Horrifying! Portal's Ion is one of the most dystopian and sound-rich technical death metal records of the decade.

Y'all know this is just my opinion, right? - Hudba
All kendrick needs to do to up his score is make tech death metal.
Weaver Beats you act like that wouldn't be the best release of 2018
I mean, why not?
BeingEthan Exactly.
The sheer intensity of death metal and the rhythmic flows of hip hop to shape it, the true infusion would be diabolical.
Squatch Josh I mean slam death metal is kind of similar to that.
Portal 3 confirmed
Matthew Stirling don't try me
And half life 3
And l4d3
This is the shortest 9/10 review I've seen from Fantano.
FromRussiaWithLove #Stalin2020 I think his Helplessness Blues review might've been 10 seconds shorter but yeah I usually expect over 10 minutes when he gives such a high score
I'm actually pretty sure the Nails Unsilent Death review was the shortest
This is happening is shorter 😓
FOR EVERY1 H8ING ON THE VOCALS.....
Don't consider the vocals the centrepoint as they are in more popular genres - instead, consider them as a mere additional texture, not central to the mix, like just another percussive instrument.
The best metal vocalists don't even really sound human sometimes.
I love you all.
Yeah, vocals in a great deal of metal genres play a very different role than vocals do in other genres, or even in more classical forms of metal.
That’s the thing that makes Metal, especially more extreme and experimental Metal, really niche. The way you perceive Metal isn’t the way you’d perceive other forms of music. To most people it “just sounds like a bunch of noise” but to people who like it we consider things like musical texture, convolution, unconventional musical structure, the role that vocals play in music which is very different in Metal, and experimentation.
So many people won’t like that. They want something more easily digestible and that’s fine. It’s like how lots of people don’t vibe with surrealism. I’ve met a lot of people who don’t like Salvador Dali because it’s not conventional enough for them to enjoy. That’s just some people.
Travis Ryan and Phile Bozeman don't really sound human to my ears and sound amazing.
These vocals are so unique to me. It's like some sort of demonic half whispering preach some times. I love that it's really just for some moments there. what really makes them carry the tracks into deeper darkness.
Really one of my all time favourite vocals in metal.
He's basically emperor Palpatine on vocals.
CAN I GET A NUMBER 9, A NUMBER 9 LARGE
NUMBER 9... NUMBER 9...
EXTRA -DICK- DIP
WITH CHEESE
Number 7
And a large cheese
Tried to listen to this but I felt like an old lady listening to gangster rap.
Kemal Mehmet LOL , yea not for me
oha naber lan türk buldum
Weakest excuse in the book
What do you mean excuse? I listened to the whole album, I didn't like it.
Kemal Mehmet don't listen to him, glad you gave it an honest listen. Certainly not for everyone, even for death metal fans.
Anthony gives a portal album a 9. I can die in peace now. *dies*
rip
Went to your year anniversary mass. We still think of u every day when we listen to portal. R.i.p
review the new king gizzard album, anthony, it's the least you can do after ignoring their first 3 2018 albums.
what the fuck they've made three albums already? Well, maybe he doesn't want to review all their albums because his channel will become over saturated with king gizzard
issa joke
Parsa Rathernotsay The joke went over your head...
lmao
thats a phat r/woosh
Yellow flannel in a metal review?? Crazy.
August Campbell it's been awhile, 4 years since he gave a 9 to a metal record
Jewstein 3 years if you count ghost.
Slimy_the _horrible_Guitarist behemoth got 9 but idk if it was 2014 or 2015
2014
Slimy_the _horrible_Guitarist yeah but I was counting the year 2015
Love it when metal gets that yellow flannel
This made me nostalgic for old Fantano.
Ed Bartholomew Back when he used to review a lot of metal :,v
When he used to review a lot of anything other than rap
Back when underground music was the focus of the channel. I’ll always love Fantano but I don’t give a shit about all the rap and pop reviews
DC Blunt this. 90% of reviews are for no name meaningless pop shit
DC Blunt Fantano is a sellout but it's okay because it's his job. A man's gotta eat.
If you aren't really familiar with metal, don't go into this expecting Iron Maiden type stuff. In fact you could argue that this is closer to noise music like Pharmakon. With this band it's less about the riff and more about the horrific atmosphere the whole creates.
DreamPurpleFloyd Yeah, really hard for me to enjoy 😕
@@jaidsalgado
That's fine, man. It's not everyone's thing, clearly. I'm a metalhead, so I'm a bit weird automatically.
That’s a great description. The riffs are absolutely terrifying and disturbing. Really haunting stuff.
Yeah... if you aren't familiar with metal, I wouldn't recommend that you start with Portal.
The issue is with music like this we're hitting the point where "metalhead" is too vague. You'd be hard pressed to find a metalhead who can't enjoy some Black Sabbath or Judas Priest. But once the music starts to bear resemblance to large, industrial mining drills fucking each other while someone is choking to death, you lose me. A metalhead can mean someone who listens to Portal, or a guy who's really into stoner metal. Makes me wonder if the stuff I listen to sounds worse to people who are into stuff like Portal.
Dear Anthony,
This album reminds me of my younger days at Harvard Universite. I admit, I am still bitter that Dominique left me for you.
Your brother in Christ,
Lil Pump
(Ouu!)
Benjamin Smith I foreshadow a lot of thumps
ahahahah this is amazing
Thumbs holy fuck
gotem
Listening to this album in bed at 3 in the morning was a very intense experience.
reece Holmes hey, I did that too, then I followed it with the newest Impetuous Ritual and felt incredibly disturbed
sleep paralysis demon enjoys that album a lot
anything released on Profound Lore is an automatic classic. that label kills.
Lorrendale Johansen I loved Mirror Reaper. That was my favorite metal record of last year hands down
Fantano seems to do Profound Lore at least once a year
It's normie metal for the most part lol.
yeah Prurient is totally normie lel
Sam Ogden so what are you a Goatowarex fuck boy?
Great review. I wish you reviewed more metal.
Thomas Draper yep
Okay, now review Portal 2.
ESP Ion Age
Espionage
Did you just quick review a 9/10 album?
Woah melon reviewing a metal album :/ this melon > other melon
Now everybody go and dickride this album until death metal become the most popular genre of the World and Anthony runs for president of Mexico
Alex Marmolejo it's been 4 years (5 years if we're specifically talking about extreme metal) since he gave a metal album a 9, praise the lord!
Jewstein It seems like it's been 5 years since he's reviewed a metal album period lol Hope he does more of these. I like hip hop but I love metal too.
This album is great! Awesome to hear Aussie metal getting praise from the melon.
Blonde hair, rosy cheeks ... and a brown eye.
Wish he would give other Aussie bands a go, we have some ridiculously good metal bands
@@JoshuaConnorMusic I love portal and convulsing.
Man, if you love this I bet you'd love the new Impetuous Ritual album. It's a few members of Portal with I think a different vocalist and their newest album is just as great as this in my opinion. It came out last summer but I'd still be stoked to see you do a review of it
I was completely captivated. It felt like my whole body was transported. The final track Olde Guarde was simply incredible.
I like Husk the best, mostly because of the end of the song. It just keeps going, and never stays the same. For some reason I always have it playing in my head, the way the riffs change and merge into one another. It's incredible.
I highly recommend returning to Vexovoid after this. I wasn’t big on it at first, but it takes quite a few listens to pick everything apart. It’s definitely my favorite Portal album until now.
Nice, finally someone reviews something I've been looking forward to for awhile. Solid review, great record.
For people going to check out this album:
If you are not the kind of person open to musical structures being fucked with and experimented on you’re going to hate this. I’m not saying “you won’t get it, man” or anything pretentious like that. I’m saying it’s noisy, it’s experimental, it doesn’t use conventional song structure and it doesn’t give a fuck.
If you’re expecting anything with a 4/4 time signature and relatable lyrics about relationships or life you’re gunna have a bad time. It’s Portal.
This shit went hard af
Harry Melrose Foreal, there was a song in my discovery from this album and it floored me.
so you give Culture 6 by Me Amigos a 12 but Goddamnit by Kendarius Rucker a 1?
uh what?
Nachiketh Anand well, you tried
AliensDidIt that’s all that matters lmao
Literal 'laugh out loud' from me. One thumb up to give is not enough.
Nachiketh Anand good shit post
They tuned in standard for this album vs using 8 string guitars as their earlier stuff. PRETTY COOL MAN.
I'd love to see a review of the new Go! Team album. I was disappointed that you didn't cover their last album and their style seems right up your alley.
This album really is that good. I haven't been able to stop listening to it, and I was anticipating it for a long time, 5 years since a Portal record, and I heard through the grapevine they scrapped a lot of material due to being unsatisfied with it. I'm glad they took their time to craft something so freakishly extreme.
9???!!! Ok I have to listen to this now
Tristan Corbellari How’d it go? I honestly can listen to a lot of stuff but...this...this is fucking terrifying like I can’t enjoy this...even though I love some death and black metal.
Lambo So I take it you've never heard Revenge or Antediluvian? Also, this really does deserve the yellow flannel, sick fucking album.
I'd highly recommend this band if you're into Mythos and Lovecraft.
I'm not loving the vocals too much but the instrumentals are some of the most mind-bending shit I've heard in a minute
listen to more metal and you'll get used to vocals. it took me years to get into that. i didn't think i could enjoy something like that ever but i was wrong
I loved the suffocating feeling of their old sound. excited to hear this new stuff
Awesome review, Anthony! Speaking of dystopian records, what do you think of Lustmord's The Word as Power album?
I preordered this album and profound lore got it to me before it came out
This record is incredible and never gets old for me
Awesome review! I'm going to revisit this album soon on CD!
Good video Anthony but i certainly don't feel that calling the lead singer a f****t c**t was that necessary.
@@arunkeshavadas7171 I'm pretty sure it started after The Fader published a nonsense hitpiece claiming that Anthony panders to the alt-right with his (now deleted) second channel thatistheplan.
After that people started joking that Anthony puts racist and pro-Nazi messages into his videos like "nice video Anthony, but did you really have to start singing 'Deutschland über alles' while performing a Hitler salute half way through?"; silly things like that. And then it kind of evolved from there into Anthony just doing generally bad/gross/mean things in his videos, like in the above comment.
Ion even know how this got a nine
wWMxMWw are you proud of yourself?
Deen ion even know anymore
Because it's a great album.
Thanks for showing me this band. It’s like a steampunk Aussie the locust but death tech. Pretty refreshing avant- grade stuff. Not for everyone, definitely music for musicians.
I love that he gave this a 9 and will make people go and have a listen, credit if you guys do that. But you can’t just go from knowing a few Metallica songs then try to understand Portal. This is the beauty of extreme music, you need to build up to this over numerous years to understand what is going on.
Bro there’s nothing going on it’s literally just noise it’s an excuse for metal fans to feel different it’s not really that deep
@@adrianfong5783 Metal isn't actually noise, if you want noise listen to actual noise artists like Merzbow or Noise Rock or Noisecore work too. If you don't like metal then its probably better not to comment.
@@adrianfong5783 Not sure they were saying that it's a "deep" album. They're right in saying that you can't just jump into an album like Ion if you're not at all familiar with extreme music. Also, the argument of "it's just noise" is so dumb. People were saying that about the earliest forms of Rock and Metal, before extreme metal ever existed.
@@jamgrieve people still say that about metal even Black Sabbath Lmaoo so take it from somebody that listens to it and plays it when they say that this does legitimately sound like just noise.
@@adrianfong5783my guy wants musician cred for playing Black Sabbath riffs lmao
Portal came out with this album in January, now VTTA has come out with a new album. 2018 has been bookended by some awesome stuff.
Yooo are those some Nazca lines on the album cover???? If they are that's sick
I would love a review of the new Awolnation record. You haven't talked about them before, as far as i know. Think many people will be interested in it as well.
Do AMEN-Rich Brian
TRT The Real Thing He will, very soon
4/10 calling it
JordR I'm betting 6 or 7
Decent 6 guys 😂
Jake Adams well I was right :)
Love the extreme metal reviews
Thanks for recommending this, Anthony. It's a goddamn beast of a record.
Hated this at first but I LOVE this album now. Thanks, Anthony.
Is this even real life ?!
Dere he is
But he call them Tech Death... Whaa??
Maelstrom Of Horror he also calls nails metalcore.
Lol
Vid Koželj yeah but they're still not a metalcore band lmao.
Metalcore is not metal + punk lol. Maybe closer to metal + pop punk, but certainly not hardcore.
the outro of the final track Olde Guarde is one of the scariest things I've ever heard. It's like some farmer in 1910 built a homemade device to pick up radio but he tuned into some broadcast of an interdimensional entity preaching some inhuman sermon to its various cults across the multiverse and you're hearing something human beings were never meant to. I love the sensation that what you're listening to somehow hasn't even been created by humans at all, or isn't intended for them- Erich Zann style
enter shikari had a song on their last album called revolt of the atoms
this one has a song called revolt of volts and the album is called ion
Review the single The Silent Life by Rivers of Nihil. Super ambient, heavy, well produced, and has saxophone solos. What more do you want from tech death?
My largest compliant is how quietly the percussion is mixed, it feels flaccid, and lacks the impact of a lot of acts in their class
Or even of their previous albums.
I tried, but it's really hard to listen to lmao
That's kinda the point
It's hard to listen to for people that LIKE death metal. It's really great though. Bands like Portal and Gorguts are revitalizing what was becoming a stale genre for me personally. Music like this is going to take a bit to settle in for new listeners. I bought my first Gorguts CD and didn't end up liking it for 2 years lol
Review Rich Chigga album
Jessica McCarthy just did got negative 3
I was hoping you'd review this
I would absolutely love to see a video covering Admiral Angry "Buster" or Black Sheep Wall "I Am God Songs"
Thanks for the review fantano, but can you please review the new Rich chigga album (yes I know he changed his name)
Thank you for reviewing this!!!
How one man can review Pissgrave and Portal, and not do more metal uploads? Huh Pissthony Gravetano?
Fuck yeah, was waiting for this!
Portal is like if Gorguts, Morbid Angel, and Deathspell Omega did a three way and had an evil baby that fucking hates everyone.
Hey melon could you review the studio debut album of handsome ghost- welcome back. I’d just like to here your opinion
I love when Anthony describes Death Metal music.
Please review the new Rich Brian (Chigga) album Amen. 14 tracks, 45 minutes; with features such as fellow 88rising artists Joji and NIKI. Along with Offset (surprisingly) on the song “Attention”, and AUGUST 08 on the song “Arizona”
I was not going to give it a listen but your review changed my mind
Instantly knew this could be my favorite Portal album when I heard Phreqs. We'll see. I'll report back in a year or 2 when I understand it...more.
4 years later what's the report
More reviews like this! Greetings from México 😈
So, as I learn more about music, I start appreciating genres I didn’t care for/ignored before. Metal is one of those genres, and after listening to the album I really love the instrumentation and composition of metal, but I still can’t get over one thing. The voices. How do I appreciate metal grunts and growls? I love the stuff MC Ride does, but I just can’t vibe with this. Maybe just too plebeian I dunno
I don't know if you've ever listened to an Opeth album, but Mikael Akerfeldt (on older albums anyway) switches between growling and very soft, regular singing. The Drapery Falls is a great example, maybe you should give it a try.
Midas Baijense sounds interesting, I’ll give it a listen
It's an acquired taste, you have to acclimate yourself over time. Opeth is a great band to start with as someone else mentioned
you probably just have to listen to it more and you'll come to like it. doesn't work for everyone, though, and I still hate Varg's whiny screeching
Starting with thrash metal is a good idea. It has intense guitar work and the vocald are still gritty but there aren't any growls or screams. Then, you can build up to stuff like death metal and black metal and accumulate a taste for growling and screaming.
*Recommendation*: Blue Madonna by BØRNS is a fun listen. Loved it and I'm not usually a fan of pop.
hmmm....after your review I gave ION a 4th shot. I still feel that VEXOVIOD had more of a coherent structure and theme to it (in short: 7 songs, 7 circles of hell). I wish ION had more songs like Spores (nice Noise integration), when I look at the artwork I think of that song. Merzbows Pulse Demon`s electric Noise would fit them very well. I hope they expand their sound more and add some industrial noise. Still ION is a good listen if you wanna challenge your ears!
hey melon could you please review Quit the Curse by Anna Burch? I wanna know what my opinion on that album should be
Anthony please review the new Tribulation album “Down Below”!!
That Rich Brian - Amen review better be coming soon :^)
R I C H B R I A N R E V I E W *melon*
NOW
ive just watched your 2010's plastic beach review lol
this is a solid start to february
Do amen please!
Why'd you wear the yellow if it was a strong 2?
You have to promise me you will review the new High On Fire... Electric Messiah when it drops this coming fall.
Would this be a decent album for someone who's never listened to metal before? I'm interested in getting into the genre but I'm not sure what to listen to or what to listen for.
No way. Try bands early bands like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Mortorhead, Judas Priest, Megadeth and Metallic to get s sense of the genre of metal. Than see if you can delve into harsher and faster bands like Morbid Angel, Death and Possessed.
Great video Melon, when will you review Nickelback?
Yorkieinthemill when they make music worth his time to review
But I liked the muddy sound of the band's other albums
I was not expecting to hear that word so early at 1:41
I SWEAR WE MET AT GUITAR CENTER YESTERDAY NO JOKE IT WAS THE ONE IN SACRAMENTO IN ARDEN YOU WERE PLAYING A TELECASTER AND I ASKED YOU TO PLAY WONDERWALL I WAS PLAYING A SIX STRING BASS
he lives in conneticut
Good call. That explains ION :
"It feels like i'm being whispered to in tongues by some kind of lightning demon, while I'm being hypnotized by these incredibly...just difficult to decipher tech death riffs".
But it's a genre on it's own. Nothing compares, to my knowledge, to Portal. End of story.
Waitin for that AMEN review you feel me
Review the new Mammoth Grinder-Cosmic Crypt!!
thank you for reviewing this, melon
does anyone know if he ever listened to relentless mutation by archspire?
Ive never been much of a metal fan but the instrumentation on this album is absolutely incredible. I do feel that I would have enjoyed the record more without the vocals. Maybe I'm just not as used to it as someone who listens to more metal. I found myself just wanting to appreciate exhilarating electric sounds swirling rapidly toward me and the vocals were distracting me from that. Do any of you like the vocals?
William R I mean do you expect Michael Jacksons vocals in this album?
@@Mothlover69 lol no of course not. I'm just not used to it I guess.
Not expecting Portal to get a 9. I always thought they were an ok band with a great vision for presentation. Now I'm curious.
Okay I need to listen to this. I want to listen to more groundbreaking death metal.
If you're new to this style then avoid this with all costs, not because it's bad but it's anything but accessible to new comers.
Jewstein I'm not necessarily new to the style, but I guess I haven't been listening for that long. I like bands like Artificial Brain and Behemoth.
Definitely check out the latest Abyssal album. Beautiful death metal is hard to find but that album really makes it work
SuperLuigi22 ok then go ahead and try it but know that this isn't one of those bands you come for a catchy hook or riff.
Listen to pissgrave
Evidence's Weather or Not has to be next. Best album of the year so far in my opinion.
Well I liked the instruments but I just couldn’t get into it. I guess it all a matter of taste. Glad you enjoyed it tho
loving the beared man!
Yeah, turned a corner production and compositionally on this. Neighbors love it.
Can you review the Rich Brian's album Amen?
Who are the lead vocalist's influences? Cookie Monster and Jabba the Hutt? (thanks Pablo Francisco, it still applies)
