Are Wrexham heading to the Premier League? | BBC Sport - Sport
You simply cannot underestimate the job Rob and Ryan have done. They have hired the right people and have invested very wisely. They see themselves as stewards of the club and want the club to be in a fit and healthy state from the ground up. Everybody contributes
Yeah they could easily have been ego-driven owners making footballing decisions despite lack of experience etc. but they've shown real humility in the way they've run things
They injected their publicity to the club, so that the sponsorship and TV series money can be counted as the club's profit. Financial regulations aspect, they have critical advantage over the other richier owners in the EFL.
I can see them in the Championship, but getting them to the Premier League would be something else. Of course it’s possible, but once they are in the Championship their owners won’t be considered particularly rich.
THIS!
I remember they said they would find more funding or owners if they keep promoting.
@@kencube86they have lot of contacts in America and very very rich contacts hence the money won't be a problem for them
@@LEVI-hv8dw u never know. by the time they reach the championship the buzz can be over...
@@punicwars2 2 more seasons
i remember sitting in the cae ras with my mate on a cold day watching us draw to pretty bad teams, with a crowd of around 3,400. the club off the pitch was factional and divided , we had scant money and a stadium in disrepair. the future looked bleak. i cant get a ticket anymore but i still love the club and listen to the match when they play. the feeling is so posative and its all thanks to mr macelhenney who convinced ryan to take us over. its given the fans , the club and the town of wrexham a huge boost. ive been watching the documentary as well and its such a great advert for the club and its fans , also the personal storys are heart tugging creates even more strong bonds and makes everyone feel a part of this incredable journey. whatever happens next rob and ryan have changed us all and made us proud again i thankyou both from the bottom of my heart.
I can remember going in the mid 80's when 2,000 of us was considered a decent crowd!
I am a lifelong Arsenal fan, (since 1965), and I now have a second favourite side to follow, Wrexham. This is like a fairy tale come true as I just love what Ryan and Rob have done, not just for the team, but for the community. Long may their success continue.
Same but I am Chelsea fan
Same but I am a Liverpool fan
Lifelong football fan here (Liverpool if you must know), what I see in Wrexham is something I haven't seen very often for some time. They play as a team, work together even they are score behind (Yes, I know this is not good for our heart and health lol), and for most time they really came back winning!
Amazing vibe, amazing manager and players with support from the co-owners, keep on flying until you reach the cups! Also, their women's team is awesome as well! All win in the last season?!?! Seriously? That is something not many club could accomplished!
@@Charlie_Nice I don't think they are overhyped at all, look at their standing of the table right now, second in the standing!
Ryan and Rob brings in the money and publicity the club needed, running a football club is both sport and business.
Give them few more years then come back and say how wrong you are right now.
I'm a Liverpool fan from across the pond. The first game I ever saw was Daniel Sturridge's hat trick against Fulham. I have loved Liverpool and non-American football since then. Wrexham is hard to root against because the town goes as the team goes. The town has seen hard times and the team has as well. Now, the team is playing well and the town has hope.
Next season we could see Wrexham women in the UEFA Champions League and Wrexham men in EFL League One. It’s a good time for the Wrexham fans old and new if you are one. I’m certainly enjoying their success as a neutral. 🏴 🐉
No one cares about women’s football
Speaking of Wrexham, why do they, along with Cardiff and Swansea play in the Welsh division in the women's game, but their mens teams play in the English divisions?
@@jabron.destoroyah10 years ago i was done with football but somehow this due real piqued my interest in football again.
@@Ese96Agoaye I think a Welsh mens league wasnt formed until the 90s and all welsh top clubs declined to play for it and stayed in the enligsh divisions they were already playing in. When the english women league was formed I believe the welsh one was already in existence since the year prior.
Dont know to be honest though, just speculation on my part.
@@jabron.destoroyah na, Villa 😂
The championship will mess them up, it's such a higher level from league one, if Wrexham make it they'll remain a mid table club until they get real investment
So far, so good. Also seems like they have an easier time finding big money donors when the team reaches the Championship League
I think they will get back to back promotions next year i hope there in league 1 but its the championship where if they get there they'll struggle thats how I see it but i really do hope they succeed because ryan and rob are showing how to be good owners they clearly love the game and the club and the way they've run the club looks amazing
Thing about the Wrexham is, they do have great owners and Parkinson is probably one of the best managers at this level. Though a big help while in the National League and now L2 was recruiting several experienced players from higher divisions. Not so sure this could happen if they went up the leagues, getting the required players of quality in. The wages and fair play rules might be an issue too. Wrexham also have the biggest budget in League 2 this season so being in the top 3 isnt unexpected. And for every Luton or Bournemouth who made their way up to the top, there's a Bradford or Oldham going the other way. Cos these leagues and relentless and brutal on clubs. Look at Forest Green and Salford who also have wealthy owners but only gone so far. The wisest move for Wrexham would be to invest long term in their academy, get great coaches and facilities.
investing in their facilities was one of the first things they did. their strategy was to get out of the national leagues as fast as possible, so getting players who were too good for that league was the right thing to do. obviously that isn't a longterm strategy. and a big part isn't their personal wealth, but their ability to get better sponsors and make the club known to the public. that worked out great so far and that was something the other owners couldn't do that effective.
wouldnt say best manager at all honestly, so many tactical issues with him, very stubborn to late subs even when needed, it cost us so many games we 100% should've won with our quality of players
Small solid steps required, with consolidation at each level. Good luck to them but a quick ascent could lead to an even quicker descent.
Stop putting pressure on this club,
LEAGUE ONE will be a great achievement from non league.
Everyone can dream of the PL.
The 2 owners have done a magnificent job and the town has really benefitted.
Could easily be in the Championship with the money and fanbase they have. Premier league is a different beast altogether, it's not even enjoyable if you're getting battered every week.
Big step up league 2 from the top half of league 1 . Trust me big differences in style of play etc
Luton did it with no money, so it is possible
The big difference was Luton were a top flight club, spending many years there in the 1980s. They even came 7th in 1987 winning the League Cup. They were only relegated in 1992. As such they have a large legacy fan base. Wrexham as a team have never been higher than the second tier. They have never got anywhere near getting promoted to the top tier and they haven't got anywhere near winning an English cup.
Also think about Bournemouth and Brentford - a decade ago we would all have laughed at the thought of them playing in the top flight.
Cannot see them in the PL. They will do well in the Championship though. Cardiff and Swansea watch out. The North Wales team is catching you up. (They already have surpassed Newport)
I'm enjoying the ride - great entertainment with Wrexham putting on a show! I'd be happy reaching the heady heights of the Championship ... the chase is good. I can't stand VAR and not a Prem fan.
Hello from Burns Lake, Canada. I'm a fan of Wrexham and finally found a team to cheer for. Been a fan since last year when Ben starred in a Sidemen video and been a fan of him ever since and not to mention Calfrezzy's cooking video and that mac & cheese looked amazing.
Haha I'm from Canada and I just heard them say Luton Town! When I was 9 or 10 yrs old I flew over to visit family in Scotland but we were landing at Heathrow Airport and stayed with family for the night in Luton... I felt sick and fell asleep rolled up on the couch, but a few hours later woke up to a football house party and scared the crap out of everyone cuz none knew I was even there!! Turns out it was Luton Town Fc and they felt soo bad the entire team autographed a team ball as an apology for it.. wow I had totally forgotten all about it till now haha been 30 yrs since it happened but glad this reminded me of it!!!
Possible but not another 5-8 years..the gap is huge...look at luton burnley and shef utd now...
I remember in the very first visit when Ryan and Rob were taking questions from some reporters and fans, Rob straight up said he believed the Premier league was possible. It seemed naive at the time, but now...
Looks like they are going to get into League one. Think from there its going to be tough.
Impossible is nothing, perfectly lined up for an adidas sponsorship ;-) I mean.. it's possible and what a great story it would be. Would probably at least take a decade though, if not 2.
infrastructer, thats what any club needs to sustain whatever they want to achieve, you can buy anything if you have the initial funds, but keeping it is a different animal
No. The minute they hit top six in league 1 it starts getting real. The gap between league 1 and the championship is also huge now
Eventually why not, they’re only going to get stronger and stronger if the club sticks to this way of being run, they can get into the championship in 3 seasons easily but i see them battling it out for a good few years there before they are able to have a run at that final promotion.
I'd like to see Wrexham play Inter Miami exhibition match
Wishing them the bestestttt. Its our fairy tale!!
OMG I love Megan Feringa's accent.
They’ll get promoted again this season but I think once they reach the championship things will slow down
still would be a huge accomplishment
@@cupolove1 indeed
Once they reach it?
@@NmpK24 how on earth are you confused by the concept of reaching the championship? You know it’s the league below the premier league right?
@@NmpK24 yeah if they work their way up the pyramid. I think the current ownership team could take them that far, but they will need a lot more money to compete in the championship and way more in the prem
All the way baby! All the way!
It is simple to say that the key is money. It is only one of the keys. Self-belief is part of it too. To get the money requires that the brand extends. Merchandize and sponsorship are the sources for the money. Ryan has extended his personal brand to the club. Now the club has it's own international brand. That needs to grow. The existing team needs to get the results. continue to
If all these things continue to happen then it is possible.
Money is really important, but that requires the money to go to the right things, seems alot of owners in lower divisions have used their clubs for more, lets say nefarious purposes and havent really invested as much as exploited.
hahahaha Megan - "Have you ever seen a fairytale? there's always a stinking rich benefactor involved!"
Phil is the 'Parchitect'
Welsh Prem. No doubt. There are teams matching them like Crewe that have spent nothing. That is more of an achievement.
Wrexham need to fix their defense. No point scoring goals if you keep conceding soft goals.
Wrexham are 2nd place at the moment, if they able to jump into League 1 this season, they are on the right tract. Up the Wrexham !!
They're roughly League One sized. They might get to the Championship but they'll go back down again. Hopefully the media stop messing themselves over the owners and this hyperbolic nonsense can stop.
Getting smashed by a poor Blackburn side in the FA cup says not anytime soon, or not without upgrading ALL the league1/2 standard players.
yeah a league two side getting beaten by a championship side is not too surprising.
they're obv gonna get better players as they go up
I support Spurs and I had more fun following them when they were in the 2nd division than the Premier League.I just hate VAR.
For this question, they are showing their powers to get that chance.
They injected their publicity to the club, so that the sponsorships and TV series money can be counted as the club's profit. Financial regulations aspect, they have critical advantage over the other richier owners in the EFL.
Ok. I hope they do make it. But with the money they are spending and the talent they are buying...they should have an excellent chance.
i think it's possible, in about 8 years
I hope they reach the national League north instead
THEY WILL NEED MORE MONEY THAN THEIR FILM STATS CSN PROVIDE, IF THEY HET ANYWHERE NEAR WHAT OLDHAM DID THEY WILL BE LUCKY, OLDHAM WERE A GOOD TEAM AND WITH THAT TEAM AND LUCK AND 2 GOOD MANAGERS WE MADE IT IN 20 YEARS, I HOPE THEY HET THEIR BUT ITS A LONG HARD ROAD
Is the league Wrexham is in, the equivalent to triple-A in Major League Baseball? Wrexham is like the real-life version of Ted Lasso - First time I ever had any interest in soccer - Go Wrexham!!!
They are in League 2, which is 3 levels below the Premier League. In MLB terms, they are playing Single A ball right now…..
Before i even watch this, IF they do, and thats a big IF, they’ll be in for a huge rude awakening going up to the top tier of english football 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
I think ryan and rob have the potential to get the team to the premier league, but the main question is where is the money to get them there going to come from? Ryan and Rob of course are super rich but the premier league owners are the richest of the super rich so they will need to find a massive source of money to get the team to the chosen land.
Total kick in the face for teams who are actually top of their respective leagues in the EFL (Wrexham not being one of them). But hey! because it's Wrexham, let's all assume they will win every match and play in the PL.
@@mrp8008compare a team like Leicester city to Wrexham…
No Wrexham player would even make it into Leicesters youth team
@@magicjack4076 Insane take. Wrexham beat the Manchester United youth team, easily, and the ManU youth team is better than Leicester's youth team.
@@mrp8008 Brands are great and all that but the team has to do it on the pitch. Salford are part owned by Beckham and former Utd players. Doesnt mean they are destined for the Premier League. And Wrexham have the biggest budget in L2 so should be competing for promotion. Above that however it gets harder, money or not.
Knew Gareth bale? Why???
Golf
They can. They have people that invest in them.
Im rooting for them.
Sniffing glue if they think they’ll be in the prem any time soon unless their going to spend 30 million plus over the next 10 years. Going to need a whole new team to compete in league 1 and the championship
Max Cleworth, Aaron Hayden, Jordan Davies and Ryan Barnett have made it to the Premier League in my FIFA 23 career mode, with three of them being starters.
Think they're getting ahead of themselves a bit here...
If they get to 1, there will a considerable turnover in players. If they manage the championship, it’s a complete roster overhaul and a massive spike in $$. It’s just fun watching it.
thanks for stating the obvious
Not if, when they reach to 1, with 3 spots for auto prom, and 1 spot for playoffs, I don't see them not succeeding, and we still have the Jan window, I don't agree that there would be a big turnover next year when they be in league 1, but there would be when they reach championship, for sure.
I'm assuming they 99% going to get this year back to back promo, after that, I would say prob 1 year in league 1 to get used to the difference, and then a second year to actually getting promoted, so prob two years to get from 1 to champ. then prob 2-3 years to get from champ to PL
on another note, I don't think Parkinson would still be with them for more then a year in champ league. he's a great coach/Manager, but I don't think he's style is fitting for the upper leagues
One of the things Ryan and Rob did was offer to help all the players with setting up their own businesses, because they knew it won't last forever with them and at the lower levels the guys need to set themselves up for after their football careers. Top notch ownership.
@@MykalNines wow, thats a really good thing! I always feel thats one of the hard parts of fotball, that the players who got you promoted are often then left behind so this sounds awesome.
There is no question about it. Wrexham WILL be in the Premier League in about 5 years.
20 years maybe, def not 5
You might want to ask Salford City how difficult it is to make it to the next level, even if you are backed by millionaire owners. Could they be in league one? probably yes, with the right investments in players, but to stay in league one and not yo-yo year after year between one and two is another story.
The problem of Salford is that they don't make enough money. They have money, their owners are rich af, but due to EFL regulation, they simply cannot spend their money.
Rob and Ryan are actually better than most of the owners of EFL clubs because of that. They injected their publicity to the club, that is the huge advantage.
They’re nowhere near, don’t think the ownership has the money to take them past the championship without further investment
I think they are buying their way into the Premier league
They haven't got the money. They have division one money. If they are lucky maybe a year in the championship. They need maybe 100 million more. If an investor has that type of money Sheffield Wednesday or Sunderland would be a much much better investment. Most TV series don't last more than 5 or 6 years in the US.
@@davedavids57slot more than £100 million if you compare it to say Leicester city squad

*NOT UNLESS LOOOAAADDSSS IS SPENT - IT'S AS SIMPLE AS THAT*
I met John Majeski once of Reading FC ownership fame. He told me it shook him rigid how quickly owning a football club drained his millions.
3:08 bro completely underestimated Mansfield Town.
Wrexham fans getting bored of playing little clubs like "Havant and Waterlooville" is exactly how most clubs feel playing little old Wrexham
No
Im not gonna say no, but they got a looooooong way to go. Lets just focus on EFL1..
Yes but not next season obviously. They're in League Two.
Still think they will be in League 1 for a while after being promoted if things continue like they are now. I think Stockport will run the table if they can stay fit. The real story should be Notts County doing the same thing without the big famous owners and being nearly the top of the league without the Wrexham bank account.
Aren't Notts County owned by Danish businessmen of some means? Probably not Ryan money, but definitely Rob levels of money.
Notts County have the money - don't be fooled.
Why do people think that Notts is running on willpower and not massive investments by their danish owners? Not taking anything away from Notts but its not like they have this magical ability of running a club without money, they would be totally bankrupt without their owners, so I dont see why people are always saying this. And this is not uncommon in clubs to be so dependant, so again, not taking anything away from anyone, just that people seem to believe that Wrexham and Notts operate under different monetary values.
Championship yes, Premier League? One is allowed to dream but it´s for now just a dream.
They were in the second tier in the late 1970s so that wouldn't really be much of a historical success tbh.
@@davedavids57 What a fairy tale right, only 50 years to advance from 2nd to 1st tier, hehe, sounds kinda lame when looked at it this way haha.

This is the worst click bait I've ever seen. Talk to me when they're in the championship (teams spend an average of 150 million pounds to go from the championship to premier league)
I guess leaving a comment makes me a sucker, click bait = comment bait for engagement, I hate these titles so much
Maybe the championship. Premier League? I don’t see it.
Not sure if you’re aware but there are actually other clubs in League Two, just as there were in the Conference last year.
Nobody is saying Notts County and Stockport are any less impressive. Sounds like you’re upset your club isn’t as recognizable as Wrexham. Why not get involved and help their exposure if you’re so upset about it?
Just none are as big now tho
@@13has No club gets as much coverage from the BBC relative to its stature as Wrexham, partly because of the BBC regions. When they were promoted last year, there were 6 or 7 pieces of content on the BBC Sport homepage. Orient were promoted to L1 the same day, and they had the usual one story. If you're familiar with the BBC you'll know that, in its delusion, it thinks that it can compete with Netflix, and in its desperation for clicks the BBC (often BBC Wales) is giving far too much sensationalist coverage to Wrexham.
@@alexzzzzzzzzzz247 The BBC is way bigger than Netflix in the UK.
@@ian_r125 The comment was about BBC Sport's over-coverage of Wrexham. When you compare original programming like-for-like, Netflix has global appeal and the BBC only has local appeal. The BBC could never have made a documentary like the Disney+ one and had the same impact, hence why they're desperately trying to piggyback on the Wrexham story with clickbait aimed at a North American audience. I don't think that's what the BBC should be.
I can smell the jealousy before I've even read the comments.
Let’s go
yet they are sitting third as of today and settled in the league - five points from 1st. early days
Sure, but they're tied on points with Notts County who they just beat 0-2 away, the only reason they're in 3rd and not 2nd is a difference of a single goal on GD. 3rd place is just as good as first place at the end of the season in League 2. There's still 30 more regular season games to play, so there's a lot left to play for.
Honestly I'm impressed. They're close to promotion on their first season outside of the bottom. I really tought this season was gonna be far more difficult for them, struggling to barely keep the middle table. Being that close to a direct promotion it's actually pretty impressive.
Ben Foster is a clout chaser, gotta admire his dedication to chasing "content"

Don't be relegated in the first year after promotion.
Ridiculous. Get out of league two first.
Stockport county 5 0
Bum boys of the BBC
Why are Wrexham so hyped tho
Why not 😅
There Hollywood owners
Good team, good town, good owners, good story.
Ryan Reynolds is a marketing genius. He started out guerilla marketing his Dead Pool movie and then branched out by taking significant positions in liquor, mobile phones, and financial tech companies along with percentage deals on his ability to boost sales. For Wrexham AFC this included the Welcome to Wrexham tv series as well as other promotional efforts which has made Wrexham into one of the world's most popular football teams in less than three years. Amazing. He's so good at this that, when he and some associates (including Rob McElhenney), bought a quarter share of the Alpine F1 team for a little over $200 million US this year Team Alpine told the Wall Street Journal that it hopes Ryan can help with marketing and expansion efforts.
I'm sure we'll win the title given we're 5pts off Notts County and we keep our best players fit like Sarce, Wootts, Bailey and Tanto Olaofe not trying to jinx but it's looking like we'll get there before Wrexham and their Hollywood money and Yanks jumping on the bandwagon who probably never heard of Wexham before Ryan and Rob bought the club
There's an undeniable arrogance and complacency that's appeared since the boys' takeover. I'm happy for the long-suffering Wrexham fans (as distinct from the plastic Disney ones), but saying it's a three-horse race when teams like Morecambe and Mansfield have been keeping pace (and could go above them if they win their games in hand) is just disrespectful. And the guy saying they'll be in the Champions League in a few years, half-jokingly! Some Wrexham fans seem to think they're a bigger club than half the Prem.
@@rogerbeattie2263 That's not correct. They're physically located in Wales but play in the English league system. If they were promoted to the Premier League and finished inside the top 4, they'd qualify for Champions League football.
@rogerbeattie2263 Still not correct. For Uefa qualification, it doesn't matter if you're a "Welsh" or "English" club, what matters is the league system you play in. The Welsh Cup has been won for the past two years by TNS, a team based in England that plays in the Welsh system. And yes, they qualified for Europe. Likewise, in 2013, Swansea, a team based in Wales that plays in the English system, qualified for the Europa League. If Wrexham got to the Premier League, they would be able to take one of England's qualification places, because they play in the English system.
