchased a Satechi Thunderbolt 4 dock and it worked flawlessly with my MacBook Pro M1 Max with Monterey.
      I really like my Caldigit TS3 plus with all its connectivity, so I didn’t want to let it go. I then connected it to one of the Thunderbolt 4 ports of the Satechi dock and now it works perfectly. The monitors wake up and the external hard drives stay connected. So I am happy to use my TS3 plus thus way.
      I am wondering if this is some hardware handshake issue. I say this because I tried the sonnet echo 11 Thunderbolt 4 dock, which seems to be a clone of the Satechi and my external drives kept disconnecting on wake. I then purchased the Satechi on a whim, and it worked! It even made my Caldigit TS3 plus which was connected to it work.

He used one caldigit ts3 and two startech dual adapters which according to him has an builtin vga s in them. In theory if one port of macbook air m1 can run 4 displays with this setup, then m1max has 3 thunderbolt ports, and one hdmi, so 4 startech dual adaptors for 8 displays, attached to 2 ts4 four display outputs combined, and 2 ts4s to two mbp m1max two thunderbolt ports, and then we are left with 1 spare tb port and 1 hdmi..... they can run 2 for total 10 monitors setup. @@latesttechtrends1227 I'm familiar with a video that sounds very similar to what you are describing, but the magic sauce was that they were using DisplayLink adapters for additional monitors. This would be your best bet for the amount of monitors you are looking for.
      DisplayLink bypasses the Thunderbolt monitor limit by operating the monitors via the CPU instead of the GPU. With this method, you could theoretically get as many monitors as there are USB ports available - so up to 11 monitors on a single TS4 (including the 2 supported via Thunderbolt). The downside of this method is that it can introduce unwanted behavior to the computer, and may cause additional computer load at idle.
      We don't officially support it, so I really couldn't say what kind of performance you can expect. But with that many monitors running of the CPU, the computer would definitely be under continuous strain, definitely more than usual.

      Big Sur is the first macOS version to support Thunderbolt 4. Previous versions, such as Catalina, cannot support the TS4 because they have no way of understanding what the TS4 is.

      @CalDigitHQ  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for your suggestion!
      DisplayPort is provisioned for in Thunderbolt, so it's both more reliable and simpler to include DisplayPort versus any other standard.
      With that in mind, we have added HDMI to our docks in the past and we may do so again in the future.

      @@CalDigitHQ How about a displayport that actually works on Mac Ventura OS? I get NOTHING on my display even though it is seen in my display list in settings.

    • @CalDigitHQ
      @CalDigitHQ  Před rokem

      @@haroldson5 We've been seeing macOS Ventura misbehaving a bit with Thunderbolt docks. We're analyzing cases that come in and send to Apple with our findings, so we're hoping an update to macOS fully corrects this behavior.
      In the mean time, there are some workarounds. The major one is changing the DisplayPort version on your monitor's physical settings. We've mostly tracked this monitor misbehavior to DisplayPort 1.2 monitors, so changing your monitor to DisplayPort 1.4 or 1.1 may help alleviate this behavior.
      Beyond that, we also recommend trying a different DisplayPort cable if possible. Sometimes unshielded or internally frayed cables can introduce behavior similar to what you are describing.
      If you are converting from HDMI to mate with the TS4's DisplayPort, please also make sure that you are using an Active DisplayPort to HDMI adapter. These adapters do the work of translating the different video standards so that the monitor and computer work together.
      If none of this helps, our support team can assist further. You can best get in touch via email at Support@CalDigit.com

      It’s not. You get what you pay for. Other docks on the market that I paid less for had various issues (including being unable to handle more than one external monitor without additional software and simply dying after just a few months/overheating). This thing JUST WORKS. And it’s marvelous.
