STARTING A FREE 225HP Boat That's Been Sitting For YEARS

- A free boat is usually the most expensive boat you could ever own. Josh @TheFracturedRooster just got this 1988 Checkmate Starflite for free and it's crazy nice. Small, overpowered, set up for fishing and recreation, there's only one question, will it run? It's been sitting in storage for 4 years, the batteries are old, but the 225HP Evinrude VRO outboard engine is a simple 2-stroke... hopefully it'll come right back to life. If it runs we're not too far from getting it on the water!

Just saying, the "streaker" is a 13 year old girl in a dress playing hide and seek with her brother. 🤔
was about to say who the heck is that at 1 minute in the episode just causally trying to sneak on past the Recording session XD
Watched this on my phone and was wondering!🤣
The way the camera picked up her clothes made it look like a streaker had snuck in or something. lol. The warehouse looks like a place i want to come and hang out and maybe play hide and seek. Keep up the good work and the place looks amazing. Your hard work is paying off.
Well that's much more wholesome. I bet that's a fun place to play as a kid. It's hard to tell who it is in the video, but we didn't want to make it weird.
I am so glad you pinned this comment!
Josh has his boat for the Cleetus challenge with a full $2500 left in his budget for repairs. Domination!
Starting fluid is the enemy of 2 strokes! It washes away all the fuel/lubrication from the crankshaft.
First thing I thought when I saw that 😬😬😬 can’t believe all these “mechanics” don’t know that or don’t care enough!!
@@crbetwistin he also messed up the impeller by starting it dry but it probably has to be changed anyways
Starting fluid. OMG!! And checking for spark in front of a cylinder hole with fuel vapor. DUH. Looking for trouble.
Also said it has a cam
If you're dropping the lower unit to replace a seal you might as well install a new water pump impeller while it's down. The rubber fins will develop a memory over time or deteriorate so the lower unit already dropped it's worth installing one for insurance.
Absolutely. Especially for such an inexpensive/important component
I was coming here to say exactly this.
Nah you good. Just save the money
He said he's doing the seal and water pump.
really shouldn't ever run an outboard with no water. The pumps die quick, but after 5 years its toast anyway. The old manuals actually said annual, my '07 Evinrude is every 3 years.
Did anyone see someone running in background at 1:03
Yeah, it looked like a streaker!
And unless you pause it, it appears to be naked! 🤣
That boat could be a collectable. It is a Checkmate from the 80s and they where kind of iconic even back then. Keep it neat and tidy and don't use starting fluid on a 2 stroke.
Before towing to the lake replace the water pump impeller & take apart the trailer wheel hubs to make sure all the wheel bearings are good. Bothe inboard & outboard bearings. Smoking a wheel bearing to or from the lake is a real bummer!
I loved Checkmates back in the 80's when I was in my late teens early 20's. They looked like they were going 100mph just sitting in the water. Most of the ones on my lake were jet boats. When you test it make sure the Wizard is yachting he can tow you if need be.
You have a streaker! lol
I had to rewind it to make sure I actually saw that lmao
Was someone streaking through your video at the one minute mark?
Fun fact: 1 minute in a streaker runs across the shop. Random boat episode complete with random streaker appearance. JR always surprising us folks. 😜
Was just about to post about that… and his lack of a cool T-shirt just like *this one*!!!
I'm guessing that is one of Josh's kids in skin-tone shirt and shorts.
@@murrys5444 The body language (no pun intended )inferred that he didn't want to be seen. Like he took a shower and found out he forgot his towel in the other building.
Literally has a dress and shoes on but ok.
I honestly saw a light color shirt and Khakis
0:59 A Streaker Escapes!🏃♂️👤🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
You MUST replace the rubber water pump impeller , it will be stuffed .
Looks like someone is running around the shop naked in the background. lol
We're going streaking to the quad, let's go!
I was looking for the comment about the streaker
I'm impressed with the packaging of outboard engines. To put a 3.2 liter 225hp V6 in such a small package is no easy feat.
Indeed, but being a two-stroke helps a LOT - apparently they even made a V8 version. They were direct-injected two-strokes in the early 2000's, which was pretty cutting-edge for any gasoline-powered engine.
@@Timmayytoo that’s badass! After this video, I’ll go look them up!
Evinrude is no longer in business.
Also theres no real complex, self contained cooking system. Water pump and it pulls water from the lake so there's no radiator, coolant bottles, etc. Two stoke as well so there's no valvletrain either.
If that technology was put in a car it would be awesome.
The oil that you saw when it first started may have been oil that was put in the carbs to winterize/store it. I know people that put oil in the carbs to keep them from gumming up with old gas, and some even remove the sparkplugs and put a little oil on the pistons when storing their boats to keep the rings oil-wet so that they don't seize. Manufacturers of boat engines and even ATV/UTV manufacturers put oil in the carbs and cylinders of every unit and during the dealerships PDI they're started and ran so that they burn that oil out. I'm not sure the exact oil the manufactures put in the carbs/cylinders, but it's a clear-colored oil. I put Marvel's Mystery Oil in mine before storing them.
That is a really cool boat, It's something people don't see very often if ever.
“I got it. You call my brother-in-law, Billy Bob. He's got the fastest boat in the whole damn river.” - Sheriff J.W. Pepper 😉
But his was a Glastron.
You are going to like this. Checkmate, was my first factory job out of high school.
I helped build THAT boat. I taped off the mold for the multi color gelcoat. The boat is a Starflite. They had an open bow version of the same hull called a Starliner.
The Starflite was probably Checkmates most popular boat back in the day. We built roughly 3 of these a day.
Guard those, cooler lids, if you lose them, I have the molds and can build you new ones.
You are going to have a lot of fun with that boat.
That engine sounds so badass.
Hope you enjoy the boat Josh. Enjoy it a few times at least. 👍
Oh Man, you guys have all the new stuff! 45 years ago all we had was a spot light and a 6D cell flash light to navigate at night~~
@1:00 was that a naked person running though the shop?
Right 😂😂😂😂
No, it's Josh's daughter, she's wearing a dress and playing hide n' seek 😂
First video I ever saw was when JR bought that old boat years back. Excited to see where this goes. I also used to have an 88 evinrude 150 xp two stroke. Things are bulletproof man, mine had me at 60+ WOT
Corvette then a boat. You’re spoiling us.
Sounds absolutely amazing love two strokes 👌
4 years is nothing 7 years is the lowest we have done. Just got one running after 18 years sitting in a field here in Massachusetts runs mint. Boat motors are pretty tough half the time people think they're broke and it's a ten minute fix lol.
these guys are gonna be the surprise entry in the $2500 cleetus boat challenge.
Man Check Mate boats are bad ass it's a very fast hull...I've had a few of them I had one just like that it had a Mercury 300R V8 outboard on it...it would go over a 100 like it was nothing....alot of guys down in Miami like to take the windshields off of them I cant stand the way they look with out it.
Nice thing about 2 strokes, the oil generally has a preservative in it so when you wake them up after a few years there are less carb problems and gumming up...less, not none.
No such thing as a free boat, but I’ll watch! And don’t forget to change the water pump.
At lest he's doing the smart thing and selling it immediately. LOL!!!!
He states that he is changing the water pump at the end of the video
@@galvingray all I heard was “seal” but likely if he’s in there he’ll do that anyway. I don’t always hear everything either!
Our boat we got for free was a 1976 tuffy 2 with a Johnson 35 horse power and last was used some where around 2000 to 2007 ( just a guess ) and the engine start right up . . . Man those old engines are so reliable even the boat was in almost perfect condition . The engine was original.
That 225 Rude sounds sick! I want it lol. I had a VRO 120 Rude Looper that ran like a top, would push my 19' Bowrider at 50mph all day, had that engine on two different boats before I sold it. After the guy I sold the boat to put it in the water he had to call me and tell me how good the engine ran.
Those boats were made right here in my hometown of Bucyrus Ohio. Checkmate used to employe a lot of the area.
Please do something with the Rolls Royce...... I want to see it do a 1/4 mile
Nice video! Cheers from the Finger Lakes!
Sweet Checkmate, love the 2stroke! Get ready for the duck-walk at high speeds!
Back in the day Checkmate was the cats meow. Sounds like she'll 79mph, Had a friend who's dad built Mercury Racing Outboards. Some of those engines sounded like top fuel dragsters and were damn as fast! 80+mph in a 21ft bass boat is insane, or just stupid!
Very cool boat, Liked
You can replace the impeller after even running it dry for that short time. After sitting 4 years it will have been brittle and is now shredded. Don't ask me how I know this...
Yeah even if you use the boat every year you should change it every other year.
The impeller is shot. There should be a stream of water coming out of the lower engine cowl.
@@robertbeirne9813 has to get warm enough for the thermostat to open first
@@rossmiller7275 No, should squirt ALL the time the engine is running.
It does NOT take long to smoke an impeller and yes they could have done so in that 10 seconds. When they started it on the hose, you did eventually see the tell tale putting water out though it wasn't that strong.
Checkmate boats are awesome - wicked cool!
Love those Checkmates!!!!
Get some fresh mixed fuel in the tank. Drop the lower unit, change the oil and Impeller. Change spark plugs, fuel filters, and run a quick compression test. Make sure the Transom is solid by rocking the engine away from the boat. Bounce gentry on the cavitation plate. Bring spare fuel filters with you and give it a rip. The VRO system works but it's piece of mind with it deleted. Have fun and be careful. If there is water and crud in the tank it will get stirred up on the first sea trial. Spare fuel filters and a remote tank with fresh fuel is a good idea.....Love the channel.
Agree with all of this. Have seen JR start old cars with old shit fuel but boats really frown on it and get crud in the tank.
@@centralparkfitness and there are a lot of carbs to clean and sync there. Not a job for the carb novice. I bet JR could do it with a shop manual since he knows motorcycles.
VRO Stands for variable ratio oiling, it wasn't the best system, we always tipped a litre of oil in the fuel tank just in case it failed. The weak point in these engines is the lower unit gearbox, must be straight and direct on gear changes as the dog clutch will break, i think they were only rated for 200hp.
Yup..round these parts VRO is referred to as “very risky oiling”!
I have the exact same boat with a Johnson 225 these old boats are a ton of fun and super fast with some modifications
YAY BOATS! i just bought my first boat, bit of a fixer-upper.
Love the Boat content!!
The CHECKMATE was always the boat that turned all heads when it pulled up for gas at the dock.
Awesome design
I had to watch this twice, at 10 minutes in you talked about cams, at the end of the video you talked about smoke on start up, it's a 2 stroke, no cams and no smoke means it's about to seize!
That's one BADASS boat!
Watch out for the "checkmate wobble". Once you hit 50 MPH plus..the hull will start to do what is referred to as "chine walk". Controllable with practice..but dangerous for the uninitiated.
I don't know what JR's experience is with boats, I posted a similar warning, people underestimate Checkmates because they don't have big HP numbers, i'm guessing you have a Mate, so as you know bad idea. Shall we let him get used to it before telling him to put a jack plate on it ?
love Josh , awesome
When do you return the trailer? Lol. Don’t rev engine on hose pressure boys. Great boat in its day. Anyone remember the boat JR cleaned up two years ago? Had the OMC death drive.
Over
Bumpers - At 2:41, I am 90% sure those "bumpers" are actually equipment pads from a Curves fitness facility for women. Most of those are closed, so those would have been used/left over items. And specifically I think they are from the stretching station. Which is a great piece of equipment.
That motor sounds awesome, like a racecar!
Man never use starting fluid on a 2 stroke engine! You'll kill it!
That little bit won’t wreck the motor
Agreed never use starting fluid in 2 stroke
@@braaapattack2937 you will be suprosed how fast staring fluid can wreck a 2 stroke best thing for them to do is 1 use the choke/primer by pushing in the key and or a squirt bottle with mixed fuel.
Guess my snowmobile and moped I have for a race track run around item, both being 2 strokes are lucky. I don’t unload a can zip ties/peg style, but a quick sniff is the difference of killing a battery and grabbing a jump pack, and maybe getting it to start, then a short hit and gets it moving to get the fuel pump pumping and gas to the carbs
Great video.
Boat content! Awesome! On your way to 500k views!
Was somebody streaking in the background of the boat reveal?
CkMate...very kool boat. Erude?
Evinrude Outboard Motors was a North American company that built a major brand of outboard motors for boats. Founded by Ole Evinrude in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1907, it was formerly owned by the publicly traded Outboard Marine Corporation since 1935 but OMC filed for bankruptcy in 2000
That thing sounds pissed! Nice!
Break Out Another Thousand = BOAT! 😂 nice video
Wow, what range, Z06 and Admiral Josh. Free boat - you get what you pay for
It's a nasty 6 cylinder TWO STOKE with an exhaust that's modified big-time. Normally it's routes thru the prop to keep things quiet. Also like the intake 'reeds" and carbs have all been modded too. There ain't nuthin' like those final large two strokes from the late 80s. Raw and nasty!!!! Checkmates are fast hulls too. Be careful! Check steering for play and sloppiness! Also it really should have foot throttle if it doesn't.
the exhaust is stock... only mod is the exhaust relief on the midsection so it exits above the water instead of through the prop. it has velocity stacks, but do you have x ray vision to see inside the intake manifold and know if he put plastic leaf valves in it?
That is a really cool boat.
That engine sounds wild!!
Check the transom, stringers and floor, they are wooden, old Checkmates tend to have rot problems, not really a big deal, but better to catch now. You got what IMHO the best Checkmate, hell let me know when you are done with it and I will make an offer. Please understand one thing when you first take it out, respect the boat, it will get ahead of you in a hurry if you play around, Checkmates are quick, over 150hp on a Starflite are very quick.
Sweet trailer!
Boat sounds like a beast
at 12:40 there's a loose velocity stack on the bottom left carb.
Big 2 strokes sound amazing
That engine sounds mean: like an old school 2 stroke racing bike.......nice sound!
BTW: old engine/been stored a while? Always change the oil as well as the impeller.
Can save you from a lot of misery.
I had the same boat with a 200 merc I could trim it out too 65 mph. I’m sure that would go 75 easy. Can’t wait to see it in the water.
Check the water level in those batteries! If they're below the top of the lead plates (look inside w/ a flashlight) they aren't gonna charge. If they need topped up, use distilled water. They may come back!
Water level in marine batteries. Good joke. They are AGM which has no serviceable water/acid ports.
@@JohnDoe-zr6bk not a joke.
@@JohnDoe-zr6bk you were in the shop and saw they were agm?
12:35 that velocity stack on the carb is looks like it’s falling off, don’t let that motor swallow a bolt 😳
That Prestige Worldwide was awesome. Let's see how many people get the reference. Or do the rap.
Boats and Hoes
Hey guys don't forget about the speedometer needs replaced on it to still along with the water pump seal.
CB raidios are a must on the water 👍 nice looking boat
Nonsense
He's in Kansas. All they got are lakes and rivers. Cell service everywhere
That thing is in great shape! Though, still a boat, so still going to be costly. Sounds like that comes as a shock to neither of you though, which is good. :) MAN that V6's sound!
Back when my dad had an RV shop, he had SO much business from folks who wrecked their water impeller with "just a quick check that it starts" dry like this... often discovered when the engine seized out in the lake... make sure you have a good oar on board...
Did someone escape his cage at the one minute mark?
Damn Hoovie…
That sounds insane
Let’s see it on the water! 👍👍🤘🏻🤘🏻
Pretty good looking trailer.
That thing sounds absolutely bananas
Finally boat content
🥉 next, floating boat content!
The two happiest days of a boat owner's life: the day he buys it, and the day he sells it.
Lawdy that V6 sounds amazing :O
Doesn’t it? 🤔
If your dropping the lower unit make sure to put a new water pump impeller in too since they are rubber and they break off after a while and you end up with no water circulating and burn up the engine
I owned a all black 86' Checkmate, paid $900 for it. Had a inboard MerCruiser V6. That Checkmate is a lot nicer for sure.
Push the key in as you turn the key. That's the choke
its a primer, not a choke. push key in about 4x then turn over.
I lost my dad this past friday. I have no idea how I’m going to make myself deal with his boat and fishing gear.
Oh man, if you only did this at the beginning of summer!
Nice streaker JR
Damn nice freebie
Looks like Checkers the fast food place. Or Rally's if you outside Florida
Pop"s has good taste in boats. I like it
Break Out Another Thousand=BOAT
Been there done that! Have fun!
Well that's a pretty shiny boat. Even got the towing pole.
OMC 2 stroke V6 baby! these girls can put out some power!
That thing is going to be scary fast full throttle across the lake and it sounds real good.
This is the one Cleetus should been looking for.
