Have in mind this is 1970. For me the first heavy metal album. This song is among many lists of the top 100 rock songs of all time.

They one of the unsung founders of metal. Musicianship at its best. Especially live

… Rock music is explained like this: There's a lead guitar, an organ, a bass, a singer, a drummer... and there's DEEP PURPLE!! … There is nothing more to say! 🎸🎹🥁🎤 Thank you

This is an anti-war song. No words in the chorus but his sorrow, it's just so powerful! In 1970 Hard Rock was The Who, Kinks and Rolling Stones. Although they all hated the term at the time Deep Purple, along with Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin were labeled the first Heavy Metal bands by the music press, because their music was louder darker and heavier than the Hard Rock of or before that time period.

The church like quality you refer to might stem from the fact that Jon Lord the keyboardist (R.I.P), was classically trained and under heavy influence of Johann Sebastian Bach’s baroque music, which of course also have been very influential on church music. This influence on Jon Lord’s work is easily seen in his solos in songs like ‘Burn’ and ‘Highway Star’.

A big part of it is the distinct tone of the Hammond organ he plays, it was originally marketed primarily to churches, as a less expensive way to get something resembling the pipe organ sound

Deep Purple has a great catalog to check out, especially the MK2 and MK3 lineups. Also check out the guitarist (Ritchie Blackmore) next band called Rainbow with Ronnie James Dio on vocals. The song "Stargazer" is a must. "Kill the King", "Light in the Black", "Man on the Silver Mountain" & "The Shed" are other great songs to check out.

Ian's voice is smooth as butter. This song, I've heard a thousand times easily, is still my favorite, side by side with Elvis doing Unchained Melody.

Great song, i personal like the 1972 version from Osaka better, the [intermezzo] solo.

Hummm...no veo emoción en tu reacción. Ésta es una obra de arte!!
Pienso que no has entendido a Deep Purple.
