  • Have you ever wondered how opera singers are able to sing so many notes so easily? Mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux is known for her incredible ability to sing coloratura, or highly ornamented vocal lines. While every singer is different and may require different solutions to help them achieve their goals, here are some solutions to singing that Genaux has found in her own journey as an artist.

personal as her technique may be, her accuracy in rythm and singing every tiny note exactly at pitch is a dazzling achievement that, honestly, most of otherwise excellent singers get more or less right at best, at that speed. And her voice doesnt sound strained at all to me. On top of that she has brilliant hight and astounding power and depth in her lower register. I can only deduct from all that that her singing technique must be really good....but it would be silly to give someone mere merit on his or her singing technique, when the output is fantastic

Don’t open your mouth if your “point” isn’t based in tangible reality. We get it, you’re a hater that’s gonna hate. But you’re a nobody with no achievements and while you’re pop cover singin ass sitting in your pjs picking apart an artist, she’s a major performer of the baroque on every operatic stage from San Francisco to La Scala. Get wrecked hoe.

I love it and admire her all the more after this video.
It is very rare if not unique that a singer openly and publicly admits about a certain “imperfection” in her technique.
Her articulation in fioritura is of course not the free floating legato standard of Bel Canto technique, it is certainly more labored and the knowledgeable listener can’t miss that nevertheless it isn’t an imprecise struggle that we hear with Coloratura wannabes who obsess butchering scores they don’t have the instrument for.
Similar to this case is Deutekom. In my opinion one of the greatest sopranos in history whose overall technique, astonishingly powerful and precise instrument and artistic intelligence far outweighed her peculiar glottal legato in fioritura passages.
Different case is Bartoli. She is simply too labored and mannered and her gargling kills the whole score for me.

@@berzubirze She sings with constricted jaw, tongue and ugly nasal sound (beacuse her velum has wrong position). A lot of technical flaws....but if you happy with it, enjoy! She doesn't sing a single OPERA SOUND. Lower larynx with free released air is the condition for opera sound. You can even see, how she is forming fioritura with her lipps. Real opera sound is produced with VOCAL CORDS. And that's what we call supported sound.Firm, solid sound with core. And not just breathy wwwwwwww. But as I said: if you like it, sure, go for it.

Taboo about singing techniques or difficulties with your voice is restricted to the classical world. In all other music genres people talk openly about it. No big deal. Because we are all here to learn from each other, that `s whatt music is, or should be about. It`s not a protected formula for the knowledgable few you have to guard with your life, like the ancient alchemists formula to turn mud into gold. Halas, for those singers who thought a perfect technique is what true musicianship is all about. It `s not. Vivica Genaux has more musicianship in her little toe then you negative commentators have in your whole inflated egos

I'm not a musician but i really don't understand why she's famous though bad vocal technique. She sounds very strange and her insane jaw's work is not good. Diaphragm must work to create vibrato and to sing thrills but not a jaw. Vivica herself honestly admitted here that she likes to sound "ugly". Good words! But it doesn't means that people want to hear ugly and weak singing from such a famous singer! Her Agitata da due venti is a whole tutorial how you MUSTN'T sing if you want to sound good!..

actually, it `s not that much of a secret. A lot of excellent singers, classical, pop, rock, chanson, all genres you can imagine (but probably you only live in the Protected Habitat of Classical Music) use onortodox and personal singing techniques to acchieve great sound. Mostly a very unique sound, and not necissaryly very pleasing to the ear at first. But a good technique they developed, otherwise you dont have a career. God, when do classical musicians and singers come down from their ivory tower and learn a thing or two from the rest of the world....classical western singing is like...5 percent or so of existing music...a lot of classical singers i listnen to have ONLY technique, but are utterly boring to listnen to. I prefer a flawed or `personalised` technique above a lifeless performance
