Sony VPL-AW15 Bravia LCD Projector Fan Repair

  • I was gifted a broken Sony VPL-AW15 with a fan error. The error ended up being the main blower fan on the bottom. While easy to diagnose, accessing proved more in depth than I first expected. I also go over testing the fans anyway for good reason as you will see.
    I lost the last few minutes of footage. I kept thinking about re-shooting it but it was just the projector showing some fireplace footage and me talking. The actual teardown and repair are fully covered.
    The picture was surprisingly good for the age of the projector. None of the yellowing I expected. This unit was either incredibly well taken care of or has low hours.
    One thing I noticed is the amount of features that look a lot like a Sanyo of similar vintage. No real reason, but I found it interesting.
    Here is the lamp if you need one. www.purelandsu...

    Ive read, the bulb is rated for 2,000 hours, but I know for a fact I have to have at least twice that through the years sonce 2007/8; no lie. This has been an excellent projector and provided MANY hours of entertainmemt for my family and i and many kids and teenager parties with movies and games and karaoke. Great find for you.

      As much as Sony can be a pain, I will never say they have poor engineering. I always enjoyed working on Sony gear. They just make things really well.

    Hey Frank, you may find this hard to believe, but i have this very same projector, ceiling mounted it in the movie room I guilt back in 2007/8, and Ive never cleaned the filter or replaced the bulb, and its still operating with no problems at all; actually watching a movie with it r n; although it has had the "replace lamp/filter" msg on the screen for a long time now, just haven't "made" the time to address it; it was gonna just be a temporary projector but that was many 100s of thousands of hours ago. Thinking ill Prob pull it down this next week and clean it up. I've just been waiting for the bulb to go out before putting out the money for a new one. Think this one was made mid week lol. Anyway, great video. Thank you.

    Another great video. From every video you learn something and little by little you gain confidence and rip the guts of any electronic gadget and be able to put it all back together. It's all about perseverance. I watched the benq ht2050 DMD video too. Keep up the good work. 45:29 When putting these flex cables back in place extreme care must be taken they can easily get damaged and if you damage one cable you will have to buy the entire lcd block.

    I have an AW10 with the exact same issue, except that the fan that fails to start is the one that pulls air from the lamp housing, the one in the triangular case besides the power supply. Tries to spin twice then shuts off. Easy to spin by hand though.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Před 11 měsíci

      sometimes the status reporting circuit fails. It will feel fine and possibly even run on a power supply but the third wire that reports the status will have bad signals. If you check the fan label, you can find the same model pretty easily. Make sure its the same though or the other specs might cause fan errors for no obvious reason.

      @@FixitFrank i tried powering it from a power supply and does the same thing. Definitely fan is dead. i will see if i have any 3 wire fans of the same size.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Před 11 měsíci

      the size is only part of it. you need to make sure the status wire is the same mode. Some are high on stall, low on stall, one pulse for rev, two pulses per rev , open collector etc. Ideally you want to make sure its the same exact fan.

    Hi Frank! Any idea how to fix a 3 cover/lamp power led blink problem of this same model? The lamp should be still good (has been replaced only a couple of months ago).

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Před 3 lety +1

      Kind.of hard to say exactly. Did you get any messages about the lamp life ending before this happened? It could be a defective lamp, or the lamp timer expired. The other thing to check is if the blower fan in the bottom got stuck. The three flashes seems to mean lamp life expired, or lamp got too hot. I do agree that the chances of the lamp being bad this soon are low but I wouldn't rule it out until you check the fan.

    • @evelienepiene967
      @evelienepiene967 Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks Frank! No, I didn’t get any messages saying that the lamp should be replaced. It was replaced about a year ago, so it should be fine still?? I checked the contacts of the fan cover and lamp cover as well...

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Před 3 lety

      I would think so. Usually you get a message saying its running out of time or something like that. I'd start at the fan if I had it here.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Před 3 lety

      It will be hard to find. however, you can clean the old one with a vacuum. You can also replace the element with some open cell foam, like is used in a window air-conditioner. This unit is a little too old to find reliable Sony parts.

      This one found me. There was a fellow who bought a lamp and then found out the fan was jammed. He wanted an excuse to upgrade so I paid to ship it into me with his lamp. People kind of know that I like old gear so it always ends up with me somehow. I then see about getting that used gear to people who need it. There is a large immigrant population around here that does not have easy access to technology so I try and get it to them if I can.
      I wish it was easier to ship things to you! I would happily send it your way.

    Any suggestions about how to find good quality lamps for this model?
    My original lasted well over 2000 hours. Second was the same direct from Sony. Third lasted less than 500 and the new bulb I have now was bought at the same time as the last one.
    Also, I can't find ANY air filters and I can't clean the two I have any longer....
    It detects they are too dirty to use. Any thoughts about recovering them?
    It will work with an empty frame but that's not going to work very long.....its still really clean inside.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  Před 3 lety

      I still have this on my shelf. I'd like to sell it at some point. I really need to get on that. I have a pile of decent projectors that need homes.
      I think your issue is 2 fold. Lamps tend to fail earlier and earlier due to dust build up on the fans inside as well as the fans wearing out over time. Most service manual recommend fan replacements after 5000 hours. I don't know anyone who actually does that. I suspect your lamp blower fan is wearing out or has a lot of dust on the blades.
      www.purelandsupply.com/sony-projector-lamp_vpl-aw15.html This is a good quality lamp. However it will only hold up as well as it can be kept cool. The filter material itself can be replaced. I use that thin air-conditioner filter for window units. It's not the same as the folded element Sony uses but the foam will work just fine.
      The problem with finding OEM parts is the age of the unit. 7 years is the average that companies will carry parts for.
      I honestly wonder if yours is starting to suffer what this one did? The way the projector determines if the filters are clogged is by the air temp. If the fan is not spinning properly, it will act like a clogged filter. You might want to give that fan a little push(the one under the filter). See if it feels sluggish or sticks in places.

      I love it! They are wonderful in that regard. Definitely over engineered. I have a 4K sony projector video in the works. It was half full of water for a while. I have it partly working and will continue to see if I can fully repair it. Also very over engineered. That seems to be the case with Sony in general. They make very good items for the most part.
