  • This is a rotary changeover switch. It allows for a single input to have two outputs or two inputs to have a single output. It can even have two inputs and two outputs. I show the simple way to test the terminals operated by the switch and how to wire for a double input single output.

This was exactly what I was looking for! When I bought this switch I was under the assumption that this is how it would operate, before learning more and that what I want is a DPDT on off on selector switch. Thank you so much!

Great simple tutorial. It's quite a good rating for this price of switch.
It's worth noting that often these switches are rated at much lower DC voltage or current than AC. That's because a DC arc doesn't self-extinguish because there's no zero-crossing 100 or 120 times a second. That can cause the contacts to weld themselves together or just burn and leave a carbon later on them. Probably not a huge problem for your setup with a small DC voltage from a few panels.

I have replaced my broken 3 way fridge (12v/240v/ gas.) in my campervan with a small 240v compressor fridge (50w) This works fine on campsite hook-up 240v. When driving I want to use an inverter powered by the 12v cable (was for 3 way fridge)which is powered when the engine runs. Can I use the rotary changeover switch to do this ? and how should I wire it? Will this switch allow the fridge to work on hook-up 240v without 240v going to the inverter? (or does this not matter!) Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi. My application is exactly the same as yours; solar panel switching from position 1 to solar controller and position 2 to ecoflow power pack. I'm still a little confused with the wiring. So 2&1 will be position 1 and power pack, 4&3 will be position 2 and solar controller. Am I right so far? Does the feed in from the solar panel have to be across the remaining 4 terminals? 5,6,7 & 8? I have exactly the same switch too. TIA

I am going to be using this switch to "select" between a dryer outlet and tesla EVSE (ev charger). This allows me to use the 10amp romex that runs to my dryer for dual purpose and it won't overload my breaker. I'll report back when I finish the project.

Great video, this is exactly what I needed. I’m doing something very similar. In your upper switch, did you buy the 12 terminal variety instead of the eight pin? Because you have AC current coming in and out, so three wires…? And then you do the same thing as you did in the video with DC, just short the output sides, and then wire one input to each of the options?

I have 4 12v lights I want to switch from (off - all 4 - just 2). They're currently wired to all switch on together with a relay that switches with the car ignition. I don't want them always on when Im driving so I want to switch them. I can easily make an on-off switch for all 4 with the power leads and an on off from two lights to all four lights, but ideally I want it in one neat switch rather than 2. Would a rotary switch work for that?

Thank you! I was getting frustrated because the blue seas rotary switch instructions dont mention using a jumper wire on both outputs if you only want to use a single output with two inputs. The diagram shows a solid line between them, and i was assuming thats what the solid lines meant, but not being a pro, i didnt want to chance it and connect them and possible destroy my new inverter.

I am not sure I fully understand this. I also have 2 sources and one output. Mine is either from a breaker which is powered by a generator or from land line. So if I place the white and black in the input side, on top for one source and on the bottom for the other. What do I do with the grounds from each source.
The second part I don't understand I need a power neutral and ground from the output as it goes to a mini split ac heater. So if I need 3 wires how does the other end connect to the changeover switch? Where does the ground go?

You want grounds to always be connected. They don't switch with the on/off. Same way with nuetral. Only hot wires are switched. That way if any stray voltage happens you are still protected by the ground. Please someone chime in if I have it wrong.
