  • Canadian coloratura soprano Claire de Sévigné is busy preparing for a year abroad, singing in Salzburg and Zurich for the 2015/16 season. She still took the time to tell us a bit about how she does the vocal pyrotechnics she's known for.

      Takes much more work for me to sing the lower notes. The higher it goes, the more comfortable I am. I can sing sustained passages very high, but though I can reach low notes, I can't sing sustained passages in my lower register. Too much strain. No strain in head voice.

    Sopranos are the reason why I started listening to opera. One of my voice teachers was a soprano, who became the muse for several poems. I crushed on her for years and still do think of her sometimes. Female opera singers are always special to me.

    • @karliharden728
      @karliharden728 Před 4 lety +6

      I met a working coloratura (she does paid performances to this day) and she would only sing up to an E6. She couldn't sing things like Queen of the Night, but she could do plenty of other roles. I would say it depends on your region and what places/people you work with. You technically don't HAVE to do anything, but if someone else can sing what you can and better, you won't be first choice. If you have a high tessitura and a lot of flexibility in your vocal folds, you could very well take on a coloratura role. If you're under the age of 25, don't judge yourself too much. Just work at your technique and you might be able to get a few extra half steps. You look quite young, so just wait until your voice is fully developed. I know a talent scout for broadway/classical and she doesn't take musical theater students over the age of 20, but she also won't take classical students under the age of 25 lol

    That's pretty incredible. I simply do not have that kind of range. My question is, are runs and trills supposed to be really difficult to learn? I'm not sure, but I think I might be able to do them... I've never been taught anything, so I have no idea if what I'm doing is an actually a trill or just some kind of strange interference in the back of my throat (it's super hard to explain), but I think it maybe sounds kind of like trills, and fast scales are basically effortless, except I have a hard time landing solidly on a note because that weird trill/vibrato/whatever thing keeps taking over. It tends to come and go, but pops up unexpectedly in all parts of my range, which is definitely lower than yours, but also just more limited, in general. Is there a way to easily increase range? I can't even imagine getting those high notes, let along getting anything to sound like that!
