- Ever wondered what it's liked to live in China as a foreigner? Take a look at what my average weekend living in Beijing is REALLY like!
I'm Aleese Lightyear, a 32-year-old Black American living in Beijing, China. I've been in China for 2 years and have experienced life before and during Covid. Follow me on Instagram for more content: @aleeseLightyear
My weekend starts on Saturday morning when I'm abruptly woken up by the terrible noise of construction happening in the apartment above mine. I quickly head outside without a plan of what to do, so I hop on a bike and ride until I find something that catches my eye. To my surprise, I stumbled upon a group of grown men swimming in a river in 30ºF weather.
Maybe the river swimmers could feel the warmth coming because that afternoon turned into the warmest day of March. I head to the historical hutong areas and check out the Drum and Bell Tower that was built in 1272. Later, I meet up with my friend and fellow CZcamsr, Lauren. Follow her on CZcams & IG @LaurensChinaLife. We eat dinner at a Muslim Chinese restaurant and order way too much food!
One of the best things about living in an international city like Beijing is there are a lot of bars/restaurants where you can get all the comforts of your hometown. A huge American comfort for me is watching RuPaul's Drag Race!!! There is an expat-owned bar called, Nugget, that hosts a weekly Drag Race Night and I'm happier than ever to watch!
Sunday begins with a visit to the police station. No worries--I'm not in trouble! Just doing some mandatory registration updating. Afterward, I go to a literal hole-in-the-wall breakfast spot for some local Chinese pancakes.
Then I have a hilarious encounter with a stray doggy and his chicken wing. Then I head to my second job-- tutoring. I tutor an adorable 5-year-old, and with his parent's permission, he is featured in this video.
My weekend ends at the nail salon, where after a 4-hour long appointment, I come out with lovely pastel-colored nails. That's it ya'll! I hope you enjoy watching a typical weekend in my life in Beijing!!

That “mysterious” dish is 锅包肉, basically deep fried pork (or beef if it’s halal) slices coated with potato starch drenched in a sweet and sour sauce. It’s one of the OG versions of sweet and sour pork/beef.
Oh you're amazing for this!! Thanks a ton for letting me know what it actually is!! The flavor was really good, but the meat was just too tough to eat---so I'll try it again at a different place!

No no no no no. How can that be pork?! It is a xinjiang restaurant. The food there is halal.

I'm surprised by Lauren's knowledge about the difference between how northern and southern Chinese treat their restaurant utensils. I'm from north so washing them always feels weird to me haha.

Why am I like this?!?!? Why couldn't I just walk past the chicken spot and keep it moving?!?!? I HAD TO KNOW! There are a lot of dogs in my neighborhood and I kept thinking it would be gone in 60 seconds. I was sooo surprised that it was still there!! I hope he went back for it in the end!

That person swimming must be from the north area. They usually like swimming in lakes when it’s cold cold.
Really like the way you interact with the kid when teaching him English. He seems happy & confident 💕
Winter swimming is a thing in Beijing...many old people do it for health benefits haha...

I love your videos, you seem super energetic, loving, and receptive to other cultures. In general, you just seem like a good person. If you like it in China, I hope in the future u will have more great experiences and I hope you never meet any rude people in China. If people is ever rude to you in China, I just hope you understand the reason they’re rude is because they’ve never seen as much foreign cultures as you’ve probably seen, and that their opinions shouldn’t matter since it’s based on their close mindedness. Btw I’m from Beijing too, your videos rly brought me home.

btw I think that mysterious plate of meat is called "Guo Bao Rou" literally translates to Wok fried Pork, So they are thinly slices (questionable) pork tenderloin, coated with starch mixture and deep fried first then sauteed in vinegary sugar sauce, so literally a plate or sweet and sour pork ! but since it was coated with light starch (stick rice power as well i heard) the texture of crunchy surface is a ted different tho.
I love you guys! I first heard about you from Lauren’s channel and argh y’all got good vibezzz! I have travelled to China several times and was getting ready to relocate to Wuhan and start teaching, then COVID happened. I miss that place tho.

there’s a river swimming club right outside my work here too😂😂 it was so popular that the police had to laid down a string across the river to stop ppl from jumping in

I hate to break this terrible news to you but, the jellyfish are DEAD 😂💀! They only lasted about a week or so. I was sick for a few days and missed school, but when I came back--- the students told me that they died because he changed the water too often! The student who owned the jellyfish ended up changing schools the dame week the jellies died. So the saga is over---but damn was it entertaining!!!😝😝

I was confused to looking at the dish because it looks totally different from what I’m used to eating, maybe because they used beef instead of pork but according to your receipt it’s 锅包肉 （guo bao rou). Which is a dongbei 东北 traditional dish. I didn’t see any traditional xinjiang 新疆 food though haha. Man you make me miss China. The 7 best years of my life. Enjoy you while you can and take it all in. It changes so fast and time will fly. And try to pick up some Chinese if you can, it’ll be useful to you one day trust me.
